Thanks for the great feedback on our last Acoustic Guitar Pickup video. As requested, here is Mass Street Music's repair shop manager Mike H. showing off our 'Pickup Testdrive' acoustic guitar for the 2nd time-this time playing the exact same tunes for each pickup. This store stock Eastman E6 OM is loaded with three of our most popular acoustic pickups: the K&K Pure Mini, the Fishman Infinity, and the L.R. Baggs M80. Which one is best? It depends on what sound you're after and what your playing situation is. For more information check out our blog article here: massresonator.com/2012/11/pick... Questions about pickups and installation Just give us a call at 800-747-9980 or check us out at massstreetmusic.com/
Check out the K&K Pure Mini here:
massstreetmusic.com/products/k...
This three-transducer passive pickup system has a great warm sound, with minimal modification needed to your guitar. This pickup delivers a really true representation of your specific guitar and is great if you're playing solo or in a group that uses lower volumes.
Check out the Fishman Infinity here:
massstreetmusic.com/products/f...
Works great in a larger band-has more headroom and is able to cut through well and be heard in a large band setting.
Check out the L.R. Baggs M80 here:
massstreetmusic.com/products/l...
Not only can you switch it from active to passive, this M-80 has a built-in preamp and a secondary coil that picks up the top vibrations and mixes the signal with the magnetic pole pieces, giving you a broader tonal spectrum yet fully natural sound. Nice headroom, too, so it works well for higher volume situations as well.

All I have to say is this comparison test is the most accurate and helpful I have ever seen! The 3 p/u all in same guitar... brilliant! Just so you know great reviews like this are genuinely appreciated!!! Really helpful!

Most of any guitar comparisons I see or hear on the internet the difference due to poor recording and probably just internet filtration makes the comparisons less than audibly discernible in their differences. Y'all have done a great job overcoming this... well done!

Six years later and , though the Infinity is discontinued, this is still an excellent comparison of the three most common types of acoustic guitar pickups. Thanks for keeping the video up.

I think that the LR Baggs is the most natural sounding. I have heard people rave about the K&K on guitar forums but I don't find the most natural sounding.

Awesome, thank you for making this video! As someone who is thinking about installing some kind of amplification in my guitar for the first time, this has been extremely helpful. I have been looking at internal mic solutions like the Baggs Lyric or Anthem more than pickups and transducers, and this video seems to confirm that preference. While they all give decent sound, none of these three sound "natural" enough to what I'm used to as a bluegrass guitar player.

To a large degree I hear that annoying transducer quack in both the K & K and the Fishman, but not in the LR Baggs M80. Yes, the M80 won’t quack as isn’t a transducer pickup, but rather a unique upper / suspended lower coil hum-bucking pickup which also acts like an internal mic, together producing a sound remarkably like a 1960’s era Gibson L-5 CES.

A well-produced and informative vid! Thank you for it. Your right-hand technique is excellent, “wristy and fingery”, with good dynamic control. SO many guys put FAR too much horsepower (via biceps and triceps!) into the right hand and push piezos, in particular, into clipping territory producing the dreadful sounds with which we are familiar. The transducer is the primary link in the signal-chain, but everything else matters right through to the speakers and room. Lots of challenging experimentation before one gets the sound in the room close to that inside one’s head! [Tyneside, England.]

Great video is right. All three would be useful for some songs. An EQ adjustment would be the best bet, have to get manufacturers of cheaper amps to add it!

You should output all three pickups at the same time into an audio interface directly. This comparison would be better since the the sounds wouldn't be mixed with the actual guitar sound picked up from the microphone. This would benefit live loopers as it will only record the signal from the pickups.
@kevinj2525
@kevinj2525 9 жыл бұрын
electricsashimi that's what I was hoping for too. in recording as well as higher volume live settings where the sound coming right off the body of the guitar isn't as audible to everyone it's good to know that your pickup is going to do an adequate job of representing your guitar

Thank you! They all sound great. My gut is telling me the K&K had the purest acoustic sound. I know you said that was best if you didn't need to amplify it too loudly. Since I doubt I'll be playing Madison Square, that may be the one, haha! Great playing too man!

Very helpful, though I would like to request some clarification. Can you tell us if you hear a difference in the sound of the other two pickups with and without the M80 in place? In my experience, the M80 is heavy enough that it actually changes the acoustic sound of the guitar due to the mass it adds to the sound board. Thus, the K&K and the Fishman are likely being influenced by the fact that M80 is still hanging in the sound hole during the tests.

Hi! You did a great for comparing the three (3) pickups. Base on the sound I heard from the three (3) pickups, I do prefer the K&K Pure Mini. It brings the natural sound of the guitar in a whole. Would just kindly ask if the K&K Pure Mini causes some feedbacks? Thank you and God bless. :)

Now how about fishman with the gooseneck mic with the lr baggs anthem sl and the new lr baggs . I was wondering on this guitar do you really have all these 9volts battries inside or you split them to one? love n peace

K&K wins! Especially considering it's passive, AND, no preamp was used, and still sounded as good or better. Combined with a good preamp, it would excel.

the K&K Pure Mini is a passive pickup so plugging it into a pre amp would make it sound better and louder.

Interesting demo, but questionable. I prefer the fuller tone of the Baggs on this one, but have an infinity on my classical/jazz crossover guitar, and it sounds of course much richer than what you have here. Then again, you could adjust the treble and bass on the amp to compensate for and alter any tone coming from one's pickup to make the sound you're looking for. As long as the fidelity in the pickup is good, you have a good point of departure -- and indeed the "tinnier" pickups here might provide more high end to tone down, better as a starting point than not having much high end to begin with.

This comparison isn't fair. The K&K Pure Mini is a passive pickup so it's obvious that is has a weaker sound to it compared to the other 2 pickups. You should have had it plugged into a pre amp and then into the amp.

Please let me give my opinion: Comparisons should start with a good mic, because we choose an acoustic guitar for its unplugged sound, and what we want from a pickup is a natural, faithful tone. I have a Advanced Jumbo guitar with spruce top and rosewood back and sides, and I can't make a decision about what pickup to try first because no one compares the acoustic vs. the plugged tone, and my guitar is way different than yours. Maybe the pickup I like more from your video is better for your guitar, but it could be the worst on mine.

Clayton Ataide 4 years late , I’ll answer your question! The microphone is always the best choice Ever! If you want a similar sound plugged in you have to install more than one pickup! Mic (air /string / percussive/ and fullness) Transducer (attack) Magnetic (volume /power)
@markellis3648
@markellis3648 5 жыл бұрын
To compare the pickups with the same settings is not how it works. To expect them to sound the same is like expecting different makes of guitar made out of the same wood to sound the same. In fact I played quite a few J45s before I bought one. Each of the pickups will have its positives and negatives depending on the guitar, settings and strings. In this demo I though the LR baggs sounded less umph but I have heard stars use and record with it sousing great. Whichever mic you choose it will all depend on the settings you dial in to get the potential. If you want perfect sound go external mic route then it’s all down to skill.

RAHAN G sorry sir ! But I think that the lack of bass is from the pu! The Eastman is a pretty full sounding guitar ! I think that the equalization was “flat” The m80 is the most close to the sound of this guitar (specially in the strumming part) The lack is the K&k and piezo. I swear!

Direct sound would give us all a proper listen to the actual pickup. The room you are in is clearly to live sounding and makes all the pickups sound terrible and that amp is far too tuned to the mids. Sry.
