You can detect the voice of popular Victor contralto Elsie Baker in both versions.

I wonder if any of the same singers participated in both recordings. I guess we'll never know.

Great presentation. You can hear how the acoustic version has fewer dynamics, fewer range of audible notes, with a little reverb, but the electric version is almost overwhelming in the booming range of organ notes, and the clarity of the voices is greater. Does anyone know when Paramount truly went electric? I’m sure everyone’s heard the joke about how their “new electric process” simply meant they put an electric light bulb in the recording studio (!)

Columbia's budget Harmony Records recorded beautiful acoustic records through 1929. The acoustically recorded first recording of Rhapsody in Blue is so much better than the electronic version a couple years later. Both recorded by Paul Whiteman.

The electrically recorded version of Rhapsody in blue from 1927 was purpotedly under the direction of Nat Shilkret due to a dispute with Whiteman and Gershwin

After the introduction of electrical recording in 1925, Victor, for sometime, released records that had an acoustic recording backed with an electrical recording until all acoustically recorded masters were used.

This is an exellent demonstration. Howeic was made in an a large church with a large organ. Compare exer[s made there around 1923 there with the competge Stainer CRUXIFISION album M-64 made in 1929 the end reultnt simmilar.

That electrical recording was so LATE considering that ALL of the elements were "there" YEARS before: Telephone, Radio... "We" knew how sound could be electrically encoded and reproduced almost 50 years before 1925 when it was applied to RECORDING is rather mind-blowing!

Well...there wasn't diodes until circa 1920 . These electric elements are fundamental for amplification and recording of Sound. The primitives radios, telephones, microphones, etc doesn't had enough power or Fidelity to record until the Diodes arrives and the sound amplification was posible

Any kind of vacuum tube amplifier in the 1920s was still "hi-tech" and as such quite expensive. The telephone was a mass market item where the cost of amplifiers were justified, and critical even. It would be reasonable to assume that the economic and technological driving forces between switching from analog to digital recording and switching from acoustic to electric recording were similar. The new tech was expensive and complicated for the studios while the improvements for the consumer were marginal. Also consider that many homes who had a gramophone probably didn't even have electricity.

The vacuum tube amplifier dates to Lee DeForest in 1906, quite a bit before 1920@@SO_DIGITAL

DeForest's tubes were awful. Even he didn't understand fully how they worked. So, while you are technically correct, the technology didn't become practical until the 1920s. It is often the case with technology, even though transistors were invented in 1947, they didn't become useable in actual circuits for at least another 10 years and only became mainstream in electronics during the 1960s. Due to the limitations of transistor operation at high frequencies, television had to wait until the 1970s to fully enjoy transistors. @@jamesslick4790

So I'm not as nuts as I thought eh? To me, Canadian (electric) Victor 78s into the 40s used noisy shellac (or its compounds). Even shiny-/minty-looking records have crackle. ...or are you using a wider stylus for the acoustic side??

Firstly listening to this digitally does not do the sound difference justice, it’s noticeable sure but in person there’s way more to be noticed. Secondly, what’s the name of the song at the beginning?

I have a Limania Splendid from 1910 but it makes a lot of distortion with electrical 78 rpm records, is there a way to fix this?

What is the name of the first song? I can remember my grandfather saying Georgie Porgie kissed the girls and made them cry to tease us but I never knew it was from an actual song .

Curiously enough I prefer the acoustic version as the electrical version seems to have unpleasent distorsions.Listen to this piece as a member of a congregation in a church to hear it for yourself. The acoustic version does not present the whole audio picture but what is there is a reasonable faximilie of the original performance. It often took a while for engineers to understand & make the best of new audio formats. As was once said at Decca records [with the introduction of FFRR]the wider you open the window the more dirt you let in.

Agreed. Something warmer about it. Just because it's loud doesn't mean it's good.

I agree as well. The acoustic recording is much more natural to the ear. It in fact is more like being there.

The acoustic records were for their time as good as it got until electric took over. Like kind of an experiment. The tone is still interesting to listen to.
