This is a demonstration of the acoustic recording process. This was how artists would make records pre 1925. After that electric microphones were introduced and changed the recording industry forever.
On this video I demonstrate myself making an acoustic recording so you can hear what it does to the sound.
Back at the turn of the century it was the sheer volume of the instrument, or voice that would vibrate a diaphragm to cut into the wax disc/cylinder.

Congratulations Matthew! What an amazing demonstration. I have seen other such demos, but this one appears to me to be the most successful and the joy on your face as the cylinder plays back you efforts is palpable. Heartwarming; thank you.

Matthew i have been playing the banjolele for about a year and trying hard to learn the George Formby style. I am happy with my progress and dream of getting up on stage at one of the GFS meetings. A way to go yet. You are really good at playing so i must keep on practising

Wow. Friggin awesome. How many times do you think you can you play the recording back before the needle wears it out Matt,
@matthewrichards88

Andy Bibby hey Andy! For playback it uses a glass ball! Unlike the 78s that use those steel needles that dig into the records, the glass ball rides over the grooves :). Brown wax like this, was used for commercial recordings up to about 1902. Edison started to mold cylinder's onto a harder wax to increase durability. You could play this about 30-40 times no problem. With an earlier pre 1902 reproducer (they were lighter weight ) you could get even more playings. In 100 years we'll see what they say. (amazing how we are still playing these cylinder's 100 years or more since they were made)!

And the blanks. Homemade or expense test plates?
@matthewrichards88
@matthewrichards88 6 жыл бұрын
Andy Bibby homemade? I ain't that good! :) There are three main makers of modern blanks in existence that I know of in the world. The blank in this demo was a Paul Morris blank (he is located in Exeter) . We call it wax, but this brown wax is made of metallic soap. It is still a very soft medium

Is this an original edison recorder stylus? I know you had some excellent results making your own styli. I have a recorder body but unfortunately no stylus :( been after a recorder for years. Thanks for the brilliant video! Delia

Little Miss New Hudson hey yes this was an original Edison stylus. There is a guy in the US who has started to produce cupped stylus. I've not tried one but heard they are very good

Not to sound like a jerk, but I’ve seen everyone recording acoustical cylinders, but why isn’t anyone recording acoustical records like this?
