Stuffed cabbage is one of our family recipes - my grandmother passed it down to all of us. We add carrots to the filling to make it a little sweeter (instead of the raisins). I've totally made it w/ ground chicken or turkey, and my mother has done sausage a few times. We roast them in the oven in the big roasting pan, and served over mashed potatoes. Yum!

I serve with mashed potatoes on the side with my stuffed cabbage rolls too and I put sour kraut in the bottom of my pan with my sauce before baking cabbage rolls and on top of the cabbage rolls with my sauce. This is how my family has always made.them. I come from a family who's ancestors are Slovak, my Grandma and mother always made stuffed cabbage, cabbage fried with onions and garlic in butter with kluski noodles and perogies with fried onions and butter too. All such yummy comfort food!!

I love stuffed cabbage but really hate the boiling cabbage part. Since I only make it once a year of Christmas eve, I'm doing 3 or 4 heads. Also, the core is very good. My mom & me are the only ones we know of that chop up the core & tiny leaves and fry them in butter & onions. They have to steam for a few minutes before the frying to ensure that they are soft. We love them more than the stuffed cabbage.

Hi Becky, I make a lazy stuffed cabbage. I core out the middle of the cabbage leaving a cavity for the filling. I cover the opening with several whole leafs to keep the filling moist. It’s more like a stuffed cabbage head . I cover the cabbage with my sauce and bake until the filling is cooked and the cabbage is tender. I bake the cabbage in a Dutch oven so that all sides of the cabbage is evenly cooked. I slice the cabbage in wedges and cover with sauce. It doesn’t take as long to prepare and it is a pretty dish.

Use raw rice when making cabbage rolls , as they cook it absorbs the fats and liquid from the filling , I was also taught to cover the rolls with chicken stock after they have been placed in a baking dish . The tomato sauce is added after .

Hi Becky, trick for your cabbage, freeze your cabbage for 3 days, then take it out the next time you want to make the rolls, thaw in a bowl with about an inch of water in the microwave, the cabbage is way more tender, also when go to roll, trim the core part, and roll from the thin side in, leaving the thickest part on the outside.

a mixture of tomato juice and tomato soup makes a great sauce as well for cabbage rolls. We make them a few times a year. :)

My favorite pizza o Bo is fresh basil, cherry or grape tomatoes, onions, sliced garlic & fresh mozzarella. I like it both with sauce or just olive oil. Sometimes for a quick single I use flat bread or pita. And like you, I put the tomatoes on top to roast. Also try with sun dried tomatoes as they are so sweet.

I agree 100 percent about the fresh tomato on the pizza... YUMMY! 😁 Also, if you want to cut a bunch of cherry tomatoes quicker, put them on your cutting board, then put a small lid on top and hold it down while you slice through them horizontally. It works great.

Cabbage rolls are on top of the list when I do freezer meals. I also freeze pirogies, and make borscht and Cabbage Roll Soup for canning. The first thing I always do when starting new traditional dishes, is find out which of the traditional ‘comfort’ foods are good for canning/freezing. We’d be lost without Butter Chicken and Rice or Tandoori meat skewers in our freezer these days, my sons (25 & 28) wouldn’t know what to do for a midnight snack…lol

Do you freeze raw or pre-cooked? I'm just one person and don't make many meals like that bc I'm not really fond of a lot of leftovers.
@April_K75
@April_K75 2 жыл бұрын
@@carolynmills513 Hi Carolyn! My mother in law cooks them then freezes them. Since you don’t like a lot of leftovers ,what you can also do is portion them out before freezing! So you can either get small lunch size containers and put maybe two rolls in each with sauce, cover and freeze. They keep quite nicely in the freezer. When I’m ready to eat, I put them in a medium sized sauce pot, add a little water, flame on low to medium heat and they thaw out beautifully! They taste as if they were freshly cooked. I hope that helps 😊

When I make stuffed cabbage, I use my mid size pressure cooker. I load it up like you did in your dutch oven-when it starts rattling you let it go for 15 minutes then remove it from the heat, wait for it to release and it’s time to eat. I also put in carrots and small red potatoes in the bottom-the hillbilly way to stretch a meal. I use a big ice cream scoop with the release handle to make sure all meatballs are the same size. I use V8 juice for the sauce, I don’t like them sweet.

Don’t you worry about breaking things! That’s part of your charm. 🥰 Also, I had the BEST stroganoff in Hungary once. Very similar to what you made except they didn’t serve it over noodles and it had sweet gherkin pickles. Lots of them! It was really quite delicious.

Becky, you can freeze without sauce on tray and then bag them for space or make the entire meal in a 13 x 9 or smaller and freeze. I usually freeze without sauce then build will cool sauce before storing. Bump heat to 425 and try for 45 min to 60. Thanks for sharing
