Last time I was having a sort out and donate day my friend down the street popped over for a cuppa …she asked if we were moving so I told her I was sorting stuff to donate …she asked if she could take nearly all of it to give to her sister who had recently left an abusive relationship with just the clothes on her back . I was absolutely thrilled that someone I knew could really benefit from my extra stuff 🙂

Sorry to hear that but also really good you were alble to help someone out this way. I don't have to much anymore, minimalised loads in my kitchen but when i hear someone having to start from scratch due to similar reasons or housefire I always go through my kitchen and find something to give to them. Some things I might have to repurchase later on but I think it is better to give it at the time to someone who literally has nothing. Take some of the imense pressure of their back.

Have you heard I’d Buy Nothing project? It’s a national project where there are local Facebook pages for you to post things you’re getting rid of. And people come pick it up for free! When I go through massive purges of stuff I love using it instead of donating to goodwill! It’s going directly in the hands of someone who wants/needs it and then after two days or so, I take any of the extras people didn’t want and drop them off at goodwill.

Whenever I declutter, I go by a 50% rule. I try to get rid of half of the excess items, but not more than half. And they go into a 3-month quarantine before donating. It reduces the regrets, and sometimes I do find things I had been looking for when I go into the quarantine cabinet.

Exactly. For this reason I'd keep some of the things she donated. It can be hard to replace things that are sentimental, expensive, or hard to find. There is an economic collapse coming soon and what if we don't have electricity for a time? That manual pasta maker would come in handy. These are the same thoughts My Husband and I have! If you think you will possibly use something keep it! It is going to get harder and more expensive to replace things. I don’t like clutter either. I pray to be wise in what I buying in the first place. My Husband and I have been Married for 26 years and have 4 children. So, we have a lot of stuff. Yet, even we might possibly be moving across country, I don’t see us getting rid of most of Our Kitchen things or Tools. As I a Believer in Jesus, I pray to make Wise Decisions, when buying things I don’t need or will use. Also when getting rid of stuff. The Lord has also helped me to see, out of Respect for Husband working hard. I need not to spend money unwisely…for a lot of just wants!

When getting rid of things, Becky, keep in mind you'll want duplicates of some things in the upstairs kitchen AND the basement/prep kitchen. Also, if you & Josh ever have a second/vacation home (common in the PNW for folks who like the beach or mountains) you will need to fit out a kitchen there. With the cost of even used items, these days, it might be wise to just box things up & store them away, since you have plenty of room for that at the new house.)

I was thinking this as well. Some of that would be great for the second kitchen. Also, some items that aren't sharp or glass would be perfect to place at a play kitchen for when the little one hits toddler yrs. They love to mimic Mama so it's helpful to give them safe play items to feel as if they're participating in the task while you're getting chores done. You could use those flip top bottles and make your own homemade vanilla and give them away as Christmas gifts, Becky! The recipe is six or eight whole vanilla beans and fill the rest of the bottle with vodka. You slice open one side of the bean, shove them in the bottle wait 6 weeks or longer and then enjoy the fruits of your labor 😋😋💗 I'm sure somebody will enjoy them 👍😋😋

I would highly recommend looking in Vietnam Veterans of America to donate your things to. You can schedule a day for them to come pick your things up, you just have to have everything in boxes (that one person can carry by themselves) and they pick it up for you! It is SO nice!

Is it just me or does it just make more sense to have all drawers or pull out shelves in lower kitchen shelves? I decided this a couple of years ago and when we redesigned our condo kitchen that is what we did. I am so happy with the drawers! Nothing can hide!

When I redid my kitchen that's exactly what I did. All my lower cabinets are drawers. It's especially helpful now that I'm older and reaching down or getting on my knees is difficult. Plus...nothing gets lost in the back of a cabinet. Same with a deep pantry. Had all drawers built in the pantry. It works out great!!

I have read a lot of people in the comments say they regret donating things that they can't get now. I have been a "cook at home as much as possible" kind of mom, including baking breads and pasteries and cooking meals almost exclusively at home for about 20 years and have never regretted donating anything. Having less always makes me feel more at peace and function better in my kitchen.

I highly recommend replacing your toaster with a decently sized toaster *oven*. They are super useful for so many things, including baking/roasting small batches and re-heating things you want to keep crispy without wasting all the energy to heat a full sized oven. Hope the move went smoothly!

A lot of stuff that gets donated gets tossed, a better way to "purge" would be to buy less stuff and take time to consider what you want and what items are good quality. Otherwise you are essentially just having someone else toss your stuff, not to mention how much money could have been saved!

I wholeheartedly understand the reluctance to break up a set when donating items. What I usually tell myself is, "What i'm keeping is a full set of exactly the items I need and use. And what I'm giving away are exactly the single items that somebody, who doesn't want any set, is looking for." (And i know it's true, because I myself have been looking for single kitchen utensils and was frustrated about only finding sets 🤣 )

Making the decision to purge/declutter is a really big step. Some of the comments I'm reading could undermine that resolve! There are quite a few people saying they regret letting go of something but seriously, the world is so full of stuff that there is ALWAYS an alternative. I'd personally try to work out what is behind the regret itself, rather than lamenting not having a particular object.

for the utensils you don't want to get rid of so you don't break up the set, you can easily hang small nails in the pantry and keep them on the wall out of the way, but still available. Same with storage for your cookie cutters which are a super jumbly mess.

This video may be a year old but it is still so timely and helpful. Ive already cleared 2 large junk drawers from my kitchen lol. I have to admit that during your clearing process I could feel the stress building over the mini bundt pan. It was so beautiful and looked very decorative for Christmas cakes, either for the family or as gifts. Not to mention it was from one of your friends. Ive lost a few of my friends due to illness and it just seemed to stress me some. What a way to remember her. But I'm sure each of us deals with these things in our own way. As someone who has collected kitchen equipment since my teenage years, I have a lot of stuff that I just don't use. I'm 41 right now. I have a love/hate relationship with purging. I feel better when I do it, but most of the kitchen things (especially) have belonged to my Mom or Mother in law. I've lost both of my parents and my husband his mom, so most things are filled with memories, at least on my end. I can remember using the kitchen items with my Mom, as I learned how to cook, and I really want to share those memories with my daughter. I have let go of most of my mom's stuff, but I hate making the decision for my husband. He says he doesn't care, but I still believe he does. Good luck with the move.

But, I had surgery two days ago so I'm going to have to take a page out of your book and give myself some grace. I will absolutely go through my lower kitchen cupboards next week and listen to the messages. I know I recently got new cook and bake ware and I need to donate the older ones! There simply isn't room for both sets and my dining room looks a bit silly with pots and pans strewn about on the baker's rack. Thank you, friend for excellent advice and motivation.
