I have visited the Acropolis many times, since I am an Athenian. In the 70's, the restoration works had not started yet and you could even visit the interior of the Parthenon. I consider myself lucky to have been able to stand inside the Parthenon. I was visiting the Acropolis with my school and I had a history teacher, who had a lot of knowledge about the architecture of the Parthenon and showed us up close, the way the columns have been created, so that they give the feeling of straightness. Each column is unique and that is why the reconstruction works take many years, because it is a very difficult puzzle, with pieces that take time and effort to put in place. You can see the whitest spots on the columns, which were created some years ago, from selected Pentelic marble and fit perfectly with each column.

I didn't explore too much of Athens besides what was around the Acropolis. What do you like most about Athens?
@modo203
@modo203 2 жыл бұрын
@@ProWalks I had the chance to explore it for two weeks; even managed to make a short escapade to Nafplio. It’s a 2 hour drive in the bus. It is believed to be the most beautiful Greek city. It was magic. Judging from the video, you’ve most certainly explored Plaka and Apostolou Pavlou below the eastern slopes of the Acropolis Hill which is the heart of old Athens. Albeit touristy, it’s still a delightful place to walk around and wander through the narrow lanes, the stairs and admire the pastel-colored houses. Adrianou Street which separates Plaka from Monastiraki, has the best shops. I stayed in a fancy hostel in Psyrri and the prices were good. Situated at a walking distance from the flea market in Monastiraki, Psyrri is where you’ll find young Athenians, artists and musicians, graffiti, trendy cafes and bars; it has a hipsterish vibe but it’s pretty well gentrified with a very lively nightlife, hookah bars and live music venues. Kolonaki is where Athenian bourgeousie and the ‘nouveau riche’ live, shop and dine. Its proximity to the Parliament building makes a prime real estate area for politicians and business men. Prime restaurants and chic cafes and bars line the streets and so many museums to visit. Ermou is a long 1.5km pedestrian shopping street, it’s where the locals do their basic shopping. Athens is big. One visit will not do her justice. Hey, your videos are amazing and the caption idea is original! Thank you for the hard work. I watch them not only to explore new places, but also to reconnect with all the places I’ve been to and reminisce on the beautiful memories. Best,

Walking in Acropolis, is the one spot all the big names you know from Greece walked right there. Alexander the Great, the Philosophers and Scientists, Leonidas, Themistocles and countless others. Same for Delphi, where Pythia said: "The wooden wall alone, will stand" before the second Persian invasion and thus the Greeks ( Themistocles ) deciphered it as "Ships" and Greeks have been saved. Indescribable goosebumps. Meanwhile, you never realize how big the Parthenon actually is unless you come face to face.

There is something sublimely tranquil about the remoteness of the Acropolis not unlike a seaside location where one looks out into the vastness of an eternal landscape as though it were an ocean to be sailed and voyaged. Obviously built during a time of global peace where one did not feel the threat of being attacked while located on a promontory but instead now felt safe to explore from.

I just want to say this was absolutely BRILLIANT!! My partner and I went to Athens last year and it has always been a dream of mine to visit the Acropolis (for 40yrs) but my arthritis prevented me from being able to climb up to it and walk around, which was a huge disappointment. My partner did a great job of taking photos up there for me, but this video, your video, helped me to understand the layout and it really felt as though I was walking beside you. Thank you so much. Mate, your video was really good and was much appreciated. But you have to understand that these are the *Parthenon Marbles* (not the Elgin marbles) and the fact that lord Elgin stole them (he didnt took them _"back to Britain")_ he then *sold* them to the British Museum *which* ever since refuses to return them, it's a major international cultural issue, with *UNESCO* itself leading the way for the repatriation of these (I repeat stolen) artifacts. It is also a matter of national pride for the Greeks, who are not really fond of these artifacts being called after the one who *ripped them off* using sledgehammers and steel levers detached them from the building and threw them down from 10 meters height in order to pack them, as well as of the fact that the Brittish Museum, offends the history of these marbles by refusing to even discuss this matter and by thus keeping them. An additional information you're probably not aware of: during the Greek War for Independence, the Greeks sieged Athens. The ottomans got fortified in the Acropolis, which they used as gunpowder depot. The Greeks shot no bullet against the Ottomans considering the damage the gunpowder could do to the building. Finally, these guys in the British Museum, some decades ago and *unlike all maintenance methods used internationally* during this period, they actually *brushed* the marbles using *bronze* brushes in order to ...clean them, they keep them all these years in a room with the water dripping from the roof for decades, besides using this same room for private receptions; they make private parties there, I suppose without a dj playing Detroit Techno, but *still,* parties. So please, be kind enough to correct the subtitles in order to propose the truth: these are the Parthenon Marbles.

At 39:30 in the close captions you write that Elgin "took SOME marbles BACK to Britain" First he didn't took some. He STOLE a LOT. Actually a whole wing of the British Stolen World's Heritage euphemistic called museum presents the sculptures Elgin stole for his private collection, after he granded a permit from the Turks who didn't care less about those stone ruins. He paid them to give him their permission. After some time and because the amount of the marbles was huge even for a gangster like him to maintain privately, he arranged the transfer to British Museum of Stolen Items. And he got back the money he gave to the Turks. Secondly he didn't took the marbles BACK to Britain as they were there at the first place. He took them TO Britain, not back to Britain. Only because of this I have to Thumb Down your otherwise excellent video.

Hey, I updated the captions. What I meant to say was that he took the marble back with him to Britain..not back to Britain. Anyway, I understand that it was poorly written and could be offensive. Glad you enjoyed the video otherwise.

@@ProWalks yes the video was marvelous honestly. And now you have updated the captions by adding two words, correctly describing his misserable act of stealing every sculpture representing figures of humans or animals, leaving marbles with geometrical shapes, you are my best friend. Will you sing the petition for their return ? We have a wonderful Acropolis Museum in Athens with emply seats for all stolen items, waiting ......
