In this painting tutorial I'll show you how to paint a semi abstract landscape using only 3 different colors plus black & white. I'll be using acrylics and water soluble crayons and painting on thick paper (160lb/200gram) but you can use canvas as well.
The colors I use are:Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Paynes Gray, Black, Titanium White.
Some folks might feel a winter landscape is boring or not pretty at all but I want to show everyone just how beautiful muted colors can be.

Hi, Marie Louise, many thanks for sharing these very inspiring paintings. I've been painting for many years and still learning. I have to tell you that a little door has opened in my brain, it's called texture!. For the years left to me, I'm going to carry on painting in a much freer and expressive way.

Thank you Marie Louise for creating such emotive paintings. As a retired graphic designer I paint a lot when I'm not playing or coaching tennis. I tend to work from photos, mainly of the South Downs in Sussex, UK and after many years have realised that to capture a landscape does not mean copying it and often the best effects can happen by accident. With your work to inspire me plus your 'zen like' tutorials, I'm primed to further simplify and 'loosen up' my own paintings.

I'm using oils on at the moment just on 12"x16" pages from a few canvas pads, after seeing the effect of the masking tape reveal on your videos, I have started to do that. I have lots of Hog Hair artists brushes, but I prefer to use the cheap varnish brushes you can buy in packs of three, 1", 2" & 3" these are still bristle but much thinner than decorating brushes, also a few old bank cards along with pallet knives and some ripped up old T shirts for blurring. The major thing that I'm learning from watching your excellent videos, is to try and keep the freedom and spontaneity of mark making all the way to the end of the painting, as I have a great tendency to work really freely during the first few layers but then notice I overwork the details and tighten up; a habit that must change...
@TheDanishPainter
@TheDanishPainter 3 жыл бұрын
Yes those cheap brushes are great aren't they?!! I often think of my painting process as a conversation - sometimes I speak and sometimes the painting does. I have to listen also because if I do ALL the talking it's not really a conversation - then it's just me giving a speech and trying to force something. Finding this balance is key but it's not easy. I feel I'm getting better at it though. Do you use oil pastels for details and such in your work?
@philipanderson2627
@philipanderson2627 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanishPainter I do use oil pastels and when I move to the (just arrived today), very larger sheets of oil paper I will unleash my Winsor & Newton oil sticks, and dig back into using some cold wax. But at the moment I still have a few of the canvas pages to experiment with, here are a couple of my favourite artists, the first I was Lucky to be able to view for real was a huge seascape by Joan Eardley years ago; and very recently discovered the work of David Tress which I really like. youtube is so very handy, as long as you don't spend all your painting time just watching everyone else... Te-He! all the best to you Marie Louise

@@philipanderson2627 Oh yes I know and like both Jean Eardley and David Tress. I often want to include some mixed media or collage in my paintings but it's a fine balance and something I'm still working on. Thanks for sharing your process and for watching!

Another beautiful painting! I have to ask you again more about your crayons...sorry...if thats not ok I understand and just ignore me! :) so, here you say water soluble, on another you say waxy, are there different ones you use? Or are they waxy feeling (because it clearly isn't, or doesn't look like, a pastel stick) and if they are a bit waxy, do they work as a resist a bit? Or if just water soluble, if you draw in wet paint, or paint over them, do your details disappear? I'm just trying to learn, I apologize. Its funny because one of the many things I am SO drawn to in your art are those little hard but messy or random lines that end up in the sky and clouds a lot...I just love them. So since you do a lot of that with the crayons I'm trying to learn more about them so that I can even know what I'm looking for on Amazon, but even more how to best use them. I'd hate to save and save to finally one day buy some only to waste them by just having them melt away into my paint:) also, if I added these marks last, would I still be able to varnish the painting or would that make the crayon lines melt away? You'd probably have to do some sort of varnish yes? Or then they could easily be wiped off? I'm not sure. This is one I found on Amazon, but again, not even sure if I'm actually understanding what they are :) Sargent Art 22-1124 Artist Quality 24 Premium Watercolor Crayons www.amazon.com/dp/B079QQ1VWL/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_K1BZMWJQZDRKEA2S1XAR Or are they oil pastels? any help is much appreciated! But again, I understand if not!! Sorry to be such a bother, I promise I won't bother you about them again!! Thank you!!!
@TheDanishPainter
@TheDanishPainter 3 жыл бұрын
Those crayons look a lot like the ones I use. I don't know that particullar brand but they seem to be what I have. As long as it says water soluble or watercolor pencils they will be fine. They do have a slightly waxy consistency but not at all like oil pastels and they do not resist the paint. I don't use oil pastels or regular "dry" pastels but a lot of other artists use them with great success. Yes the squiggly lines in the sky have come into my work over the past year and a half and I do like that they seem to add a feeling of aireness that I can't achieve in any other way :)
@jadetobin
@jadetobin 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDanishPainter awesome thank you :) yes, i don't know what its is, but those squiggly lines just somehow add this character that I love!! Like it sort of defines some clouds or something, but, like you said, in a very airy way...not like a line of paint. And in my head anyway, it seems like the ability to sort of rub the crayon on that way is what can make them both random and airy...with a paint brush it seems difficult to do that as you can't press down and really work your hand in there wobbling all over or you just get loads of slathered paint covering everything, or you'd have to use a small brush, that holds hardly any paint and every so lightly brush .... and still a hard line. Yup, you do it perfectly!! Its almost like you can feel them more then see them, but its enough to make you curious so you have to look longer and closer to understand them...I dunno, I'm sure I don't make sense, I only know the feelings I seem to get from parts of so many artists that I fall in love with and am mesmerized by :) I don't understand how or why, it just is :) so, thank you for sharing and introducing me to even more to love about art....art makes a huge impact on my life and makes me so happy(except my own, my own has me frustrated a lot, but still love doing all of it) and helps with my chronic pain from rheumatoid arthritis and getting joints replaced and losing the ability to be up and around much....so on days when I can't be up, I am very thankful for all the wonderful artists on here so I can still watch beautiful art being made...always keeps my brain moving and excited :) thanks again!!!!
