From an acrylic painter who's worked with oils: because oils paints are oil based, you can always add more oil to be able to rework the piece and the high oil content of the paint means they dry so slowly that they can pretty much be worked forever, whereas acrylic paints are water based plastic, so once the water has evaporated out, like most plastic it is no longer water soluble, you just have to paint over it. This is also why acrylic paints dry so quickly, because water evaporates fairly quickly, especially compared to oil. The number one tip i have for oil painters playing with acrylic paint is to use way more paint, and to use synthetic brushes, this will help with both the drying issue and the opacity, as acrylic paint is intended to be used more heavily than oils. the natural fibers of the brushes many people use for oil painting are too rough, and you'll end up with more brush strokes as the paint sticks to the fibers.

I really want to get into portraits using acrylics. Do you have any tips like to do and not to do? I know she mentioned a lot here but anything else that you think is really important? Thanks ❤️
@memorynsunshine
@memorynsunshine 5 жыл бұрын
@@vomiie i'm not really a portrait painter, more abstract, so i don't have specific tips for that. For acrylics in general, i'm gonna say it again, use more paint. if you're new to acrylics a good idea is to work in smaller sections, using a smaller brush. Acrylics do dry pretty quickly, especially if you're used to oils (acrylic painters get to the point where we have a blow dryer or fan just for painting to dry it faster lol) working in smaller sections will help you get used to the drying speed. blending is a big thing people seem to struggle with when transitioning to acrylics, and honestly a good idea is to copy from makeup videos. the blending technique they use of going back and forth between colors and using different shapes of strokes within the shape is very similar to how i blend paint. also move faster. which is why you want to start with smaller sections, so you have time to blend what you want how you want without something on the other side of your canvas drying out. if you like to sheer it out and have layers show through each other, rather than thinning the paint with water, there's a thing called mixing medium, which is basically a clear acrylic base with no pigment added, and you can thin out the color. i find that's generally a thing that oil painters like when starting to play with acrylics. The reason you don't really want to thin the paint with water is because it's a water soluble material so you're just breaking up the structure of the paint. if you thin oil paints with oil, you're just adding more of the base material, if you thin acrylic with water you're breaking the bonds of the materials and it can actually damage the integrity of the paint if you use too much water. a lot of people say you have to prime your canvas with a thin layer of acrylic before you paint, but honestly unless you're making your own, you don't need to prime, just use more paint. Store bought canvasses are primed with gesso, no matter if you're using acrylics or oils. i mentioned this previously, but i definitely recommend synthetic brushes if you can, nylon and tacklon are much smoother than any natural fibers, and the paint will slid off fibers easier and leave fewer brush strokes, which is important because you need to use more paint than with other kinds of paint. clean your brushes as soon as you're done with them tho, like never let your brushes dry because it will kill your brushes and then you'll have to go buy more. warm water is enough tho, honestly you don't need fancy brush cleaners or conditioners unless you're pushing hard enough to damage the bristles or you leave them bristle side down or something honestly though, one of the best things about acrylics is because they do dry fast and solid is that if you mess up or you're not happy with something, you can just paint over it! just wait for it to dry and then redo it! as many times as you need to! and it won't blend into the layers below! i have a painting somewhere that has probably 8+ layers of paint in certain areas, and it looks just fine!

Oh wow, i didn't know you could get acrylic paint that smooth. :O this is amazing
@synovelle
@synovelle 5 жыл бұрын
You need a canvas that is more on the smooth side, and typically prep the canvas with a layer or two of white paint. That helps keep your acrylic painting smooth. Also using a nicely dampened brush with acrylic paint will keep the texture to a minimal. But, usually, the more you blend, the more it will appear smooth- even if it’s actually extremely textured.

Hey, there! To people who are watching this: I am not sure if anyone has told you this but with acrylics, you can definitely use just use water but my pro-tip is to just start using acrylic paint mediums. There are mediums that help slow down the drying process of the acrylic paints, Liquitex has amazing mediums! There are glaze mediums, gloss mediums, iridescent mediums, slow drying mediums. Somehow, there are more mediums for acrylic paints compared to oils I realised and they are super fun to use for different effects. When I first started acrylics years ago I never knew until later on and acrylic mediums have helped me a lot. Also- sometimes even though the canvas is sold "primed" I would suggest just adding one more thin layer of gesso to help your paint sit better on the canvas. Not only that, you can also add a second primer on your canvas using a slow drying medium, just a thin layer so that you are able to work more from the start itself. I hope this helps people who want to get into acrylic painting more. As a student who couldn't afford oil paints and their mediums, I am happy that acrylics have tons of medium options that you can use.

I've found that it's MUCH easier to blend the super cheap craft acrylic paints than it is the acrylic paints made for traditional artwork. It's so strange to have to downgrade on materials but it's worth it

Your painting skills are amazing! I absolutely adore your art so much! ❤❤ Tip: to prevent the canvas from sucking up your paints, first lay down a base layer of watered down white paint! It will help a lot when you are laying down your paints. Thank you for this video I really enjoyed it ❤

I hav3 two different cups one with water the other a coffee, energy drink, soda,etc for me to drink. I was rather tired cause I was studying for a test and woke up on the weekend to just paint and relax. I used Mountain Dew instead of water someone help

In acrylics it really doesn't matter where you start because it's a covering material, it's different from watercolours where you need to build layers as a whole or it would look ugly.
