I am not new to acrylic painting but have struggled with blending skies. You are right about adding water in the tacky stage, I’ve made a hot mess of it more than once 🙄and there’s no fixing it, at least not that I’m aware of. I will also need to use a lot more paint. Thanks for generously sharing so many useful tips and techniques and clearly demonstrating your process. So helpful!

Rimu Malhotra It's your preference of blue for your sky blue....just mix both blues together try half in half, then add a bit of white to it slowly mixing the blues with it, you will see how much white you need to mix in it according to the lighting of the colour...to get the colour to grey down a bit,add a a tiny bit of burnt umber, just a smudge at a time. The more you mix your paints and experiment with it, the easier it will get for you. Search out other tutorials on you tube for mixing colours. I don't know if I'm allowed to answer your question, but I feel your frustration...been there.

I don't quite understand how you're struggling here. All I can say is that you can't force experience on yourself by reading comments. Just paint and figure out what works for you. Everyone's process is different. You will not be able to blend perfectly when you first start. You'll have to fail at it for several times in order to learn what will work best for you. Every painting is a learning experience, so if you're not painting and just asking then you're not really learning.

Hello! New to painting after 2 years! When I try this, my brush seems to pick back up the paint on the canvas especially around the edges when I swipe back and forth, leaving me with blotches and streaks all over the canvas. Any tips?? I used a cheap canvas (artist loft from Michael’s) and the same paints from 2 years ago (craft smart) I’m hoping to get back into painting and investing some money in good quality paints if that was my issue!
@cinderblockstudios
@cinderblockstudios 4 жыл бұрын
Ah ok so the use of the "craft smart" paint tells me everything. Craft paints as a whole aren't designed to be used on canvas for fine art purposes and are a poor excuse for acrylic paints. Their house brand "Artist's Loft Level 1" would be closer to what you'd want to be using for canvas work. Generally speaking though investing in some higher end paints will solve most of your problems. Cheap paints as a whole have HUGE issues with application on canvas for even the most basic and simple painting techniques. If you can swing the extra cash I'd recommend a starter color theory set from Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht, Blick, or Winsor & Newton

@cinderblockstudios
@cinderblockstudios 3 жыл бұрын
Never heard of Camlin (must be a regional product for you). The liquitex basics I'm just not a fan of at all, and their cerulean blue is a "hue" which means it's not true cerulean and is instead a mix of colors to replicate true cerulean. In most mixes of cerulean hue it's a phthalo blue and a titanium white. If you're getting the Camlin I'd highly suggest getting the heavy body ones rather than one of the sets.

How to paint the sky in criss cross manner . For shading? U r an artist so u painted quickly and merged beautifully. But since I am in learning process. If I need to make standstill river but not flowing, should I start with dark to light blue for shading or light to dark sky blue for.shading. 2 As I told u I am in learning process so how to merge colour because adding little by little water, can spread badly, if water colour is there it doesn't. @cinderblockstudios
@cinderblockstudios 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't start with blue for a river at all. I'd start with earth tones first. Even in a river standing still you don't get reflections like that. Once you lay down some base colors, build up your reflections one at at time. You can add a little acrylic glazing liquid if you would like to slow the drying time of your paint. Many artists do this, but I personally don't prefer it as it will make colors more transparent if you add to much. The best thing you can do as a beginner is just practice the method until you find the ratio that works for you. You can also step up your brush size if you would like, but you will be using a LOT more paint if you do that. Don't add white into blue, but mix the darker colors into the lighter ones. If you're doing a mixed blue like I did, mix it then slowly add that color into a pile of while. As little as you can at a time until you're happy with the mix.

@cinderblockstudios
@cinderblockstudios 5 жыл бұрын
Liquitex Basis are a brand of student grade acrylic. Not sure I understand your second question. Lastly paint that comes in a tube vs a jar is simply about volume. The same paint in the jar comes in a tube as well, it's not better there's just more of it and it's more cost effective for my to buy my white in a larger volume. If your paint is starting to thicken from not being used it's time to throw it away and buy new stuff. All acrylics paint tubes or otherwise will start to dry out or mold in about 20 years if they haven't been used.

Ok, I've really been trying to help you out here, but I'm starting to get annoyed. I'm only going to say this one more time. YOU DON'T NEED TO USE EVERY COLOR I DO! USE WHAT YOU HAVE! I have repeatedly answered your questions thoughtfully and thoroughly. What you need the most right now is something called "mileage." In short...make paintings and learn from your mistakes. Paint a lot! Paint often! I can't teach you experience, you just have to figure these little things out on your own. I can't hold your hand through every painting you do. You have to make decisions on your own and teach yourself at a certain point. Don't paint exactly like me, paint the way that YOU want to paint. My tutorials are supposed to be guides, not step by step instructions.

Sounds like a classic case of cheap paint to me. That level of separation happens naturally with oils and watercolors, but with acrylics it's likely due to a poor binder used by the manufacturer. Again an acrylic gel would help you extend the paint, but without it, you're better of just buying some better/new paint for more serious pieces.

@cinderblockstudios
@cinderblockstudios 7 жыл бұрын
I'm only going to reply to this one, and I'll do my best here. I appreciate your enthusiasm, however spamming the comments doesn't make me answer any faster. I can't give you an "exact ratio" because art doesn't really work like that. It's not an exact science. If it was it wouldn't be called art anymore. If you watched the video you can see the "ratio" for yourself. Mix with your eye and when it looks like mine then it's ready. Just using water is fine, if that's what you're limited to. If it dries too quickly then you are likely painting too thin so just mix up a lot more paint. Using too little paint is a common beginner mistake, so don't feel so frustrated in that regard. Criss cross strokes are simple one method among many to paint the sky. You can easily use a larger brush if you have it, just note it will require much more paint to cover the brush and subsequently the canvas.

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you let your paint dry out a bit. Cheaper paints will thicken a little over time, but if you have blobs of dried paint there isn't much you can do. You can try adding a little glazing liquid, polymer medium, or matte gel to smooth out the paint, but if that doesn't work you'll probably have to buy new tubes. Make sure that you're lids are always on tight and store the paint in moderate temperatures. However even if the caps are secure, extremes of dry, hot, and cold are likely to ruin your paint pretty fast.

@@cinderblockstudios one quick question, can you learn what colour has what bias by the name of it or does one have to teach themself how to see for e.g. how much blue or yellow is in a red 🤔🍒

It is absolutely something that you should to learn see through experience. The easiest way to do that I feel is just to mix with different paint colors. The reason being that it is a little bit subjective depending on what other colors that you are mixing with. Although there is enough information online that you could probably find a color wheel that maps every common paint to get a better idea of where certain colors lean.

There's a lot of little tips and pieces of advice that I can't account for in a script in a voice over. Not to mention the extra few hours it would take to edit the audio and sync it up at the right time.
