I like how you were like “see how easy that is?? Well I have been doing this for quite a while” 🤣🤣🤣 but I could relate because my family n friends think art is hard but it’s like how I just showed you. Art is visual so you have to have an observant eye to jump into those dimensions. The further you get into a piece the more you’ll see how to create things into being. Because you directly see what effect is made and how you can transcend on that method and take it further or deviate from it making more unique signatures throughout the piece

What a great comment!! And you're right.... the more you look the more you SEE, and the more you open up to seeing, the easier it is to get into the art piece. I agree entirely - thanks so much for sharing those thoughts!! 🙏😁😁⭐

I''ve been painting with acrylic for years, and have never seen the technique of underneath layer of white first! Can't wait to try it this afternoon. I live in aus and have major issues with the paint drying too fast when doing really large pieces with large brilliant blue skies. Often gave try rely on gel retardants to keep in moist (and have probably been relying on water too much :/

@@charlottegiblinart hi, any tips on creating a shine like an aircraft catching the sun? Hope I'm not being too cheeky
@charlottegiblinart
@charlottegiblinart 2 жыл бұрын
@@timmayhew4656 hello! Getting a shine to look really bright is all about the contrast between the shine and the colours around it. You can't go brighter than white (or white with a tiny bit of yellow in it can look "brighter" than pure white, just as white with a tiny bit of blue in it can look slighter colder and more metallic than pure white)... but the key is making sure the surrounding colour - of the airplane in this case - is considerably different in tone to make the shine really pop out. Look really carefully at the colours of the plane which are around the shine. The edges of your shine might be white with a tiny hint of blue, and then the centre of the shine will be pure white, which will make the pure white look absolutely super-bright!!

@charlottegiblinart
@charlottegiblinart 2 жыл бұрын
@@timmayhew4656 you're welcome! Also.... you need to keep in mind the texture of the object which has the shine, and make sure your paint strokes echo that. For example, an aircraft is smooth, so your shine needs to have smooth, crisp edges, which describe the surface of the object....

Very helpful thank you - think I need a bigger brush! My main issue is if I make an error or get a little flick of paint on my lovely gradient when painting the foreground over it - touching up perfectly is almost impossible!
@charlottegiblinart
@charlottegiblinart 11 ай бұрын
I'm so glad that the tutorial helped!! And you're right... covering over a perfect gradient is a nightmare - the only way to really correct a major mistake is to mask off (with tape) your foreground when it's dry and totally redo the sky gradient. Which is often unimaginable!!! If you just have a couple of flicks of paint you could try removing them (very carefully) with a scalpel blade when the paint is dry - sometimes the thickness of the fleck can be gently "prised off" with the tip of a blade without scratching the blended background. Or.... the flecks are birds!! Or, you embrace them as a beautiful part of the energetic painting process!!
@Emma-uh8vp
@Emma-uh8vp 11 ай бұрын
@@charlottegiblinart I won't say I got it perfect first time but loading the white on first as a base and 'cake mixing' colours on top is a game changer for a larger canvas.

Hello, first of all, thank you so much for the tutorial. I want to ask about the white paint you use at the beginning to moisturize the canvas, is that the same acrylic paint we use to paint? or is it a gesso? 😅 Thanks so much for the help!
@charlottegiblinart
@charlottegiblinart 3 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome!! Thanks so much for the positive feedback!! The white paint is normal acrylic. They key is finding one that isn't too thick, so you are able to get the smooth blend (and cheap paints are totally fine to use for the white especially, if you find one with the best consistency on the cheap shelf!). If you have trouble finding a smooth white, add a little water into your white before you start - maybe mix up a pot of white watered down a little.... the thing you don't want to do is add water in WHILE you're doing this blending process as the water can leave holes and create drips. 🙂

@@charlottegiblinart This means a lot to me, thank you very much! Also, I was struggling to find gesso in my region and wondering what can i use to replace it. I watched some videos on KZfaq and they said that gesso is important to close the pores of the canvas. Adding white acrylic instead surely will do, i suppose? I really appreciate your helpful information :)
@charlottegiblinart
@charlottegiblinart 3 жыл бұрын
@@adienarthamarchia exactly!! Using the white thickly like this as part of the layering process does indeed help the canvas. Plus.... I'm imagining that like most of us you are buying your canvases already with a wooden frame behind? (Not loose raw canvas). If you ARE buying canvas stretched over a frame (and looking white) it will already have been coated in gesso. I've never seen any pre-prepared canvases for sale which didn't already have gesso on them, so this way of using white to create a sky is just extra extra icing on the cake!!

@DarrellBoyd-pl4gh hello! In all those videos I use 3 primary colours made by Derivan (which is a student quality paint as the videos were originally done for my students to watch at home). The Derivan series calls the red "cool red" and it's a "warm yellow"... both are similar to cadmium medium colours, although the red is quite pink. Derivan paints are widely available if you want to buy exactly the same colours. Oh, and white of course.

I want to ask why does the brush dries so fast? Should I put a lot of water on it or what?
@charlottegiblinart
@charlottegiblinart 3 жыл бұрын
Try not to dip the brush in water while you are painting a soft blended sky because the water may dilute the paint too much, leave drip marks, or even create holes in the painted surface. Probably you need more paint on your brush if it is drying too quickly. Try adding a little water to your paint at the start, and mix the water in thoroughly - it's possible your acrylic paint is very thick which is why it's drying. Another thing you can try is to slow down your brush movements. The faster you move the brush, the more friction you create and the faster it will dry. I use a LOT of paint, which is why I get a smooth blend.... most students don't use enough and the paint drags. Try a few of the above suggestions.
