----------------------------------------
A Deep Dive into Emma Kok's Cover of "Father" by Demi Lovato
In the realm of music and performance, few songs challenge artists to delve deep into their emotional reservoirs like Demi Lovato's "Father." Emma Kok's cover of this profoundly personal song is a testament to her exceptional talent and emotional intelligence. Through her performance, Emma not only pays homage to Lovato's original work but also embarks on a poignant exploration of grief, forgiveness, and understanding.
Emma's vocal delivery is imbued with a sincerity and vulnerability that resonate deeply with the song's themes. As an acting coach, it's fascinating to observe how she navigates the complex emotions of the piece, using her voice not just as a musical instrument but as a vehicle for storytelling. Her performance is a vivid illustration of how music can serve as a powerful medium for conveying deep emotional narratives.
The cover also highlights Emma's ability to connect with her audience on a deeply personal level. Her interpretation of "Father" goes beyond mere vocal performance; it's an act of sharing a universal human experience. This connection is what makes her rendition so compelling and why it stands out as a significant contribution to the musical landscape. Emma Kok's cover of "Father" by Demi Lovato is not just a musical performance; it's an emotional journey that speaks to the heart of what it means to be human.

As you know, Emma, already in her young life, has suffered severe adversity. This is what gives her the gravitas, and emotional depth to perform songs like this at a relatively young age. Emma's ability to sing is essentially unaffected by her illness. The problem is with her stomach, not her lungs, diaphragm or abdomen. This performance was part of an annual event in the Netherlands called Liberation day. The venue was the American cemetery in Margraten where 8000+ American soldiers who died liberating the Netherlands from Nazi Germany in World War II are buried. Emma's performance here was in Sept 2023, just 2 months after her epic performance of 'Voila' in Maastricht. She considered her invitation to perform at this event a great honor. Your reaction and analysis was fair and balanced. I'm happy that you recognize the amazing talent and potential of this extraordinary young artist. All the best.

A beautiful reaction. It added to my own thoughts and feelings and I will enjoy watching it again. I can’t add much to what others have positively commented here, they reflect my own thoughts. I will say I always feel a bit like the sound technician just behind Emma in this video and I’m still trying to understand why I can feel so happy and elated by Emma’s performances at the same time as feeling emotionally crushed. It’s like being on some kind of crazy drug - I’m addicted! Just to confirm Emma’s birthday is March 12th, this performance was September 2023, so Emma was 15 yrs 6mths old in this video. Thanks again for a very nice reaction. I loved it.

That has to be the best review/reaction to a song from Emma that I've seen/heard, and at this stage, I have seen a lot, since first hearing Emma in our local cinema last August, I have been looking for her work on a very regular basis, you have picked up on so many subtle little things that are not even registering with most reactors, and your reaction is absolutely genuine, I wasn't worried when you spent a bit of time talking before going into the piece, because I knew what was coming, and how incredibly powerful that performance was, both in terms of the actual singing/acting and in terms of the effect on the people hearing it. This song was one of four videos on KZfaq from that event, and it's the strongest, the set up of the audio wasn't intended for recording for professional purposes, so it's not as good as things like Andre's tracks, but it is adequate, and from what I could see of it, the sound engineer behind her was a bit distracted himself, the emotions of that song well and truly got to him, so fine tuning at that point wasn't going to happen. I will link all four of the songs, the final song which is a duet is also very deeply touching, especially at the end, it is so much more than a performance, as you picked up, Emma is absolutely invested in the whole performance, she's several levels above being a singer/performer/actress, I don't have a word for it, but she's more than there, and technically, I will put some other links up in a minute that will probably blow you away with how they work. So, this event, liberation concert Introduction to the concert kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5t4dcd5vZzGlas.html Father (This video) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5tlZ6qk1rOsmmw.html Hero kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7-GeKyJ3LTRhGw.html You Raise me up, duet with Nico Wouterse kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mMd4Y62C2LLTY5c.html Of the four, Father is the strongest, but they are all very much worth the time to watch. Now, to some completely different songs, they're not performances in that sense of the word, because they were recorded at home in her home studio, a while before the whirlwind with Andre started for her, both of them are songs that mean a lot to her, because of the trauma of her illness, she doesn't make much of it, but she spends 22 hours a day attached to the equivalent of a boat anchor, two pumps that keep her alive, so the 2 hours she can be free, they are precious and special for her, and singing is her therapy and as you've seen more clearly than other reactors, she's so good at what she's doing. The first song is a Miley Cyrus cover of a song 'The Climb', Emma recorded that for Tube feeding week, a subject very close to her heart, and it's a real belter of a song, recorded when she was 14. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrWYrc91qtuncps.html The next is a Disney cover, from the film 'The little mermaid', Halle Bailey cover of a song 'Part of your world', kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9qoppCSs9-2eo0.html Ariel is expressing a deep desire to move from the water to being able to move freely on land, a desire for massive change, which resonated with Emma because she too has a deep heartfelt desire to be free, to be able to live a normal life, it's way more for her than tube feeding, she can't eat normally, a tiny piece of rice cracker with sliver of a food for taste and texture is the limit of what she can cope with, and there are a whole host of issues around things like the interface through her abdomen wall, her 'mickey button' as she calls it, effectively a man made connection through a stoma, so massive issues about keeping it clean, and the like, I didn't realise just how much is involved in coming off the pumps and tubes for the 2 hours she can be free, and it has caused her deep mental issues, unsurprising when you realise it started at 9 MONTHS, and her parents deserve a huge shout of recognition for the way they've helped her follow what must have seemed an impossible dream. Emma is touring with Andre Rieu for 2024, a series of 75 concerts around the world, it's very clear how close they are, and the depth of friendship that already exists with the entire extended family, and the mutual respect that is there, Andre is already giving Emma new challenges, and has clearly seen just how much she's capable of, recent audience captures from the first part of the tour in Europe came up with a sublime song, and I don't think Andre has performed it before, there is no 'official' video yet, so there are two audience captures, I'm hoping to be able to make a better mix, the first is a short, Emma comes out and gives a cheeky smile and raises a finger for quiet, and gets it, then launches a capella into the first verse, then Andre brings the orchestra in, followed by the chorus, then the sopranos, and the tenors, and if that wasn't enough, Emma then sings a verse in counter harmony, and in 15 years of watching Andre, I don't think I've seen him give a guest artiste such freedom and exposure, the nice part being that Emma is clearly totally comfortable with it, and it's a beautiful performance, and a taste of the sort of level that Andre will encourage her to soar to over the next year. Ein Bisschen Frieden, a song in German, which she's fluent in, she starts it with a finger for quiet, and then a capella for the first verse. kzfaq.infoi-eX4AGKbIM kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6ldhNeKx622n3k.html You will love the version of 'White Christmas' she did with Andre in December, more a capella, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMB1rMt4l8iplYE.html and she also did a version of 'All I want for Christmas is you', kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rqlygrmonLapook.html That's enough on the songs, I'm hoping that the way they've clicked, Emma will stay close to Andre for some time to come, he will make sure she's not over stretched, while there's no visible evidence of this, her stamina is not great, two flights of stairs with the pumps on is her limit, and for long walking distances, she will at times use an assistance chair, so Andre has to be cautious, but that's happening, and while she is with him, and under the cover of his wings, she's also protected from the vultures of the music industry, which is good, given her exceptional talent. I did put some comprehensive notes in the comments about Voila, I don't know if you saw them or not, there were a number of things there to widen your knowledge about Emma, especially relating to her first single released over a year ago, which is another deeply emotional song. A closing heartfelt plea to everyone reading these comments. Emma's foundation can be found at gastrostars.nl If at all possible, please join me in making a (regular) donation to her foundation, to enable them to help patients like Emma, and research this awful disease, and hopefully find a cure. One of their main people is a surgeon who has a lot of experience in dealing with gastroparesis, and she is not only a surgeon, but also suffers from the same disease herself, to the extent that as a result of her condition worsening, she's had to leave her role in the hospital, and she is now dedicated to the foundation, and working to help find possible new treatments, or even better the cure that will free people like Emma to live a more normal life, rather than be tied to the feeding pumps for so many hours every day. It would be wonderful news to hear that they have been able to change the outlook for Emma and others, it would be tragic if Emma were unable to continue to sing like she does, while she looks stunning on stage, her stamina is not good, so it is a very delicate balance to maintain her health, it would be so good to hear that the situation has been changed by the work the foundation are doing, Emma would then be free to spend more time doing what she loves so dearly.

@J.RonaldvanSteensel Thanks, it might not always show, I am trying to make sure to change things a bit between comments, there are certain bits that are needed, but around them, I try to put different parts in, to try and avoid hassles with the algortihms. That said, there are one or two that get a very negative and minimal response from me, they clearly do not check their work before uploading it, and if they did, they should never have even considered it as an acceptable upload, fortunately, they are rare, and tend not to be an issue going forward. Right now, I am just relived that Emma's mickey button swap wasn't too traumatic for her, and went well, what is pleasing is that she's now more able to talk about her health issues openly, most of those discussions are on Instagram, and even more so on Facebook, for a long time, she wasn't able to be so open about her health, it's a good sign of increasing maturity and strength. I spent some time in research after the artificial stomach nonsense a few days ago, and I have to admit, it did two specific things, it raised my admiration levels for Emma hugely, when I realised just how much she endures every day in dealing with her pump bag, or boat anchor, because that's the best way I can describe the bag with the pumps in it, and the mental discipline of dealing with the stoma and the 'mickey button', she doesn't talk about it, or draw any attention to that side of things, let alone the social isolation of not being able to meet with friends for a meal together, or enjoy a meal as a family, and issues like her stamina, she doesn't talk about that as such, but it's a lot more significant than she lets on, because she's determined to rise above it, seeing the assistance chair in her dressing room at Amsterdam brought it home, and it's one of the reasons why we don't see her as part of the walk out to the stage in the Vrijthof, it would be a drain on her reserves that doesn't enhance her performance, things like that, and then her mickey button change this week, as well as seeing the problems that other gastroparesis patients in the states endured, it put more than a few things in sharp focus, and I found myself struggling with that for a while, and I'm only reading about it, I don't have to live it 24/7, I'm not sure I would have the mental strength that Emma now so clearly has, to do what she does with the dedication and power she does it, that absolutely amazes me and impresses me even more, I had to tolerate a catheter 20 years ago for a number of weeks following prostate surgery, it wasn't easy, and only lasted a few weeks, how Emma copes as she does is only breath taking. Part of me wishes I lived closer, in theory, I'm retired, so have more time to do things I want to do than I used to, and if I was closer, I'd like to hope that I might be able to give gastrostars a bit of support, with the way things have changed for Emma and her mother, I suspect that their available time for day by day things for the foundation has been impacted, I don't think Emma was expecting to be touring with Andre in the way she is, but given how good a fit she is with Andre and the orchestra, I can't think of a better place for her to be at the moment, but for sure, it's not something they were expecting, and Andre's influence has been so good for her, she didn't need help with her singing, but Andre has helped her make that all important change from the girl singer looking for her future direction into the vibrant young woman who rose like the butterfly of her dreams on the Vrijthof back in July. Emma is very different now to how she was 12 months ago, and Andre has been a huge part of that transformation, and for me, it's been a good transformation, she's very much Emma still, she's lost none of her incredible personality, but she is a far more mature and polished individual, her stage persona is incredible for her age, and I see Andre gently pushing her to achieve more, as we saw with that beautiful performance in German recently, it would be so good if that came out as an 'official' release, but for now, I'm going to try and work out how to merge a few bits to produce something that's easier to watch. As for the future, I think I'd like to see her stay with Andre for more than just 2024, while his style of music might not be everything Emma dreams of doing, his gentle guidance and the love and support of the extended family is not something that will be easy to replace, and for now, unless the foundation find a way to help Emma's treatment, Andre's concert formula works so well for her, a full Emma show is not something that is likely to happen any time soon, I don't think she will have the stamina for that at the moment, if ever. When her growth spurt that seems to have been happening recently slows down, she might have more stamina, but for now, being with Andre seems to me to be a very good option, and for sure Andre has the knowledge and skill to help Emma soar to the heights that she's capable of attaining, and that's likely to be even higher than Emma has ever dreamed of, and Emma has the technicall skills to make her a valuable addition to his portfolio, I don't think I've seen a performer like Emma with Andre in the close on 15 years we've been following him, Emma's skill set and voice is very much unique, and gives Andre options that I'm not sure he's ever had before. Time will tell, for now, I'm just happy that things seem to be working out so well for her.

Hi, Usely I watch vocal coaches reacting. On a number of occasions I have wathed your reactions and it made me appreciate the performance even more and deeper. I sawn your reaction on Voila, on Hallelua (which was superb) and now this one. On the same concert you reacted to this time she also perfomed Maryah Careys Hero. With your reaction in mind I watched it again and aprreciated it even more. I also found a reaction to Voila fom a stage presence coach. That was different too, but does not have the same depth as yours. Thank you so much.

I was wondering if you noticed the sound guy who is monitoring her microphone? If you follow him through the song you will see him break down and wipes his eyes as she starts her bellowing portion as he knows no one would be watching him. She touched his heart and soul. He could hear he4 without the orchestra.❤️

This was either right before or right after the Maastricht-Shows with André Rieu. So she's 15 here too. The setting/site is a military graveyard with american WW2 victims, and there's an annual remembrance/memorial event during which Emma got to perform this. The orchestra behind her is the Dutch Military Orchestra.

Honestly I think this performance is one of the cases where she said she uses her anger and frustration from her bullying and the medical issues to "drive" her performances. Like, I don't think she's adressing someone in her family or so, but that that "angry power" comes from those experiences instead.

Consider a reaction to Emma Kok singing live in Houten town square at the Zapp Music festival June 2022 when she was just turned 13. She sang her first single ‘Laat mij een vlinder zijn’ (Let me be a butterfly) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oKejndOf1a29YoE.htmlsi=ON6j5MmDUthKoLJ5 The song she co-wrote with Tjeerd Oosterhuis is about breaking free from the constraints of her pumps and the mental challenges she faces. The butterfly emerging from its cocoon to spread its wings being the metaphor and something Emma has related to since she was a young child - watching Emma live you will occasionally see her In Ear Monitors have a butterfly logo on them. In this video, the way the even younger Emma interacts with the crowd is just magical. It also shows that her stage presence and confidence was there even then. Pierre Rieu when talking about the way she has captured the hearts of him and his orchestra has referred to her as being a “Podium Baes” strictly translated is ‘Stage Boss’ or probably meaning she commands the stage.

She does not - or did not - speak French. For Voila she learnt it phonetically, had a French coach translate it and help with her pronunciation so she understood what she was singing. Her mother tongue is Dutch and she also speaks the dialect of her local area (somewhat different to standard Dutch!), she also speaks excellent English and German.
