Article:
Angelina Jordan's 'Unchained Melody': A Theatrical Reaction
As an acting coach and a lover of all things performance, my first encounter with Angelina Jordan's rendition of 'Unchained Melody' was nothing short of mesmerizing. Angelina, with her distinct vocal style, brings a fresh and emotionally charged interpretation to this classic. Her ability to convey deep emotions through her singing emphasizes genuine reactions and emotional truth.
In this performance, Angelina's control over her vocal dynamics and phrasing stands out. She skillfully uses her voice to tell a story, drawing the listener into the narrative of the song. Her approach to the music is not just about hitting the right notes; it's about expressing the underlying emotions and connecting with the audience on a deeper level. This is where her performance crosses into the realm of acting, as she embodies the song's character and narrative.
Finally, the simplicity of the production allows Angelina's voice to take center stage, highlighting her ability to captivate an audience with minimal distraction. This stripped-down approach aligns with my appreciation for the art of storytelling in its purest form. Angelina Jordan's 'Unchained Melody' is a testament to the power of music as a form of storytelling and an excellent example of how a song can be transformed through a performer's unique interpretation.

She’s not acting either bud! She’s singing to the twin children in the audience of Narges Mohammadi, this years Nobel Peace Prize Award winner in prisoned in Iran some 9 years ago for advocating Human Rights in Iran. She chose the perfect song to sing to Narges children and delivered the emotion as only Angelina Jordan can. Gentle, warm and soft..perfect. That face you focussed on reminds me The King. Congratulations. What a fantastic reaction.

Totally agree with you Kevin. This song, combined with its original focus and purpose (the movie “Unchained” is about a prisoner longing to be reunited with his wife and family) is so fitting and apropos of the Nobel Peace prize recipient’s present, difficult situation. 😢 Brandon… you have focused on something I noticed right off the bat (and I’ve continued to notice upon subsequent viewings)… it’s that steely, strong determination in Angelina’s delivery. You did a wonderful job of putting words to what I have long noticed in Angelina’s performance. Well done! As to the *“Elvis”* connection… Angelina sung this live at her recent concert in Portsmouth NH and she shared with the audience that she was “channeling”* Elvis more than the Righteous Brothers. Angelina admitted that she has long been inspired by Elvis and she had the good fortune of meeting Priscilla and befriending her this past year. * my characterization, not Angelina’s

@@jerri5884 Thanks Jerri. Are you new to Angelina? If so, you’ll find out soon enough what a broad and deep rabbit hole you’ve discovered. *More info regarding Elvis…* Lisa Marie Presley passed away exactly one year ago tomorrow. This struck Angelina particularly hard (she is a true empath) and she sang a heartfelt tribute to her the night she found out about it. You really nailed it without really knowing the context. The original song is about a man in prison. The Peace Prize laureate is a woman in prison in Iran. Her children who are twins the same age as Angelina were just interviewed by the woman who conducted the interview. Angelina selected this song and her emotions are real. At the end of her performance she looks off camera to the children and puts her hand over her heart. Go back and watch your own reaction to see how spot on you were. Her approach was as if mom was singing to her children from prison. Subdued. Emotional and overwhelmed with longing for her loved ones.

Great comment. I was going to write something similar but you nailed it. Angelina always goes to a special place, but this time, it seemed like she was in prison letting the twins know how much they are loved and how much their love means to their mother. Angelina, like Frank Sinatra, does not let her singing get in the way of the story.

I was also going to make a similar comment. Angelina did an interview a few year ago in which she described how she is transported when she sings, to another, wonderful place. It is a key to her performances. On some of her stage performances she is not so invested, but in the norm it is one of her trademarks, and one of those qualities that I believes causes her to resonate with so many avid listeners.
@izzyboot9408

I too was coming here to write similar . You can tell when Angelina “goes walkabout”to her “beautiful place “! and that is when she closes her eyes , and momentarily opens and closes them quickly , if you look closely you will see her almost almost roll her eyes as if she’s not focused on the external situation, but still very much in a trance like situation. People / critics etc say that she should open her eyes more…. well? …they have no clue! . She’s ALWAYS done that , and RECENTLY , I’ve noticed something different, since being signed and working at the studio, she’s developed her use of hand gestures , from initially something similar to Adele , using one hand , or 2 , palms out , resolving into a closed fist , as in Easy on Me , b&w studio version , but now I see she’s developing her own hand gestures and patterns as we see here , and I really prefer this more internalised connection to her voice , and more specifically it would seem , to her pitch . I like this development .

In 2014, a little Norwegian girl was named and codified, a national treasure by both the King of Norway and the prime Minister. That same year, she sang for the Nobel peace prize winners all at the age of 8. In 2023, that same girl, now almost 18 will once again grace the Nobel peace prize stage and sing for the recipient once again. That young girl is none other than Angelina Jordan. Angelina at the 2023 Nobel peace prize concert. Angelina Jordan made history with this performance. Angelina is the only solo singer under the age of 18 to have performed twice at the Nobel peace prize concert. Angelina singing, "unchained melody" accompanied by KORK. When I learned the story of Narges Mohammadi, this years recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the history of the song "Unchained Melody", I fully understood why Angelina Jordan chose this song. Enjoy!

This performance, for many reasons, was very special to Angelina. Yes, she could have wowed us with power and belting, but she chose to handle it with care and tenderness. We can hear and feel the sadness and longing in her voice, crying out for the release of Narges and for her return to her family. The Nobel committee made the right decision in choosing Angelina for this occasion.

Not even Bobby Hadfield's 'Gold Standard' rendition permeates my inner being to the level she achieves here. It is the most emotion laden, penetrating version of the song I have ever experienced. Wonderful reaction to a sensitive, deeply felt performance by Angelina at a remarkable event honoring the imprisoned Iranian activist for women's rights. I'm sure Angelina took the trouble to fly all the way to Sweden for this because of the nature of the event and this important cause. Being part Iranian, I'm sure she well knows its importance and put deep feeling into the song for both the momentous event and the heartbreaking situation of Narges Mohammedi, still in jail, still longing to come home to her loved ones. Angelina is indeed a queen, a queen of the heart.

I take it you have not reacted to her singing HOW GREAT THOU ART as a preteen in the same key as Elvis. She has always had a beautiful lower range. We are not lucky enough to hear her beautiful falsetto often. Let alone her range in one song. Thats because she always serves the music and emotion not her ego. No over played runs or unnecessary belting only what is needed to convey the emotion. Lucky for us this song needed it.

That facial expression is comparable to one you can see often when you watch Elvis sing. You complimented this magnificent performance with a sensational critique of everything going on. Thank you. Many others will tell you about the circumstances involved in the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony and there is no question Angelina was singing this directly to the recipient of the award and her family (twins, a boy and a girl and her husband). That moment near the end I felt the cry in her voice and with Angelina everything is genuine. Not only does she feel the song and it's message of love but she brings us along with her into her world. We don't see it but we feel it and it's a beautiful place.

This reaction is the best one I've watched of yours. You pointed out things I've never noticed. I think history will look back on this Angelina performance as one her best ever under the age of 18. This tribute to Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist and mother received the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. She's being held in jail for her stand on women's rights. Her 2 twin children, also age 17, were present and participated in the tribute of their mother. The understated, classy, elegant approach with emotional and heartfelt vocals, really pulls at my emotions. Angelina is as good at telling stories as she is at singing. You feel this. She sings like a butterfly fluttering before soaring off to the heavens. 🍁

Great reaction. I can't affirm the analysis (not qualified), but it seemed plausible and insightful enough to me. And as others will surely point out, there is more of a story behind this song than most are aware of. This also accounts for her subtle, respectful presentation of the song. The orchestra, from beginning to end, was also very much integral to the quality of her performance.

This is at least the 4th time that Angelina has performed this song. At age 9 on a TV interview show, at 11? In a home made video, last September at her concert in Portsmouth New Hampshire and now at this Nobel Peace Prize tribute concert. FYI, although the Righteous Brothers cover is the most well known version, the song was already 10 years old when they recorded it. The song first appeared in the 1955 prison film Unchained. Angelina’s Iranian heritage and the fact that the song is about a prisoner longing for his love makes her performance of this song very appropriate given the fact that the Peace Prize recipient is a woman imprisoned in Iran for being an activist for women’s rights.

I was moved to see and hear Angelina singing in such an incredibly mature and charming way 7 years after the last time and in the same studio and certainly also with some of the musicians who accompanied her as a child, when she took her first steps towards his musical future. Unchained Melody Nobel Peace Prize 2023^^^^^^^ This video is a masterpiece that I have watched more than 75 times. Every time I hear the KORK Orchestra begin playing, I feel a surge of emotion because I know what is coming next: the most amazing rendition of Unchained Melody by the incomparable Angelina Jordan. She has a voice of an angel and a talent beyond words. Unchained Melody Nobel Peace Prize 2023 Some ask why Angelina Jordan would pick Unchained Melody for this event, Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights activist who received the prestigious award remains in Iran. One of the most popular and enduring love songs of all time, Unchained Melody, has a surprising origin. It was composed for a 1955 film called Unchained, which tells the story of a man who is incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. He yearns to be free and reunite with his wife and children, who are waiting for him outside. The song captures his emotions of loneliness, hope and longing, and has been covered by many artists over the years, but none in my lifetime of 76 years have conveyed such emotion as Angelina Jordan did at this performance. © Larry D. Really enjoyed your reaction by someone who understand how much emotion Angelina sings with, her empathy for people is manifested in her music.the beauty of her low registry is like chocolate syrup on vanilla ice cream

Great reaction Buddy. That was the exact expression I noticed on her face that went through me like 110 volts. Like Ray from vibe reactions said one day, She sings with her face and hands. He was correct and you are spot on with this reaction too. good job!!

She can sing in the manner of any vocalist. Angelina has always created her own version. When she was young her band called her “The Boss.” She told them what she wanted. She had the same requirement of Republic. She did not want someone else telling her what to do. If you think of her as sweet and timid you haven’t heard “Put a Spell on You.” Another, “It’s a Man’s World.”

Wonderful reaction to the Queen of Music....enjoyed this very much. Interesting that you picked up on the Elvis "lip curl" at the end....many fans have also noticed this in more than one song. Cheers. 🥰🥰

The twin son and daughter of Narges Mohammadi are seventeen,(the same age as Angelina) years old and in the audience. Angelina said that this was a very emotional experience for her. Performing for the Nobel Peace Prize event has been a life long dream of Angelina’s. She did perform for the Nobel children’s event when she was seven years old. That makes her the only performer to be invited twice to perform for a Nobel Peace Prize event.

The song is from a 50's movie about a prisoner in jail, later covered by the Righteous Brothers and then later again by Elvis (one of his last recorded performances before he passed) . As for the presentation, aside from the fact that Angelina has long ago got past the need to show off and belt things, the subtle performance is entirely fitting for the Noble Peace Prize.

A little history on the song itself. It was originally written in 1955 by Alex North and Hy Zaret and was first sung in a prison film movie “Unchanged” in the same year. The Righteous Brothers, namely Bobby Hatfield, brought it to new heights in 1965. The song has been sung by 100’s of people throughout the years. It was popularized again in the 1990 movie “Ghost”, again sung by Bobby Hatfield. You can listen to it from the Andy Williams show with Bobby singing. I love how it continually gets a new life every so often. I was a Teenager in 1965 and that version is my favorite.

Greg Fields, drummer, producer, and multiple Grammy winner. Greg Fields, a nine-time Grammy winner, son-in-law of the legendary composer Henry Mancini, and former drummer for Frank Sinatra, shared his insights on Angelina Jordan's Christmas Concert on Dec 23, 2023, he and several other major musicians accompanied AJ. He recalled that Sinatra once told him that the key to singing was not to let it interfere with the storytelling. He praised Jordan for having the same quality in her performances, saying that she captivated the audience with her expressive voice and emotional delivery. © Larry D. Pifer

I enjoyed your analysis of this highly respectful and emotional performance by Angelina Jordan. Angelina let us know she modeled her version of "Unchained Melody" after the version by Elvis Presley, so you were right on point. I am very surprised you didn't do some research on the background for this performance, as it was a tribute to the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Narges Mohammadi. I believe the connection the artist has for a given performance would have a huge impact. Here is the background. I thought "Unchained Melody" was a odd choice for this event, but have since learned the history of the song. More on that later. Certainly Angelina was thrilled to be performing back in her home country of Norway, where she is a national treasure, but this performance goes way beyond that honor. She first performed at the Save the Children event at the 2014 Peace Prize event, when she was 8 years old. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges, is currently on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian. We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family. I hope all the angels will spread the story of Narges and her mission, with the hope for change. In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". "Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release.

This is probably my favorite of your Angelina reactions. You mentioned that you sometimes get some mixed feelings from the Angels. Well we are sort of protective of our princess but after seeing her in this video maybe Queen should be the descriptive henceforth. When I saw this video for the first time, after I dried the tears and could think again, the thought that immediately came to me was Howie Mandel's this song this performance is going to change your life and career quote. This performance was the epitome of anything from Angelina so far. I was at Portsmouth and saw her do this live. That night that performance will live with me until I die. It was that beautiful but this should go down in musical history. I enjoy all of your Angelina reactions. Even the couple that some felt were not gushing approval.

Angelina has covered this song many times since she was very little. She approached this performance completely differently. It is much more reserved and gentle (as you mentioned) and I believe she did this because of the occasion and having the orchestra with her. If you want to see what she can do in her lower register, you have to check out her cover "How Great Thou Art" which she sings in the same low register as Elvis did. And she does it at 12 or 13 as best I can tell. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbJxeNxisa-sopc.html
