Elizabeth Taylor was always getting kicked by the critics that she couldn’t really act, that she was just a pretty face. I’ve always felt that Virginia Woolf was her out to prove they were wrong. And man, did she show em.

Jackie Gleason, Paul Newman et al when smoking in New York was the norm. The way it was, not saying it was good. Not so long ago, in a building that by then was nearly 100 years old, and probably demolished 50 years ago. And look at the way the men dressed. This is not only brilliantly filmed, but a slice of dreamy nostalgia.

Here's an honorable mention from 60s television: Check out "The Four of Us Are Dying" on The Twilight Zone. In just one scene Beverly Garland plays a despairing lounge singer who sees a man (Ross Martin) who seems to be her recently killed boyfriend alive after all. The way that her character comes back to life is mesmerizing.

I miss the lightning bolt era of real men and real women.
@JAI_8
@JAI_8 Ай бұрын
Culture in society inevitably accommodates the economic and the material of a society. Our bourgeois middle class expectations are now no longer affordable to us if we’re to keep our ruling class 1% oligarchy housed and fed and clothed and surrounded by the splendid toys to which they are “entitled”, so the rest of us have to change and adapt to accommodate their needs. We can’t afford the lightning bolt of real men and real women anymore. They both need to work now, and work full time just to keep their heads above water, so the relationships the lightning bolt ⚡️ was based on is sadly almost extinct now … last seen in significant numbers back in the 1990s I’m afraid. All the new model gender roles and relationships are simply people adapting to the changing economic circumstances we have to live with in order to keep the rich aristocratic capitalist ruling class 1% happy and continuously adding to the massive wealth inequality they’ve been steadily building with the help of trickle-down economics of the traditional conservative style government of the 1980s and then, subsequently, since the 1990s’ relatively unnoticed and quiet cultural “post-modern revolution”, with the help of both the “cultural right and left” and BOTH major political parties … Conservative / Republican and Labour / Liberal / Democratic. When the material conditions of society, especially the economic conditions, the wealth distribution changes so dramatically as we have lived through over the last fifty years, favoring a relatively massively over-rich ruling class top 1% / 5% and the rest of society goes from possessing about 2/3 of the wealth of society to about 1/3 of the wealth of society … people will adapt and adopt new social roles to accommodate their massively diminished wealth and power within society. At the time these movies were made the top 5% of US society controlled about 1/3 of the wealth of the US. This same group now in the 2020s controls about 2/3 of the wealth!!! This situation has been growing continuously ever more rapidly since the 1980s. The middle-class, that was the lusty consumer for the “lightning bolt” of these “real” men and women any of us who were alive back in the 50s to the 90s are sometimes nostalgic for, has had to adapt to vastly diminished economic circumstances and power in society. The men have been economically emasculated, and have had to adapt and find their “value” elsewhere, and the women have had to find something else to find attractive than that form of masculinity … because the number of men who bring it to the table has been vastly decreased. If we want the lightning bolt back again people, and want to find those lost “real” men and women … we need to TAX THE MASSIVE WEALTH HOARDED BY THE TOP 1% and get it back out where it belongs. Doing sexy things for a newly sexy middle class. Massive and immediate wealth tax for the top 1%. Progressive wealth tax for the rest of the top 5%. So many great things would start to happen in America again. All of this sh!t occuring today can be fairly blamed on the massive wealth inequality that’s been permitted to build over the last five decades.

no comparison among those decades with the 60s which was based on derivation of the new wave and kitchen sink dramas. A work of art has as its first component THEME and I have no difficulty in the thematic exploration of man's lower nature and drives I have every problem with it being valorized and see this as cultural phenomenon and expression rejecting our civilization. Please try to keep in mind the defects or glory of any culture are first seen in the art forms. Refer to Aristotle or Aqunias if too much try Ayn rand. This cinematic style portrays degeneracy and is correctly seen as the first shot of the attack on the cultural mores of the west by cultural marxism. All one can say is some of the production qualities were good and in europe the acting superb especially the usual suspects such as burton whose actors continue to put ours to shame. If the films of the 60s portray the life of the west we deserve to be doomed. Aside from a few like Mr Newman who was a grand person but mistaken in some of his POVs all the actors are short ugly and lacking any rhetorical skill. Draw your conclusion from this and when u do keep in mind even minor character actors of stage and film could at least speak beautifully. @@RickTBL
