Knowing what we know, it's the first sign of Mother.

100 per cent true. i read his biography. He was in all of the sequels which were sub par. Ironically because he was so strong in Psycho he was typecast

Her entire performance in Splendor in the Grass was so amazing

The backstory of this scene is that Natalie Wood's and Steve McQueen's characters have had a one-night stand and now she's pregnant. And this was before abortion was legal. That's the "problem" he alludes to. This movie is great and was radical for its time. But without knowing that, it would be hard to judge this scene. I agree with the comments about her bathtub scene in Splendor in the Grass, or other scenes from that remarkable film.

I beg to differ. Her steamy scenes with Robert Redford in This Property Is Condemned make me dizzy.

He was better in his later roles. “Papillon” and “The Sand Pebbles” for which he was nominated. Francis Ford Coppola wanted him for “Apocalypse Now” but McQueen didn’t want to work overseas. The role went to Martin Sheen.

Natalie's character is pregnant after a one night stand with Steve's character. That's "the problem" Steve's character mentions. This was a good 10 years before abortion was legal, so her casual attitude belies the panic her character must have been feeling. In those days, she would have lost her job and probably her nice new apartment, to say nothing of the social wasteland she would have faced as an "unwed mother". And the audience at that time would have known this. So, yes, this is outstanding acting on a number of levels.
