Action Cam Mini Gimbal Review - The Feiyu Tech WG

Here's a look at the Wearable Gimbal from Feiyu Tech. Most 4K action cameras do not have image stabilisation for the 4k/UHD modes, a notable exception being the expensive Sony FDR-X3000R amzn.to/2fY6GwV which uses optical image stabilisation. So that's where this device comes in, it stabilises the motion of any action camera that fits within its mount, but it's not perfect. Watch the video to learn more.
Feiyu Tech have already brought out a newer version, the WG2. I haven't tested this, but hopefully it rectifies the tilting issue of its predecessor.

Have you tested mounting the camera 'upside down' so that the lens is closer to the pivot? That might reduce the tilt by shifting the center of mass...
@Techmoan

I think that might have been the shot in the video when it tilted to the left instead of the right. The problem is that it starts off ok and works fine for a while...but then drifts.

Most likely the tilting is a bad motor controller, if it even has one of course. The easiest way to test this would be to get some quality batteries and change them out, usually glitching like that is caused by minor voltage spikes coming from the battery (ie a quick on off cycle from voltage drop). It could also just be a quality control issue as well, but for the price it *should* be better at maintaining its starting reference point.

A pity about the tilt problems, because the video go got from your motorcycle ride looks really dynamic with the bike moving and the camera keeping still. Especially the mode that keeps the camera level, that really conveys the lay of the land.

I hate to be the negative guy in the comments but I just wanted to say - I have the Feiyu G4 gimbal for GoPro; used it about 24 hours total, took it on holiday to get some snaps, the blocks that stop it completely spinning around failed and it wigged out and spun around til the wires inside snapped. I contacted Feiyu but all they said was that it was out of warranty and they wouldn't accept any responsibility for it. Pretty appalling customer service, if you ask me... I shan't be buying from them again.

I had the 2 axis wearable gimbal, it was fantastic, but it malfunctioned when I decided to mount it on my shotgun mount. The panning was beautifully stable, until I fired, and the recoil damaged the accelerometer. The little wire with the mini- USB cable is so you can power your GoPro from the gimbal batteries to extend shooting time. There's a plug-in remote control for them too to give smooth panning/tilt.

The tilting issue is bacause the SJ7 action cam is either too heavy or lighter than a Gopro which the gimbal was originally design for. To fix this you could balance back by using a coin , stick in on the other side to act as a weight (counterbalance).

I've got the G5 gimbal, with the Yi 4k and it has been flawless. There was a slight tilt at first power up but I re-calibrated it and it has been perfect since. It's a different form factor from this one of course, so not a direct option for an alternative, but it has been very reliable.

As in my comment whilst watching your video you can charge and use it at the same time. I bought the Hohem and if you're interested in one I suggest that one. It's $200 U.S when I got mine a couple of weeks ago. Mine has sort of an analogue nub like the PSP Go so you get all the features yours has but you can move it yourself at the same time. Also has an app to connect to it so you can fine tune the movements to your liking. It was on Amazon but I've seen it on eBay as well from china.

The sensor used in that type of gimbal is a six or nine axis mems chip, usually a combo of gyroscopes and accelerometer. It is usually located below the camera, in the cradle. The role of the accelerometer is to sense vertical direction (gravity) to be able to stand the camera upright, the role of the gyros is to sense angular accelerations and compensate for them (stabilisation) or "blend" them in a smooth motion (when holding the handle and turning the device to the left, the camera will follow, after a short delay needed to decide if it is a movement to follow or a perturbation to filter.) Problem is, every gyro suffers what's know as "random drift" where the values it's reading,well, drift, a bit,randomly, over time. The controller will interpret this drift as a perturbation (actually non existent) and compensate for it, the camera itself will then slowly drift, following the useless compensation computed by the controller. There is a need to zero the sensor regularly, either manually or by automatic algorithms. The cheaper the sensor, the more pronounced the random drift is. (It exists as well on gyros costings thousands, by the way). The sensor is also very sensitive to temperature changes, usually it translate into a drift always in the same direction (as opposed to random drift). I would suppose this is what's happening there. 4k filming, camera gets hot, sensor below also, and exhibit a repeatable drift always in the same direction. Easy to test: stand the device upright for a while with camera turned off, and check after a while if it still tilt always in the same direction, or stays where it was left. (Or possibly exhibit the normal random drift). Be aware that sometimes the board where the sensor is mounted may heat up by itself, and sometimes a second sensor is used as reference on the main controller board, which can also heat up even in static, especially if load is unbalanced. (Motors receive current to produce torque to hold everything steady, to mosfets on the board heat up), which would bias the test. This behaviour may explain different experiences by different users: various cameras leading to various level of unbalance and heating up from motors and boards, 4k filming or less computing power intensive modes resulting in less heat from camera, those things make a difference. Unbalanced load would normally have no influence on any kind of drift, beside via heat up of motors/boards/mechanic... Unbalance should only have impact on dynamic performance. (How heavy a shock can be and still being absorbed). (And yes, before anybody ask, I spent some time in recent years designing various stabilized systems for a living, although of much larger scale)

It looks like the gimbal perfectly balanced, leaning over to one side before you power it up. It's probably setup to be balanced out of the box for a GoPro 3 or 4 and your camera has a slightly different weight distribution. Most gimbals come with a small set of lead weights to help balance different cameras and lenses for this reason (they are just like the self adhesive tyre balancing weights). If your gimbal is perfectly balanced it might help with the tilt issue.

Suggest you try Zhyiun Smooth Q. It is primarily for smatphones up to 220g but it can easily accomodate any action cam (you cannot operate the touch screen but that is not a big problem on action cams due to wide angle), you might only need a rubber band to secure the action cam. The only disadvantage is you cannot mount in on a bike, it needs to be hand held, but it is great value for money (Im not being paid to say so just really like the product.

The tilt problem is because people don't calibrate it properly. A bike leans to one side and the handlebars also have an angle to them (I also ride). So when riding with the gimbal, it is not properly calibrated when done on the bike because the mounting point is angled. The camera stays level with the BASE, not the horizon. So whatever angle your base is at, the gimbal will slowly correct for that angle. Same goes for handheld mode. I've used this for 20-50 mins at a time and never had this tilting issue. Hope that helps.

I think the tilting is the result of the sensor(s) being ever so slightly off! Be it only by 0.0002 mm, but the cam centers itself all the time based on this little issue and doing that for a long time, results in the error stacking up more and more. The weight of the cam can also be an issue and all that adds up to it being tilted after a while!

I've been working with gimbal for 3 or 4 years (google stubilizer). The issue with the Feiyu tech ones is that the yaw support is abysmal for helmet mounting - the software does not let it be reduced to a slow enough degrees/sec to actually avoid the constant side to side hunting you get when helmet mounting. Also no dead band which makes it again, useless for helmet mounting. For something like bike or motorbike mounting it's fine - but as it's a 'wearable gimbal' the general point is for it to be wearable - imho it's useless for that. The only one I've found that actually allows (via pc software) to reduce the degrees/sec enough, and increase the deadband enough to work as good as my stubilizer failed kickstarter does (still use the prototypes for my paramotor flying all the time but it's got a bit worse for wear over the last 3 years ) is the Zhiyun Rider M I got a few weeks back. It is more expensive than the feiyu tech - but it works rather than being a door stop which is all my feiyu tech is useful for as its bog all use on a helmet. Worth checking out. My advice is - for 'wearable' gimbals stay away from feiyu tech - they are not up to the job. And I've a house full of different models. So far the ONLY one that I've found that cuts the mustard at least almost as good as my own design is the Rider M. See my channel if you want example footage - posted one yesterday for example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eruloptzxsWvaKc.html. Also, in camera stabilisation - optical or digital is not trying to do the same thing as a gimbal. A gimbal does far far more than any camera stabilisation does - especially when helmet mounted. imagine I am looking at my feet - the gimbal still ensures the camera is horizontal and shooting staight. not camera stabilisation can do that all all - bar a 360 camera - but the quality there for cropped shots is terrible even for 1080p crops.

I think the tilting problem is being caused by the center of gravity being off, you could test it by putting something like a ruler in place of the camera and see if it stays level.(then put it off center and see what happens) The internal gyro is reacting to changes in movement / direction and not absolute position.

I've had the same problem with some devices not detecting my touch. I found out recently that I have a couple genetic mutations that effects the way my body processes cholesterol and bloodflow to my finger tips. On another video someone mentioned taking B12 vitamins. A large portion of the body's ability to create cholesterol is via the bile acid, which is produced by the liver. B vitamins are responsible for liver health, and I suspect the dryness of your skin (also a cholesterol related problem) was what lead them to make that comment. Your hands look just like mine. It took a few months of a bit of a diet change, but my finger skin and bloodflow has increased and it seemed to help with the dry/flakiness of the finger tips. I no longer have issues with touch screens or fingertip coldness. I might recommend getting a gene test for MS; immune issues are common among Europeans, and cholesterol processing plays a role in the brain as well.

The funny thing is; ALl these gimbals are doing is simulating that there's a big heavy weight hung on the bottom of the gopro. Try it out, just put a bit of wire on the tripod mount, screw it into a gopro, and tie the other end to your foot. Cradle the gopro with one hand from the top, lens peeking between your middle and index finger. Now pull the wire tight, and voila, image stabilisation. The tech is pretty neat though, but for an absolute "skate proof" product, you can't go wrong with a bit of paracord and an m8 screw.

These gimbals are extremely popular with mountain bikers, and they work very well for them. The reason yours is tilting is probably because it's made for a gopro, and the weight is different of your cam. Check out channels like BKXC or Seth's bike hacks, they really show what these cheap gimbals can do

I have another model from Feiyu Tech for 2 or 3 years. It is ok for a motorcycle but you need to mount it on your chest or helmet. And you can fix this tilt issue. First of all you need to balance gimbal with your camera to keep it strait with power off. In my case I have to slide my gopro out of the gimbal(about 5mm). After this you need a small photography level (like this: digital-photography-school.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMAG0205.jpg). So you can put this level on the camera and use Feiyu software from the official site and fix this tilt. Yes, it's getting worse when you using gimbal for a long time, but it is much better if it was balanced and tuned from the beginning.

I used to own a Pilotfly Action-1. Although much more expensive, the quality of stabilizer was much better. I guess with these products you really do get what you pay for.

When you switch the gimbal off, it tilts to the side like it's not balanced. That tells me you might improve the tilting issue by adding a counterweight to balance it.

Tinfoil around batteries is asking for it! Even though they were wrapped in plastic. I'd love a SJ Star only got a SJ5000 WiFi! Much love

Mount this on a SoloShot, could make for a fun experiment. I think people are expecting way too much out of this if being used in sports, it seems more appropriate to walking speed.

I would just try to write the newer firmware to the SD card and run the upgrade process on the cam, as most Sjcam issues are related to shipping them with premature firmware.

I'm not sure, but the SJ7's touchscreen looks like a resistive touch screen. Resistive touch screens really only work reliably with the tip of a fingernail or with a stylus.
@Sekeletu

To me it doesn't look resistive at all. It's normal cap screen.

Screen is capacitive. It looks like Mat purchased the first batches. There is a new v1.18 fw which significantly improves the responsiveness.

Surely - you are joking. That's some pretty clean footage compared to previous SJCAMs or other action cams and fisheye.

one missing with this gimbal is a vertical stabilization. The shot still go up and down as you walk.

In regards to the tin foil: You can see in the other shots that the batteries are shrink wrapped in plastic, so there wouldn't be a contact issue.

I want to buy a gear 360 camera and mount it on one of these, then put it on a stick on my backpack as I walk around. You think that would work nicely?

Maybe a cheap attempt to hide them from an x-ray inspection? It's against postal regs to air-freight batteries where I'm from. Although that obviously would change based on your country.

If they start to heat up and catch fire... probably. but that won't contain the fire for long. Definitely a fire hazard issue and or scanning issue.
