The MASH ,Love Boat and Dukes of Hazzard figures made excellent civillians for COBRA to kidnap . I eventually used Captain Stubing as an Officer on my USS FLAGG. Still have him on the bridge. Cobra also used old Fisher Price vehicles for a while. Issac from love boat made an excellent personal lackey for Destro. Daisy Duke was the Baroness in disguise. The Duke Boys did double duty as civillians AND Dreadknocks.

G.I. Joe was always a Hasbro property first. When they went to the 3 3/4" designs, they asked Marvel to produce a tie in comic. However, outside of the original twelve Joes, they had very few ideas. Fortunately Marvel writer Larry Hama did and he was able to add to the mythology (and therefore toy line) and kick things off.

I don’t remember if they were before or after Star Wars, but Micronauts were pretty popular at the time. And I agree with you, that Fischer-Price news van play set rocked!

OMG!!! i used to LOVE playing with my Fisher Price Adventure People!!! I had the Androids, the motorcycle dude, and the Space Probe. Wow! I haven't seen these toys for forty years! Thanks for mentioning them! I also had Indiana Jones, Twiki, and the LONE RANGER (not mentioned). I had the TRON yellow cycle where you could rev it up and make it move by itself. But my absolute LOVE was my Clash of the Titans toys. I always wanted a Medusa toy myself (favorite part of the movie). But GI JOE will always be my favorite. Born in '73, I was the perfect age for the best toys of all time!!!! :O)

It's hard to find new and fresh material for Gen Xers about toys, but you nailed it. Great video man!!

The Kenner Indiana Jones figures' hips flared so they could ride the horse, as you theorized. They weren't 5POA, they were 7POA. Their knees were also jointed (except for Marion) so they could sit astride the Arabian Horse more naturally. These leg designs, as well as Indy's quick-draw feature, were carryovers from the earlier toy line for Butch & Sundance: the Early Years. The horse mold used to produce both Bluff and Spurs in that line was repurposed for the Arabian, so really the entire Indy line was designed around that horse.

I went to a lot of yard sales with my mom and grandma in the 80s so I was fortunate enough to get ahold of many of these, especially the Mego lines. My favorites of the ones you mentioned were probably the General Lee vehicle from Dukes of Hazzard and the Black Hole and Buck Rodgers figs. Fun stuff.

Loved my Battlestar Galactica figures. The Cylon's and Stormtroopers joined forces in many battles. Buck Rodgers teamed up with the rebels. I remember getting the MASH playset on clearance, but using it for my G.I. Joe's.

Had all the SW toys. I did get the ST ones, but I was getting into my early teens so wasn't playing with toys as much anymore, same when GIJoe came out. I really liked the Clash of the Titans figures because all the other ones had guns and they were a way to play out my Sword & Sorcery fantasies but was disappointed with the small line. When I was in my mid twenties I worked at a bookstore and a younger customer came in and wanted to see some SW collector guides. I showed him one and when he flipped it open to the middle it was a two page picture of the original figure line from A New Hope. I commented that I had all of them when I was a kid. He said wow, you'll be rich. I laughed and emphasized that I HAD them when I was a kid. He asked what happened to them and I told him that I played with them all until they broke and the rest I passed down to my brother who finished them off. He was horrified and couldn't believe that I actually played with them instead of collecting them. I told him that they were toys and that's what you were supposed to do with them, the collectors craze wasn't that big in the 70's (or if it was I didn't know I was in elementary school), besides if I hadn't played with them the adults that bought them for me would have thought that I didn't like them so they would have stopped buying them. The memories of the good times I had playing are more valuable than the few bucks I could get for them now anyway.

I started with Adventure People, then SW. I had a few Battlestar Gallactica figures, didn’t like the lack of face details. Didn’t get enough allowance for anything else. Great memories!

As a kid, I loved Star Wars AND Star Trek (still do). My figures from both series encountered each other...and characters from Battlestar Galactica, Lone Ranger, Clash of the Titans, Black Hole, etc did as well! It was all about using your imagination.

I had more than a few adventures with Admiral Kirk sitting alongside Chewie in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, while the Dukes were sitting comfortably in the back. Tron was relegated to a tie fighter, and the target of many a space battle played out in our backyard. I'm sure my Perseus and Pegasus were there, as well. They were soon joined by GI Joes and my Matchbox Robotech figs. Man... the 80s! What a time for toys. Even though I don't have many of these toys anymore, I have the Polaroids my parents took when we opened them up on Christmas. The expression on my childhood face is priceless.

I had some of most of these lines, but only the sci-fi or fantasy. Cylon, all Tron figures but Tron, Maximilian & sentry, multiple Crystar, a couple of GI Joe, DC Warlord's Hercules, etc. Brings back a lot of memories. I still have most of them somewhere.

I used any 3 3/4" monsters or aliens to fill out the Cantina and Jabba's palace. The only actual cross-over I did was when the Empire chased the Millennium Falcon to the "Haunted Planet," populated by Remco Monsters.

Re; the Star Trek figures, Decker if I recall, had one leg longer than the other, hence giving him a slightly off kilter stance, and I see the same stance in the stock image you provided too, that fecker would never stand up for long, I had all the figures and Ilia was always included in our Star Wars battles. Remember having the stunt rider from fisher price adventure people, no idea why I owned that as a kid in the 70s but I did. also, some of my fav figures were of the Micronauts line, those transparent looking figures were always included in Star Wars battles, surprised you did not include these as they were very popular in the mid to late 70s, even here in the UK.

In the early 1980's my mother would go shopping at Venture (Target), and would leave me to look through the toys while she did her shopping. So I remember seeing a lot of these toy lines. The Fisher Price TV Van and action figures survived my generation, went to the attic and were used the next generation.

I must be a perfect gen-x because I'm fairly certain that I had at least a few from every single 3 3/4" line you mentioned, except MAYBE Love Boat.

I bought every figure from every collection that you mentioned here that was available in the United States at the time they were in the stores, except for the MASH generic soldiers that came with the vehicles, which I didn't run across at the time. I still have them all today. Did you know that The Love Boat figures were put in the girls' section of the stores, making them hard to find for boys? I loved every minute of this video!

i remember back in Austin you simply couldn't find Tron ANYWHERE. Flynn was a peg warmer along with the warrior but Tron was AWOL. I did have the yellow light cycle tho. Loved it.

My cousin had that entire MASH camp, buildings, jeep, ambulance ... everything. Sadly, it's long gone...

Played with 4 of the Indy characters (the bald guy, Indy in the German uniform, sallah Sp? and the giant with the sword) Had a couple of Clash of the Titans ones. Lots of Star Wars of course. Good memories.

The only BSG figure I had was Daggit. I did have the Viper launcher, which was one of my favorite toys of all time. The only Black Hole figure I had was V.I.N.CENT. GI Joe? All of them. Every last one, including the mail in ones like The Fridge. My dad had them all stored in the attic along with all the other toys that would be worth a small fortune now. He sold the house after I enlisted and didn't empty the attic. Someone got a very nice collection.

Oh man I am grinning ear to ear! Buck Roger’s, Battlestar Galactica, and my personal favorite- Micronauts! And of course Star Wars!

I had tons of the older lines, but usually only a figure or two, like Clash of the Titans I had Perseus, Pegasus and the Kraken. I had both Chips figures, had the Evel Knievel and bike figure. Had a ton of adventure people, why don’t figures come with the stuff adventure people came with? I had the camping set and it had the coolest tent ever, plus a couple of the dirt bikes and figures, I could do an off-road motorcycle trip, man, those figures were the best to just play with, I actually miss that line, hell, I miss all those toys. All of those were outside of my favorite line of Star Wars, and later GIJoe (I think joes were the last toys I bought before girls became a lot more important). I still collect action figures except I collect the 1:12 figures and once again my favorite line (besides anime imports) is the classified line, they’re really killing it with the new line.

I got so nerd happy from this vid. The only figures I managed to get over here in the UK were a few of the black hole figures.

Of these figures I had Buck Rogers and Twiggy, I also had from BSG, the basic Cylon, two Daggets (brown and blond), the Imperious Leader, and that green big guy. I also had the two large electronic figures, the Cylon and Adams. I had a few of the FP Adventure People too. It's hard to remember being 40-odd years ago.

The Lone Ranger 3-3/4” line was great … cool horses.

We also had the short lived CB McHaul line that cashed in on the trucking craze.

Galoob also made 3-3/4" A-Team figures (O-ring type) in 1983.... they made a whole line - vehicles and headquarters playset.. and they made bad guys too (but they weren't O-ring, they were the Star Wars 5 points type)

That’s what the MASH set was from! I had it, but I bought it at a flea market second hand for a GI Joe base.

Yeah I had loads of Star Wars figures (after tiny-head Han, Darth Vader and Luke in Pilot outfit, I collected ONLY some droids and aliens from the lines), Star Trek figures ( Admiral Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty... and yes they did interact with Star Wars and BG figures, with the Star Trek crew being the main heros), 6 Micronauts figures, a Metal Man Radon, the entire first wave of Battlestar Galactica, and Buck, Twiki, Black Hole VINCent & Sentry and of course quite a few GI Joes before I out grew my toys. But I was an articulation snob... I strictly played 5 POA with 5 POA figures and 10 POA with 10 POA figures WITH THE EXCEPTION of Star Wars droids, my C3PO, Death Star Droid, R2D2, Power Droid and 8D8 and EV-9D9... oh and BG Muffet... because on screen their articulation was limited, so I imagined them fitting right in with the humans in the more articulated lines.

It took me way too many years to notice it but that Mork from Ork figure was, from the neck down, a retooling of the Adama/Starbuck body.

Remember during the 80s. Looking into those thick phones book store Catalogs book! Looking for toy section. Seeing what cool toys coming out.

I used the Fisher Price Adventure People "Safari Jim" as my pretend Indiana Jones with a basketball to recreate the rolling boulder scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Safari Jim is still one of my favorite action figures

I had the M*A*S*H* playset as a child but none of the figures. I was aware that they existed however the playset made a good base for my heroes and villains and came with a ton of pieces. I believe my mother bought it on clearance from Johnny's Toys.

My first and best ever action figures were Cyborg, Muton and Android. 50 years later I can still remember how they smelled.

I had so many of these lines. One that want mentioned was Flash Gordon. Those were pretty cool. I mixed those with Star Wars. Also mixed some of the smaller MEGO superheroes that they had made with those.

I had no idea that there were Love Boat figures! Now, I feel the need to search for a Julie!

For me, it was Star Wars meet Buck Rogers' incredibly malleable characters meet the Micronauts with their highly versatile vehicles. The fact companies made the figures the same height meant you could mix without problems. Those were good toys times.

I was born in 78 and had 4 older brothers. I had everything. Im not exaggerating i had 90% of everything in this episode. I ended up with all of my brothers toys being the baby. I kept everything until.......... my mother gave everything away after i left to backpack for a couple of years. About six large boxes of 70s-80s toys. I still lose sleep over it.

Thanks for a cool video. I agree with you on everything you said, but there were a few toy lines back then that I loved that weren't mentioned. Mego's Micronauts were and still are one of my favorite toy lines of all time. Very unique, creative figures and vehicles originally created by Takara. Also, 2 toy lines that often get overlooked but shouldn't, are the Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings toys based on the animated Ralph Bakshi movie and the Flash Gordon animated series toys from Mattel. All had very cool character designs, but the Flash Gordon had almost no vehicles except for an inflatable spaceship. These came out around the same time as the Star Trek Motion Picture figs. Those late 70's era figures were to me my favorite toys, and I didn't even mention the sublime Shogun Warriors line!

I had the Tron figures and the light cycle, and you will never believe wherei got them, my locally owned gas station, that shows you how big figures were back in the day.

I had Imperious Leader and the Cylon. For the Black Hole, I also had Vincent. And the dumb, random mustache guy from Buck Rogers. I'd have loved Buck and Wilma. Pegasus was great, and his wings ended up rubber banded to other figures to make the Angel.

I really wanted the Black Hole Maximilian, but in the uk at least, he was nowhere to be found. Weird when you consider he was the only BH figure most kids wanted, it was a bit weird how he was so rare.

Great video, but you missed two lines that really need to be included in the video. First, along with whatever Fisher Price did, Mego created the first-ever licensed 3.75 inch figures in 1975 with COMIC ACTION HEORES that featured superheroes form both the DC. and Marvel lines, plus some great packaging and great playlets. The other one is the Mattel one for the FLASH GORDON animated TV show Filmation made a few years before the 1980 feature film, the line that, despite how good some of the competing likes of BUCK ROGERS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and THE BLACK HOLE were (Micronauts included, though not always 3.75 inch) was the best of the non--STAR WARS space opera lines. The figures were amazing and so where some o fate accessories. Also, they just looked so good. Thanks!

I had/have Daggit, a mate of mine had the Silon and fighter as well as several Tron figures, a couple of Light Cycles and they all use to go at it - especially when my toys from Japan joined in - Voltron, Ultra Man - as well as GI (admittedly i had primarily Cobra and Empyreal/Bounty Hunters & Droids/Aliens - he had the good guys) Joe n Star Wars. There was no division btwn universes, ahh the chaos

Ok, the G.I. Joe ARAH line that started in '82 was produced *concurrently* with the comic. Hasbro got Marvel to produce the comic to help promote the toys, and the came out at the same time. Also - BRAH. HOW could you miss LJN's SUPERB Dungeons & Dragons action figures??!! They were BEAUTIFULLY crafted- very detailed, used real cloth, tons of accessories, even the packaging was gorgeous, with art by TSR's bullpen - Larry Elmore, Tim Truman, etc. Otherwise, great vid - the Bea Arthur reference earned my sub 😂

You missed quite a few.: -Crystar - Really wild line with loads of accessories that came with most figures (e.g., a campfire, racks of weapons, etc). It managed to be a blend of LotR fantasy that looked like Tron's figures or the Adventure People androids. -Lone Ranger - The 3.75" answer to the Marx cowboy toys. This was by Kenner and was even advertised alongside the Star Wars toys in the product inserts. -Micronauts - These predated Star Wars and is often credited with originating the 3.75" scale. -Universal Monsters figures from Remco (Sources say 1980) - Not a lot of figures and probably only one playset, but that puts it on the same tier as some of the aborted lines mentioned in the video. -Dungeons & Dragons - May be after your cut-off date, but that line seemed to be the culmination of the Sword & Sorcery boom following Conan, Beast Master, etc. minus the sci-fi or post-apocalyptic futuristic elements of He-Man, Thundarr, Blackstar (who had a line of toys worth checking out, though they were 5", I think). (Personal anecdote: I came out the movie theater after seeing Beast Master, and I went into Children's Palace in the same shopping center and saw He-Man toys for the first time. There was a blond muscled guy with a sword and a pet tiger, and I assumed it was merchandise from Beast Master, albeit with some artistic license taken to make the tiger green and all that.) -Other World - This one is a bit of a deep cut, but these seemed to borrow from Edgar RIce Burroughs' "Warlord of Mars" aesthetic mixed with perhaps the illustration style of the earliest editions of TSR's D&D books. They are worth looking up just for how much weirdness they threw at the line: Glow-in-the-dark accessories, beasts the characters rode that incorporated friction motors, bendy rubber bodies (and 4 arms or 2 heads even!) that went against the 5-points-of-articulation standard.

Yeah, CHiPs and Dukes of Hazzard, the tv show leads got o-ring figures, the supporting cast and villains were 5 or 6 point articulated figures. In CHiPS case it was because the baddies were retooled from their 70's CB McHaul line. I think Roscoe reused the cop tooling from CB McHaul, too. I'm not sure what the CHiPs villains were supposed to do. Steal cars from other toy lines? They sure couldn't steal the highway patrol motorcycles. GI JOE the toys technically came first. The Marvel comic existed because Hasbro couldn't make a cartoon due to laws at the time regarding animation based on children's toys (a law which would change not long after). But they could advertise a comic on tv using animation. So they went to Marvel, where NONE of the Marvel writers wanted to lower themselves to work on a licensed comic. So artist Larry Hama was asked, took the job and fleshed out the characters, wrote most of a 155 issue run from 1982-1994.

Had Calibos & Charon as well as the Kraken from Clash. Daggit would often join the droids from Star Wars, alongside Galactica's Imperious Leader & Ovion.

Mork was made by Mattel, his body was the Adama/ Starbuck body molded in red and painted in silver and black.

So after Star Wars came out, I desperately wanted SW toys (of course) so I asked for SW stuff for Christmas. I was super excited, was planning battles leading up to Christmas, there were a bunch of SW sized boxes under the tree for me. So Christmas morning comes along, I open my presents and my Parents had bought me a bunch of Buck Rogers figures, vehicles etc. instead of Star Wars, I was crushed. Eventually I got a bunch of SW toys, but to this day I’m still pissed at my mom for screwing that up, it ruined that Christmas for me (at like 7 or 8 years old). I don’t know if she just bought the wrong thing, or she thought maybe I liked Buck Rogers more (I truly disliked that show, which made the present thing even worse), or they were cheaper and she was trying to save a buck (probably the latter, cheap ass parents haha)

If only the Love Boat line had taken off...we might have Ethel Merman, Ernest Borgnine, Leslie Neilsen guest action figures.

I never mixed my figures, for some reason. Chewie and Han never let the Duke boys fly the Falcon, Muffy the Dagget never hung out with R2-d2, the joes totally snubbed everyone else, and Mork was all alone in his egg. These days I realize that I deprived myself of some awesome playtime experiences because of my rigid toy segregation.

#1 They are dolls. They have always been dolls and they will always be dolls. #2 You should cover the older and larger dolls that Gen X boys played with ... like Evel Knievel, GI Joe and the Six million dollar man. I also remember large star wars and star trek dolls too.

Ah... the messy Mego TV / Movie licences. You didn't mention the horrifically easy to break thumbs on non-Joe o-ring figures. Mego ones were constantly breaking. My holy grail is 'The Greatest American Hero' figures (unmentioned). Also worth mentioning the Knickerbocker Lord of the Rings toys and the Kenner Glamour Gals mini Barbie-ish toyline.
