In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn how to play the song "Shady Grove" by yourself on guitar (no jam track needed). This lesson includes 2 levels of difficulty. Level 1 is easier (all down strokes), Level 2 is a little more difficult with alternate picking and upstrokes for the right hand.

Jerry Garcia and Grissom named one of their albums after that song. There's also a nice backing track here on KZfaq.

I recognized it instantly as a tune Jerry covered. LOL. Amazing tune.

Great video! I like all of your videos that I have seen. You have a great way of explaining things! For what it's worth: Being from the Appalachian area, we don't pronounce Appalachian with a long "A", like most all media sources pronounce it. If you are from the area, we pronounce it App-a-latch-ian. Latch, like closing the latch on a guitar case. Again, thanks for the great videos.

That song is Matty Groves. He crossed the pond and became Shady Groves. Fairport Convention's version worth a listen.

! One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. I used to play it for my daughter when she was young. Eventually she asked me to find some other songs besides Matty Groves and Long Black Veil. I think she wanted something a little more upbeat. I do Matty Groves in D minor, F, and C.

@@stephenbouchelle7706 In my folk clubbing days we had a lady who sang this acapella every week so I have never actually played it but it is embedded in my musical memory. A lot of those old British songs and tunes have that modal feel: Scarborough Fair, King of the Fairies. A bit more to get ones teeth into (and ears) than 'G,C,D ' dueling ! Try hen's march across the midden and make it minor when the fox strike (funeral march for a bar) Happy days !

Definite medieval kinda sound. Remarkable! Watching The Witcher; taking a smoke break; what a freaking coincidence! A bard or minstrel riding a horse in the English countryside playing this song; I see and hear it...

That tune is older than Appalachia. Probably came over from Europe with the early immigrant's. Like seachantys the origin is lost.

Another nice piece! Sounds like a fun one to play along with. I know what I’ll be doing this weekend besides watching football. Is that a 00-18? What year? Beautiful guitar. I’ve seen it in a lot of your videos, and it has spurred the guitar buying itch in me. But don’t tell my wife. 🤫 😄
