Actors Whose Careers Were Ruined By Great TV Shows

An actor's career is arguably filled with more no's than yes's. That's why landing a major role in a hit TV series is a sigh of relief -- it’s not only a job but potentially a steady one that could last for many seasons.
Compared to a movie, acting roles on TV shows can last for years, and they give an actor a steady paycheck and a huge following of loyal fans. But being part of a long-running and popular TV show does have its drawbacks.
Once a TV show ends, many big stars have fallen into the trap of not being able to shake off the image of their popular character from the minds of fans. Here are actors whose careers were ruined by great TV shows.

Frakes' third film after _Star Trek: First Contact_ and _Clockstoppers_ was the (shudders) American movie version of _Thunderbirds._ He was basically humilliated off the big screen after _TB_ tanked so badly (considering how unfaithful and distorted it was to the source material!), and was forced to direct mostly TV episodes and documentaries to keep his Hollywood career alive. (Also, gaining a lot of weight has no doubt impacted his viability for being cast in front of the camera too...) Like you said, most _ST_ actors usually fade into the background (which is true of _The Original Series_ cast as well, despite their iconic roles) after their tenures. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy (RIP), Patrick Stewart and LeVar Burton are really the only names I can think of that have successfully maintained public profiles; the rest have disappeared into minor roles (not that _ST_ has ever made a concentrated effort to cast big names to begin with), moved behind the camera, or left Hollywood altogether. (Avery Brooks was already a college acting/drama professor before he was cast for _DS9_ , and actually tele-conferenced a number of his classes while in-costume because of time constraints!)

LeVar Burton has had a VERY good post STAR TREK :TNG CAREER by being remembered as the host of READING RAINBOW. *ahem* *cough* *cough* *ahem*..."Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high..Take a look, it's in a book, a Reading Rainbow! I can go anywhere." ,any READING RAINBOW fans on here???STAR TREK TNG was an important show to a lot of fans but no doubt,READING RAINBOW was far more influential to more fans.

I wouldn't really say it's a post TNG career... he started Reading Rainbow in 1983 while TNG started in 1987... though Reading Rainbow ended in 2006 while TNG ended in 1994, so we can simply say he had a more steady kind of success in his other major endeavor lol (Edit: fixed wrong TNG end year...)
@JAG51020
@JAG51020 7 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say the same thing, apparently Reading Rainbow doesn't count, because they made no mention of it here even though LeVar Burton hosted it for over 20 years. I grew up watching it too, and yeah, I still remember the theme song too! I remember one episode of RR featured a behind-the-scenes look at the set of TNG. I've seen Brent Spiner appear as a guest star in a few shows and I believe he's also doing some directing. Jonathan Frakes is now concentrating almost completely on writing and directing and that's why he is rarely seen in front of the camera anymore, but still very active in the industry.
@ErikGarrett
@ErikGarrett 7 жыл бұрын
Reading Rainbow is still going its just been taken online and that was through the efforts of Mr. Burton who I think has an executive position with the foundation/partnership. Hell, even Obama invited him to the WH for a RR press conf. I'd say LeVar has had a pretty good post-STNG career.

Agreed whilst he's not necessarily in a star role anymore I think the work he is now doing is much more important. There was a crowd funding project associated with the new version of Reading Rainbow a few years ago that was quite successful I believe and he was the frontman for that.

Maybe some of these actors just didn't feel like acting anymore. Especially if the show was so lucrative for them, at one point the cast of Friends was getting $1 million each per episode. If you're smart with your money, you don't have to work ever again if you don't want to.

Some of those actors don't know better than to move out of New York City or Hollywood where a restaurant will charge $7 for a cup or bowl of tomato soup when they could get a whole meal for that price elsewhere. Also real estate in those places is ridiculously high is part of reason they go broke. Of course some of them gamble and buy cars and houses for friends and family not realizing their career might end at anytime with no warning so are use to a big income that does not last. Mike Tyson the boxer made over $300,000,000 and went bankrupt because he never learned how to budget and save money.

Agreed. Actors can step out of the spotlight for any number of reasons. For example, Lauren Ambrose fronts an awesome ragtime band and is on Broadway now. How would we know which roles have or haven’t been offered them since? I feel sort of insulted on the behalf of the actors mentioned, but I’m sure they’re doing fine as it’s not exactly fair to say that success has eluded them.. obviously.
@ko7577

@@VerdeeMusic Correct. When you have a huge hit on your hands and money to play with, it's usually a choice about whether or not to accept a role. I was thrilled she finally accepted the role of Dorothy on Servant and made brief appearances in Yellowjackets. It's not that their career was destroyed, it's that after those bigger roles, you have the power to say no and focus on what you want to focus on. But she's always been a presence on TV here and there over the years, and she's been active on Broadway.

There have been talks about a reboot for over ten years now, WB must be allergic to money not to do it already. On the other hand, the TV landscape have never been this savage in TV history. Any show that is average get dumped because the top shows pull that much of the audience time. Alf, Fresh Prince and Millenium would never survive after one season today.

Lauren Ambrose recently did Eliza in My fair Lady on the stage (forget where and when). It's pretty clear from clips of her performance that the skill set she needed to bring that character to life is far more in her style. I wouldn't be surprised if she remains in musical theatre forever, she looked like she was having a wonderful time... sad for us, but good for Lauren, I think she deserves the love she gets for her work on the stage.

She also starred in 4 seasons of Servant, and she brought such a spirit to that role, it was a pleasure to see her acting on TV again. Apple really botched their advertising for Servant by attaching it too much to M Night's name. He directed a few episodes, but it was written entirely by other people. The subject matter is interesting, it keeps a sense of humor even about such a dark concept, and it was just amazing to watch. I avoided it for 4 years because of how Apple advertised it. I finally broke down last year and watched it because of Lauren, and I was so glad I did. She really did a great job in that role. I also enjoyed her all too brief appearance in Yellowjackets. A lot of these actors and actresses are still out there, they're just not starring. But they're there, and every time they show up it's a treat.

But yeah, buy a studio, make films, put themselves in those films. Why haven't they done that? Simple. They're busy spending that money, enjoying that ridiculously EASY life. So don't even waste your time feeling sorry for them.

And once again, you guys screwed up! #1 slot easily belongs to Robert Reed. Yup, going to have to go back a few decades for this one. Why him?... He was stuck in a contract and forced to be the dad on The Brady Bunch. He HATED the role. Didn't matter how popular the show was. He wanted to leave, he wanted to pursue other acting opportunities. Apparently of which there were many. But a certain executive producer said "No" each and every time. When the show ended, everyone knew him as the dad on The Brady Bunch. Not only could he not get work after the show wrapped, but unlike "Buffy" he couldn't go after other acting jobs while the show was still on the air. None of the others on this list suffered from that issue.

I would add 2 names from classic television - Bob Denver's career was killed after playing Gilligan on Gilligan's Island. Even though he was immensely popular for doing Maynard Krebbs on Dobie Gillis, he couldn't escape Gilligan type roles. Even more typecast was Max Baer, Jr., who played Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies. He said Jethro typecast his so bad his career in films and tv was dead.

Most of these actors really didn't have careers before landing on a hit series, Geller, Schwimmer, Parker, and Alexander were on the B-List when it came to Hollywood casting. Indeed the boost that the series gave them assured that getting the next role wasn't about paying the bills but working for the pleasure of it...

There's no indication or guarantee that any actors would flourish if they hadn't hit that starring role in a TV show. What sucks about being a known actor (especially a big one) is that they usually spend the rest of their life trying to kill that image to prove they are not that character.
