Actraiser Renaissance: A Worthy Re-Imagining of the Super NES Classic?

A surprise 'drop' at last week's Nintendo Direct, Actraiser Renaissance aims to re-imagine and enhance a stone-cold SNES classic... but the results are mixed to say the least. John Linneman and Audi Sorlie compare notes and take a look at the game across platforms. Note: we've now confirmed conclusively that this is developed on Unity.

On console, you can view intellectual property notices for each game, which will indicate if a middleware like Unity or Unreal is being used (as required by the terms of service). That is a more straightforward way of looking it up than looking at job listings, especially since those could have been for another project.

I really wonder how many of these Unity problems stem from the engine's default fixed update (physics update) being set to 50hz instead of 60. You can easily fix this by going to the time menu and changing the fixed update time from .02 to .01666667. From my time on the Unity forums, these camera issues are something a lot of devs don't even notice.

How do you bring up the menu your talking about in game? I've been trying to play Subnautica in VR and they disabled 'frame time physics step' in the last official update. The beta build version apparently is fixed, but that doesn't work with the Quest 2 headset currently. The game in VR currently makes the camera vibrate rapidly whilst walking over surfaces, very uncomfortable in VR.

Besides the technical issues mentioned here, what really annoys me in this game (as well as in others that do the same) is the background only scrolling horizontally while the foreground scrolls vertically as well. I know it's not a huge issue, but for me it creates a sort of jarring disconnect between the scrolling layers that takes me out of the game.

Actraiser 2 is one the most underrated sequels of all time. It’s a fantastic, difficult , highly skill based, arcade style 2-D action game which deserves much more praise then it gets. It’s only flaw is that people won’t forgive it for not having the simulation aspect of previous game. If I listened to the Internet about that game I would have never experienced it’s greatness. I wonder how many people that complain about Actraiser 2 actually have taken the time learn and complete the game?

It's funny that you mention the scrolling jitter, since the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters suffer from a similar problem. Everytime the camera moves with your character, everything starts to lurch uncomfortably. It bothered my eyes enough that I returned FF4 on Steam about an hour after I bought it. It made me sad because I really love that game, but the problem was just too distracting to ignore. I'm glad the effect is at least not as pronounced on an action game like ActRaiser, but there's no reason why either of these games shouldn't be as smooth as their SNES counterparts. On a sorta related note, does the hero guy remind anyone else of paladin Cecil?

Modern engines aren't as well-optimized for 2D as they are for 3D, leaving game devs to pick up the slack. However, most devs who are drawn to 2D projects are more interested in the more high-level side of development, so they usually don't mess with the engine at all (plus, the mainstream engines tend to require a more expensive license to allow modifications, I think, and most 2D games are lower-budget). 2D has its own technical challenges, but 3D is where the glory is, I guess. Nobody's impressed when you take a 2D game from 40fps to 1200fps, unfortunately. Another common issue is that 2D games are CPU-bottlenecked. The rendering may be simpler, but that doesn't mean the game logic is. For real-time games, it's often quite complex, *and* it often doesn't take advantage of the GPU the way 3D game logic often does, because 2D game devs tend to be less familiar with that stuff, or because it doesn't apply as cleanly. Lastly, Unity is very commonly used for 2D games as it's the mainstream engine with the best-developed 2D tools, but Unity is... not without issues, as demonstrated in this video.

I really liked Actraiser on the old SNES and it seems very much worth checking out once it gets a working performance patch. Why do so many Unity engine games load slow though. Is it a final code compiling issue that makes the data sizes unnecessary big or to spread out? That could explain the usual hitching when the games are loading new data. Only a powerful CPU + SSD can keep up.

Thanks for the analysis. I was planning to get it on Switch, so it's a bummer to hear that's got some noteworthy issues. The visual settings you suggest turning off don't really add anything to the game. The god rays make it look like you're getting an intermittent haze/glare. It looks cleaner with them off, IMO.

Reason 737 to own a PS5: You can enjoy side scrolling (and top down) 2D action from the previous generation at an almost locked 60fps! Jokes aside, I feel like this game started out with mobile being the target platform. Pre-rendered cg backgrounds aren't as egregious on a 5-inch screen. But, as the game matured proper console and PC versions became obvious. Almost everybody is talking about how the later game portions shine. Hopefully we'll get a performance patch sooner than later.

I liked the Fillmore section more than others seemed to. The TD chunks dragged on a bit long, but everything gets way better after Fillmore. Also didn't have a problem with pre-rendered graphics. Then again, I grew up with DKC on the SNES and other games using a similar presentation. Maybe I'm old. Hope we get more Quintet goodness like Skyblazer and Terranigma.

See, DKC did it AMAZINGLY well, actually taking the time to ensure the graphics matched up to the angle and design of the stages they were on, and vice versa. They also weren't muddy, uneven pixelated blobs, either.

If the camera is running at 50hz, it's because the devs are updating the camera position in Unity's Fixed Update (the physics update), which they shouldn't be doing obviously. The fix is literally moving that camera position line of code to LateUpdate, which happens at the end of every frame. Most likely they are also using Cinemachine, Unity's camera system, which means the fix is even simpler since there's a dropdown selection, no code needed.

There's absolutely no reason they'd bother emulating the SPC chip in-game. That'd be a lot of headache for no actual gain. Undoubtedly the new tracks are just digital audio, recorded from Yuzo Koshiro's setup.
