Legendary actress Olivia de Haviliand is celebrating her 100th birthday today. In a rare interview, De Havilland is finally breaking her silence on Hollywood's most famous sibling rivalry. De Haviliand is a two-time Oscar winner and last living remnant of Hollywood's Golden Age. In the interview she finally talked about her true feelings about her late sister Joan Fontaine, revealing that she calls her "Dragon Lady." De Havilland said the "legend of a feud" with her sister was first created by an article entitled "Sister Act" in Life Magazine . The article followed the 1942 Oscars, where both sisters were nominated for an Academy Award. Joan Fontaine, at that time, was the lesser known sister. She won for the movie "Suspicion". De Havilland, meanwhile, had been nominated for "Hold Back the Dawn." De Haviliand said "A feud implies continuing hostile conduct between two parties. I cannot think of a single instance wherein I initiated hostile behavior. But I can think of many occasions where my reaction to deliberately inconsiderate behavior was defensive."

Unfortunately Olivia has passed on. Marsha Hunt is still alive in 2022 and the oldest living and one of the last surviving actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. At 104, she is also the oldest living member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Don’t know why they said Olivia was the last living remnant. I believe there are others from that era still alive.

It started early on in their lives, and later in life, Olivia wanted her mother have an operation at the age of 88, Joan would not agree to that, saying it was up the mother. I don't know if the operation took place, but later, when the mother died, Joan was touring with a show, and Olivia made no effort to track her down to tell her about the death. She sent a telegram, which Joan received two weeks later. In all I have read about these two, Olivia was definitely the bitch of the pair.

OLIVIA, to me, is not telling the truth. the "feud" goes back to before they were actresses, i read the book on their lives. it goes back to childhood, and their mother, pit them against each other, and OLIVIA was the openly obvious favorite of their mother. she chose OLIVIA's side in everything. what kind of mother does that? in that alone, animosities could have very well fostered in JOAN's attitude towards OLIVIA. there was also an incident where JOAN claimed to have been sexually, or a version of that, molested by their father. is it or is it not true, who really knows, but the mother and OLIVIA did not believe JOAN. it could also have been JOAN grasping for some sympathy and attention form their mother, but i doubt that she would have intentionally done that to a father she said she loved. it maybe an issue of desperation in trying to cope with the abuse, or attention seeking. as to their careers, JOAN was the lesser known, but better critically successful in the earlier years. to go even further, their mother did not want JOAN to use the family last name, and JOAN decided to use their mother's maiden name instead. see, the mother chose to have OLIVIA use the family name, and JOAN take a back seat again. OLIVIA was more beautiful, and given those kinds of parts, where KOAN given victim parts, or mousy parts. in later years, JOAN wrote that when their mother dies, JOAN who was out of the country working, said OLIVIA purposely kept her out of their mother's funeral arrangements, and memorial. OLIVIA said she could not reach her, and i think OLIVIA was lying, how many people associated with JOAN would not have been able to get in contact with her at a moment like this in her life? it sounds made up that OLIVIA could not reach her. OLIVIA seems to make herself seem out of the loop, or an innocent bystander, but i do not buy that. she says all of this now, because JOAN is now dead, and cannot refute, or defend herself. how low can a sister go?

Judging by Olivia's remarks, it is obvious that while supremely talented, was a self righteous narcissist. I can see why her sister wouldn't have liked her.

Olivia resented her sister......Joan has been much more humble when speaking about Olivia. Joan got better roles and IMO was a much better actress.

I disagree. I liked Joan, but in her three best roles Jane Eyre,Suspician and Rebecca she played the same shy young girl. Olivia,on the other hand, had a greater diversity of roles.

sleedolfine15 I think you need to look again. Constant Nymph...Letter To an Unknown Woman....plus many more Excellent cinema quality IMO. The only thing that stands out re Olivia for me is My cousin Rachel.

Besides Gone With The Wind, Olivia was wonderful in the Snake Pit, the Heiress(where she transformed herself from a shy, naive young girl to a cold, vengeful woman), To Each His Own, Hold Back The Dawn, etc. and I'm not even including the numerous films she did where she was always Errol Flynn's best girl.

Joan had more appeal, in my opinion. Something about Olivia, to me, seems so artificial, so staged, so fake and manufactured.
