14 - 18 Acura MDX 16 - 20 Honda Pilot 18 - 20 Odyssey
14 - 20 RLX 15 - 19 TLX
These are the Acura and Honda vehicles powered by the 3.5L V6 engines with no power steering pumps (that is, replaced by a electric motor assist power steering system). The belt replacement procedure is different when compared with the hydraulic power steering system. This video will show you step-by-step on how to replace the timing belt, water pump, idler pulley and tensioner pulley performed on a 2016 Acura MDX. The procedure should be nearly identical with other Acura and Honda vehicles (list show below). This video was made possible by the GMB Corporation who was kind enough to provide OE (Original Equipment) quality replacement parts to perform this service. GMB is a Japanese auto parts manufacturer established in 1943 and maintains a global presence in the auto parts industry. Thank You GMB!
The timing belt service interval is approximately 105,000 miles or 7/8 years...whichever comes first. With 100,000 miles on this MDX, either the belt was stretching or the belt tensioner was beginning to fail.
Unless you have a powered impact tool used with 19 mm high mass impact socket, removing the harmonic balancer bolt is next to impossible. If you have no prior experience replacing a timing belt, expect to spend anywhere between 6 to 8 hours to complete the job. Replacement of the water pump will release coolant from the engine block. This would be a good time to change out the coolant from the radiator which would constitute a complete fluid exchange. Acura / Honda coolant, which is blue in color, will start turning green to indicate the coolant is beginning to wear out.

While watching this repair on the timing belt, which is another good video, I realized you are not the person with the camera doing the videoing. You have a camera operator doing this, that in my opinion is really good at it. With all of the lighting, zooming, angles and the close-ups involved while still allowing you to see and do your work. They deserve a little credit for all they do to make these videos and you do as well for all labor, little tips and details involved. Same goes for the editing and then posting them on youtube. A big thank you and to the crew as I watch all of your videos.

Thanks and appreciate your observations. Yes my channel partner both records and edits the video. And as you can see, he's gotten very good at it. Editing is the most difficult for him. Around 1 hour of editing for every minute of video you see. And we're not using any expensive fancy camera. Just a LG smart phone. He can't get into tight spaces with a standard sized camera for close ups.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I plan to remove the crank pulley bolt with a socket and extension and a long breaker bar. How do you keep the crank from turning while applying pressure on the bolt? How many miles on your MDX when timing belt was replaced?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 2 жыл бұрын
110k miles. They sell a tool that fits into the 6 point indent in the harmonic balance. The tool than attaches to a 1/2" breaker bar to prevent the balancer from moving. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that well for the v6 engines. The bolt is on way too tight. A high mass 19 mm impact socket with an impact tool is the only way to go.

I first removed the crank pulley bolt to relieve the 200 lbs of torque on it using a high torque impact gun with a high mass impact socket. After I got the lower timing belt cover off, I put back on the bolt under light torque so that I could move the crankshaft back and forth to align the timing marks. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your helpful videos with lots of details. I saw others using 47ft-lbs+60o to tight the crankshaft bolt, but you simply used impact wrench to tight it. I like this simple way, but not sure how to control, any trick? In addition, after re-attach the ECM, any electronic part needs to reset or take care of?
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your post! 47 to 60 lbs is definitely not the right torque. More like 180 lbs ... which is why even professional repair shops struggle to get the bolt off even when using air power impact tools. I've seen some videos where they're using a 8 foot long breaker bar with the car up on a lift. Something an at-home repair guy wouldn't do! The 19 mm high mass impact socket makes removal and installation really fast and easy used with a electric impact gun. Nothing has to be reset after reattaching the ECM.

I've read on some forum where guys having to do this with cheap after market parts and breaking shortly after. Do I need to go to the dealer and get the expensive parts or do you have other suggestions. thanks
@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro Жыл бұрын
Thanks for you comments. Companies like Honda, Toyota, Nissan do not manufacture many parts that go into their cars. They subcontract to large international suppliers such as Denso, Aisin, NGK, GMB, NTN, Koyo, Bando, Mitsuboshi, Yokohama, Bridgestone, Akibono to name a few. So any parts kit from these vendors are of high quality, dependability and durability.

Seems like the more teeth the better, and probably 18", not sure 3/8" or 1/2". @hardlymovingpro

Both kits use the Japanese brand Mitsuboshi timing belt. With respect to the water pump, the Aisin kit has the Aisin water pump, NTN idler and tensioner bearing. The GMB kit comes with their own brand water pump and bearings. From my observations, there's no qualitative difference and the parts longevity is the same.

A little over 100K. The old belt had slightly stretched causing a mild hesitation in acceleration from a dead stop due to the camshaft being out of time with the crankshaft. Problem disappeared after a belt replacement. You cannot judge the longevity of a belt and its' pulleys based on appearances.

Anyone have an idea of how to get the crank pulley bolt off? I broke a 1/2" drive extension. I ordered the high mass socket referenced by the video and two different 120V impact wrenches couldn't break it loose. An aged Jepsen and a new 1000 ft/lb HF Bauer. Trying a 3/4" socket and breaker bar tomorrow if I can borrow them.
@joeaverager
@joeaverager 2 жыл бұрын
Problem solved. My original 1/2" extension bar was not made of very springy steel. So it broke. Replaced it with two extensions from the local auto parts store. One was $12, the other was $18 I think. O'Reilly Auto parts brand. Tool stack was: 19mm impact socket short, two chrome extensions, breaker bar, jack handle for cheater bar. Everything was budget 1/2" drive tools. Used floor jack to support the end of the extensions long enough to get the breaker bar past the fender. It took 180 degrees of rotation to get the bolt to snap loose. Never could get my electric impact gun to break the bolt even with the Lisle mass socket. The secret ingredient may have been heat. I heated the washer behind the crank bolt for 3 minutes. Simply moved the flame in a circular motion. Took the heat off, put the socket on the bolt and the extension on the jack and rotated. SNAP! Loose.

@hardlymovingpro
@hardlymovingpro 2 жыл бұрын
No way to tell unless you take the dust covers off. It's not the belt going bad that causes it to break but rather the tensioner and/or idler bearings wearing out. When the worn bearings begin to wobble, it places too much stress on the belt and the belt will snap. In most cases, the worn bearings will make noise on cold start ups.

You'll have to coordinate rotating both the crank and cams to their TDC marks without the valves opening against a piston already at TDC. If you can move the crank around 30 degrees before or after TDC, you should be able to rotate the cams 360 degrees without the valves touching any of the pistons. Otherwise, start by rotating the crank. When valve resistance is felt, rotate the crank a little then try rotating the cams again. Repeat until both cams are at TDC. Then you should be able to rotate the crank to TDC.

@@hardlymovingpro thank one last question I end up breaking the top bolt to the timing belt tensioner. Do you think there enough room with an angle drill to drill and tap it out?

Yes, it’s a v6 engine and since I’m going to change sparks plugs too,is it advisable to take them out so it would be easier for me to turn the camshaft bolt@ 6:30 (alignment marks) ? Thank you

If you want. But not that hard to turn the engine with the plugs being in.

What’s the torque spec on those 2 bolts(14mm) @16:59 ? I know the other 1 bolt(17mm is 47ft lbs) @16:59 holding the motor mount. I’m getting all the info to do the job next week, also did you need to disconnect the negative battery terminal? thanks again

I don't have the torque specs. Suggest you get that from a source online or purchase a vehicle specific repair manual for around $15 at your local retail parts shop.

I don't understand why marking the new belt makes a difference. I put a new t belt on a TL without marking and the car runs great.

It's for the newbies not comfortable doing a belt replacement for the first time. On Toyota V6 replacement belts, paint alignment marks are provided; Honda doesn't.

One thing this video doesn’t mention is when removing the water pump make sure BOTH guide pins are still attached. I had one stuck on the block and it wasted me hours of time until I realized what happened.

Use to be around $800. I guess with inflation and lack of good mechanics, it's gone pass $1,000. Dealers are pushing up to 1,800.

@@hardlymovingpro I was quoted $800 last week in the southeastern part of the USA by an independent shop. The Gates belt kit I purchased online was ~$180. I'll do the job at home. I've done many four cylinder timing belts, this will be my first V6. Your video has been a big help b/c the video quality is high and you are doing the task on the very same vehicle - not an older Honda product with hydraulic steering for example.

All the videos I’ve watched so far aim to position the timing belt without disrupting the established top dead center (cam and crank sprockets) . I’m due for this job and I was almost confident I could wrestle the belt in there without moving the timing marks but this process seems more precise than the rest of them ensuring proper belt tension. Questions: 1. How did you know which old belt mark is corresponding to exhaust cam; intake cam and crank? Did you mark them and not explain in the video. 2 is it possible to over tension after placing the belt on the intake cam (when turning it clockwise) and turn the exhaust cam as well. Is the old belt a bit stretched out which could give you different outcome in the new belt when transferring the marks? 2. Are you running a chance of being unable to turn crank/cam because you are loosening the bolts holding the cogs. 3. Lastly, which kit did you use and can you talk about its quality and longevity. I’m torn between ordering an Aisin vs continental (which I think you used in this video) vs OEM parts(which come out to $600). Have you used the kit in the past and know it could go 100k without any problems? Thank you for the video and I appreciate all the new once’s this being an Acura with no power steering pump and computer in its place. I had to change the motor mount in the past and I was just working around the computer and you have explained very well on how to remove it. Thanks again! Big like 👍
