To anybody complaining about the aspect ratio: the film was shot on a 35mm Arri camera, then letterboxed from the 1.77:1 ratio to the 2.39:1 ratio as seen in the trailer. Even the most IMAX-y movies aren't shot entirely on 70mm IMAX - it's incredibly impractical and expensive. Even Nolan and McQuarrie shoot parts of their film on 35mm or digital and then their large scenes on 70mm IMAX. Because of the advanced special effects and the intense production it would have been easier for them to shoot on 35mm, turn the source film into a digital master file, and then essentially equip it for IMAX compatibility. This is why it's not being marketed as 70mm IMAX showings--because it wasn't shot on 70mm. It's like 4K gaming--there's checkerboarding 4K, which is essentially the idea of upgrading an image by altering pixels, increasing the resolution, and native 4K, which is hardcoding the 4K resolution directly into the assets. It's why Apocalypse Now: Final Cut was able to be upgraded to IMAX. The film was shot on 35mm with some sequences on 16mm, which were both then resized to a 70mm format. The crew that worked on Final Cut were able to use the original 70mm reel and turn it into an IMAX-compatible film reel. It's the same exact reason why 2001: A Space Odyssey still looks so damn good. Because film is a physical medium that you are exposing the light of the scene onto, you are essentially granted an almost unlimited (at least incredibly high) resolution. When dealing with a digital file, you are heavily limited because you're shooting on a max resolution that will basically be outdated in just a few years. Criterion's remasters of 50-year-old films look better than most films that came out ten years ago because they were able to take the original 35mm film reels and transfer them into a 4K video file. I see a lot of comments on the IMAX trailers saying "hurr durr why not imax aspect ratio" and there's two precise reasons: one, as listed above, most films are not shot natively on 70mm IMAX, and are instead upgraded from 35mm film. The second reason is that there's something in film called letterboxing. 35mm film is 1.5:1 and 70mm is 2.2:1. Because these are not always the most desirable ratios (1.5 is a terrible choice when you want to get dramatic, pulse-pounding action), they use a process called letterboxing which is essentially just a fancy name for changing the aspect ratio of the film. Given what I can find on IMDB, it appears that Ad Astra was NOT shot on a 70mm IMAX camera, but rather a 35mm Arri camera that was then letterboxed from 2.2:1 to 2.39:1.

@@ewan.cartwright The two of you doesn't seem to understand the problem. The movie has a 2.35:1/2.39:1 aspect ratio yet the trailer was rendered in 16:9 which means that the black bars on the top and bottom are hard coded, so even us, ultrawide (21:9), or super ultrawide (32:9) monitor users can't watch the video in full screen, and we'll actually see black bars not just on the top and bottom, but on each sides as well.

Hi, I'm from GUATEMALA. We have an IMAX cinema located in Pradera Concepción. I just saw Ad Astra and Captain Marvel a few months ago and I have a problem with the facilities there. The projection is not right. There are some lines on the screen, it seems that it is not a real IMAX! I wonder if it is possible that you can give them some kind of maintenance here, because it looks bad. Please answer my question. Sorry for my English

So... Correct me if I'm wrong. But that's a space elevator in the trailer right? Seems a bit short in height (as far as I understand, that looks like low earth orbit region, and the space elevators I've read about are supposed to be reaching geostationary orbit regions? That's so they can anchor the line on stationary sites) but I'm amazed that movies have taken this long to play around with these things.

I've only seen the trailers and all of them (I think) refused to show how far down the ladder went, so I just assumed it was a Space Elevator. :) Me wanting movies with space elevators probably played a big part in my misunderstanding... I really want to see space elevators explored in hollywood movies... Space Elevator. :D

Apart from issues with cold welding (that I only have faint clue about) i see very few issues with guns in space in general. I guess as long as the propellant issue is dealt with, the fact that there is no atmosphere to push against would make the bullets would be even faster than on earth and the lowered gravity would help with accuracy since the projectile would fly straighter and longer.

We have the older space version of Top Gun but wont do well. Pitt is no way near Cruise who blew the screen with that movie. He never was in the first place. Its a big gamble at his age, minimum acting ability & a very weak onn screen presence as comapred to the likes of Cruise / DiCaprio & Depp. Cruise demanded attention every time he came.
