Roundtables are back! Tune in Monday, May 23rd for the premiere of The Hollywood Reporter’s 2016 Emmy Roundtable season, and every day after for new Roundtable videos. Who do you want to see on this season’s Roundtables? Tell us in the comments below!
THR's executive director Matthew Belloni talks comedy, character, and corruption in the Oscar nominated film, 'The Big Short', with writer Michael Lewis and director Adam McKay as well as three of the film's stars: Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, and Christian Bale.
“You’re rooting for these guys. They’re like us. They’re outsiders." Adam McKay explains why he was originally drawn to adapt Michael Lewis' book for the big screen.
"The people that take the short position in wall street, they don't look healthy. It actually takes a toll on you because you're betting against the hope of the future. It's a really, hard uncomfortable position to be against the mainstream," 'The Big Short' director and co-screenwriter Adam McKay says on The Hollywood Reporter In Focus. McKay also explains how Dr. Michael Burry, portrayed in the film by Christian Bale, developed health problems which dissipated after he changed positions.

So true! I was literally shaking during the final act, knowing this *actually happened* in my lifetime. The fundamental flaws of human nature will always bite back when we exchange long term stability for short term profit. I don't believe people didn't know what was happening, but they *chose* not to listen to the indicators because it was convenient at the time. I say this with the privilege of hindsight, but my god...how did we f*#k this up so bad?

Of course Christian Bale is. Although in my opinion, Steve Carell isn't really that attractive.

olivesaregreat I find all three attractive but in different ways. Steve for laughs. Christian for a crazy night out. Ryan for a hot time in bed.

Amazing Supergirl Don't get me wrong, I totally respect that opinion but somehow, Ryan feels more like the crazy night out guy to me while Christian looks like he's hiding an inner beast so I'd personally associate him with the hot time in bed.

Working in the financial industry in Canada I read the big short and was enthralled with it. Knowing and understanding the verbiage made it simpler for myself to understand. The movie was very well done. I thought it made it reasonably easy to understand for the general public. The U.S. is the wild Wild West when it comes to regulations in the financial industry. There is also not enough safety valves in place today in the U.S. in regards to protecting pension plans and the general public’s financial well being. Too much money controlling the levers of power.

Holy shit. His comment about New Orleans is spot on. Born and raised and while I love cities with their own unique identities, like Chicago or New York, New Orleans is a different beast. The way of life and attitude is so vastly different from anywhere else I've ever been. Some good and some bad, but totally different.

^yeah, he looks like that because he in constant confusion of how he became an actor. One day he just walked onto a movie set. Then a makeup artist thought he was an actor and ushered him into makeup and then in front of the cameras. He's had that look ever since.

This movie is terrific, I didn't think I'd understand it on the first viewing, but the actors and Adam McKay did such a grand job executing it. I can say the very same thing for the book when I began the first chapter I was convinced I wouldn't digest anything properly. But Michael Lewis' way of explaining Credit Default Swaps, Collateralized Debt Obligations and blah blah blah (you get the picture), was really very good. There were many instances where I had to read things 3 or 4 times but nevertheless, the book proved just as engaging, sad and blood-boiling.
