Electric vehicles (EVs) have been widely hailed as a key part of the transition to green energy, but are they helping as much as we think they are? Adam Rozencwajg of Goehring & Rozencwajg weighs in, sharing his thoughts on EV energy efficiency and CO2 savings.
"When we put it all together, there was really very little doubt in our minds that the total energy - we're talking cradle to grave - of an EV was far greater than an internal combustion engine. And I think that's ultimately why we're starting to see these EVs begin to pile up on lots, that's why we're ultimately continuing to see subsidies be necessary in order to incentivize people to switch to EVs," he said.

Excellent discussion with sane analysis from Rozencwajj .. also very sobering realities that both fortunately and unfortunately elude to the consequences of 'natural' experiments bereft of solid science. Charlotte Mcleod .. if your firm has not already interviewed Doomberg (the now famous green chicken), might want to consider. Their team is at the forefront along with Adam's firm in a line of important truth in science tellers that are necessary to help reshape our global energy issues debates ! Very good interviewing here ...

This is very helpful to put efficiency around the ICE vs EV question. I'm going to have my greenie grandsons view and discuss with me. This will help balance the greenwashing they are subject to in middle school.

Talk with him about peak oil as well. Please be aware conventional oil production has stopped growing in 2005, and only the fracking wonder helped to meet the rising demand. And if you look at total numbers (conventional and non-conventional oil), peak production was in 2018 (so far). It has not resumed since the COVID depression. By the way, today we consume 30 billion barrel oil per year, but only find new oil fields for replentish about 3 billion barrel per year. With what kind of fuel do you want to fill up your ICE car in 20 years?

I wonder how quickly engineers and chemists will find a way to produce batteries without the need of cooking away large amounts of water away into vapour.

21:40 _"Do we see a battery breakthrough on the horizon?"_ What's with Sodium based batteries? NaCl is widely available, whereas Lithium is much scarcier to equip the global fleet of 1.2 billion passenger cars with a mobile battery storage system.

As a city dweller EVs do provide less toxic emissions. I live .9 km from a major highway to the downtown business center.

Let’s not forget where your charging current came from and the toxic emissions the power provider produces. Rare examples of home rooftop PV installations in sunny areas can be ignored for comparison purposes.

One little known fact about EVs (at least Tesla). They do not have a neutral gear. If there is a road situation, you need a dolly to lift up the rear end as the rear wheels so not roll.

adam didn't account for the swamp gas from flooded valley to create the hydro dam. Swamp gas, CO, CH4, H2S are super GHG, that get emitted daily for decades until all the organic matters in the flooded valley decomposed

There is nothing like math. Incontrovertible reasoned proof that the EV "revolution" is good for a few who profit from pereptuating the efficiency myth of electric vehicles.
