You can see that these two spent a lot of time together and that they are true professionals. Although they have two different ways to get the paneling done, they know that they can rely on each other to get it done on time. The builds are super valuable. Watching them I am almost transported back in time. And watching them both at ILM working on a movie prop!

The Vac-U-Form machine was made by Ron Charles & Associates (RC Vac-U-Form) in Wilmette, Illinois (Chicago area), circa 1988 to 1991. I recently inherited the 8 x 11 size machine from my old employer, a St. Louis area professional model shop that just closed. That machine was $450 new in January 1990.

@@liemyip159 Oh I intend to. I used it all the time when I was working, and find uses for it still. I was quite lucky to get it when the old shop closed, as the machine is so hard to find on the used equipment market.

The 'Deluxe' model allowed for use of 9" x 12" sheet stock; the 'Deluxe XL' was made for 12" x 18" sheet stock, and the 'Supra Deluxe' used 16" x 24".

This is so inspiring! I did not realize one can use a 3d print base and just add plasticard for paneling! I work at a packaging making plant and I can take scrap home. PVC, PET, PETG, HIPS and others of varying thicknesses. Thank you, Adam and the rest of the Tested crew for showing me a new way to make models!

I love love LOVE that Adam is excited to learn/try salt chipping. I am in total awe of their focus and ease and familiarity with the entire visualization/build/ paint process. The uber-nerd conversation about vinyl masks and friskets was squeeing-flapping-tastic! ILM was my childhood dream job. Today, I just build for me and for fun.

I am always amazed when you all talk about a technique I have been using for a long time for my WWII models and I just assume you would know it. The Salt weathering has been a staple of WWII and historical models for a long time. I am glad to see you discover something I just assumed you knew.

I absolutely and totally agree on all aspects of this. In Sweden, children are actively encouraged to take up the arts at school, especially music. When I was in secondary school (year 7), here in Australia, most schools had music classes, but only a few, like mine, had musical instruments for us to learn. I have always thought that it is a shame that art has always had to take a back seat to Math, Science and English. They should be treated equally from the time a kid enters school until the day they leave.

This is absolutely my favourite type of tested video. I could watch Adam and Fon making space ships till the cows come home. Also as a messy noob of an airbrush user it was very heart-warming to see Fon, an undisputed master with spilt paint all down his airbrush hand!

Fructose medium hair spray in a spritz bottle sprayed over an area then sprinkle the crushed rock salt on that. The hair spray makes it easier to work with. using water with salt can leach the salt into the paint or form a crust, which can be useful for certain finishes. The hair spray gives a cleaner finish.

I’ve 3D printed a negative vaccume forming mold in ABS complete with vent lines, bolt off undercuts, and a tube cooling passage for compressed air to get the extra detail and surface greebles. The porous qualities of FDM make it a fantastic vaccume forming mold process. FYI, don’t use PLA for this, the hot plastic sheet will destroy the mold details almost instantly. Use ABS or PETG to get repeated parts

Its so much fun to watch Adam and Fon "nerd out" on these builds. It's weirdly therapuetic to watch two people, who clearly like each other, working on something they are passionate about. Just goes to show, you can make the 13 year old grow old, but you can't always make them grow up. Nice work fellas. Glad to see some of the "old skool kool" for movie model making is still around.

My now two years ago pre-order collector's edition arrived yesterday and boy did it not disappoint. The Khar-Kushan mother ship model which as internal LEDs is huge, and absolutely gorgeous. I'm framing the lithograph picture that came with it.

I got some of the best advice from Fon about 13 years ago. He told me in a video call about all the different kinds of creative art skills I wanted to do and to make props is to be innovative and a production company! Not just a studio. An listen to what the project is saying to you. Thank you, Fon! You can do the same paint trick with a spray bottle, water drops, sand, and sugar! I found a net trick with fine window screens. Lay a piece over the top of your foam or model paint over it then pull the screen off and it will give a cool 3d effect to your work!

Such a fun and informative build. Thank you for taking us on this journey. I remember my buddy in model railroading using the salt technique to weather bridges, and leaving some salt under the rust coat gave such a neat texture that paint alone just wouldn't convey.

Homeworld designs are like the perfect synthesis of Chris Foss-style coloration and patterning with Star Wars-style functional-feeling mechanical design. Seeing that being built and them gushing about panel notches and putting little details in the gaps is great. I do 3D models and all this stuff makes me go "Yes! I know! These people speak my language!"

Getting to paint it nice then add the weathering reminded me of how fine-scale models in 80s and 90s gave me that sense of excitement and dread of screwing it up. And yes shiny can be too shiny, but also the model paints back then would look too uniform and matte/dull for actual rust. My secret was to use actual rust mixed with matte clear enamel or lacquer been so long I forgot which. Anyways in the basement was a glass jar with vinegar, salt and some scrap metal or even crushed tin cans. Once in awhile I'd remove any metal left then slowly drain the jar, refill it with water and let sit overnight to "rinse" the fine rust particles and next day slowly drain most of the water then let it sit to dry. The what was left was a rust cake that easily crumbled into super fine powder. Cost was a few pennies and some time, results on models... priceless. ;)

Adam discovering salt chipping that wargamers have used for ages is so serendipitous full circle considering how many techniques and tools I take away from these videos. Ive always seen it done by spraying hairspray on the model for the salt to adhere to and then a damp toothbrush to knock away the salt and peel up some hairspray. Then a clear coat to lock down your work. But that was always done with kosher salt. The crushed rock salt for more variety is a great idea Im gonna take

One thing I have loved about every single Homeworld game, including 3, now, is how cohesive the design language is for the ships. You’re absolutely right, the designs are unique enough that they aren’t obviously derivative of other sci-fi properties. This interceptor, yes, it has four winglets, but it is very clearly not an X-Wing. What’s more, each of these ships have consistent design with the other ones built by the same faction. This interceptor has a similar profile to the Scout but it’s more purpose-built, this is a pure fighter and you can tell. Likewise, the fleet bomber is recognizably Hiigaran but has quite a different, broader profile owing to the role it fills. You can tell at a glance who built every ship in Homeworld, and how different groups approach similar engineering challenges. Even in the original game, where polygon counts were limited, they did a great job distinguishing between factions. Kushan were more rectamgular, Taiidan more triangular, with Kadeshi and Bentusi ships being the curviest designs, befitting their more mysterious, alien vibes. Can you tell I love Homeworld?

I love seeing the old schoolers do what they do. What an entertaining video. This is always what I wanted to see on movie magic back when I was a kid. I make vehicles and stuff in zbrush for an action figure line and this is basically how I do panels. It has to be simplified but same concept.

I'm really suprised that with the decades of combined experience building models that you two have, that you've never heard of/or even used the "salt chipping" technique. Armour modelers in particular have been using it for at least 5 years. In any event, that is a great looking model. I love how it turned out. 👍👍👍👍 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Many of the paint manufacturers like Tamiya, Mr Colour and AK have actual chipping fluids to accomplish the same visual.

The salt trick that Fon describes is something that I learned from Warhammer 40K. Cool to think that there's so much cross-over from what you can learn hobbying and what can be used by professionals.

I once experimented with salt weathering. I was making a diorama of an old man reactivating a barn-find Bren gun carrier. It's good for bottom edges of car bodies, where rust bubbles start.

This, the time you built battle star galactica stuff with Aaron Douglas and the starfield stuff has been some of the best stuff you have done. Not even because its video game stuff, its just something about the process and the sheer weight of knowledge on display. Seeing you get immersed into something like that is fantastic particularly when you get to do it with friends. It also feels super cozy, wish I could do this stuff for a living. The other work you do is obviously fantastic too, we are talking "what flavor of ice cream do you like?" like sure I have a preference but its still all ice cream!

That salt technique for paint chips is something ive done forever for scale models, i use hairspray instead of just water, it helps the salt stick better

So this is really cool. But it also shows the difference between digital-first 3D artists vs prop/real-world first 3d artists. They defaulted to ok we should create the paneling on top using styrene sheets and then vacuum form it. Whereas a digital-first artist like myself, it take seconds to convert normal to displacement and then use that to recreate the paneling before 3D printing. It really opens up my eyes to how different people approach the problem.

Indeed! And often the best results come from combining approaches. That was something I was noticing particularly in the early days of 3D-print modeling; people would be spending lots of effort trying to deal with things that could be easily addressed with a little "real-world-first" modeling. (Or worse, not addressing them at all.) And now there are things I notice where it's the opposite; why spend hours doing something that a laser cutter or 3D printer could do in minutes?

The Homeworld aesthetic was heavily inspired since the first game by the paintings and designs of Chris Foss. The 3D modelling people really did a great job with each of the games.

My best purchase so far has been a fancap airbrush. Iwata has the HP-TH which is prohibitively expensive, but Mr Hobby has a similar model for much much much cheaper. I mention it because it paints these bigger models like a dream, especially for big gloss coats. And plus one to not liking water borne acrylics, the hotter the paint the better it flows and behaves IMO

I use a PS-290 from GSI Creos / Mr Hobby for my priming, base coating and varnish application. It's awesome. Behaves more like a baby spray gun than an airbrush.
