Adam is joined in the shop by the cosplay duo of Cowbutt Crunchies cosplay, incredible artists and costume designers who we've admired for years. Regan and Kelley show Adam some of their Studio Ghibli-inspired cosplay and demonstrate how they craft and style extreme wigs that are in and of themselves pieces of art!

Groege Carlin, in a chapter in one of his books called "words that aren't words but should be", or something like that, he includes "pocketry". I was never sure if this is a better word to describe a garments assortment of pockets, or the contents of pockets, but "Wiggetry" seems like it could be a similar word, alongside "wiggage".

Honestly, the most inspiring part for me was when she said one of her first wigs was made 7 or so years ago. In convention time, thats not long at all to go from complete beginner to crazy expert. Obviously, the number of wigs made in that time window is probably fairly large, but knowing that I could achieve similar results in a reasonable amount of time is quite motivating. I have also been running across other creators of various mediums saying they became really good in 5-8 years time and their year 2 stuff still really holds up. It reminds me that the stuff I want to achieve is totally possible without needing to devote 20 years to it before hitting my stride.

@@M_Lopez_3D_Artist Yep. Which is why I made the aside that the number she made in that time was probably fairly large. The inspiration is mostly fuel to motivate myself and others to put in that time instead of getting that "I'll never be great" feeling and putting down the craft. Personally iv been working on leathercraft and other cosplay things. Iv managed to make a hat and a few other small items and just need to keep the motivation going.

Every cosplayer starts somewhere! None of them start off great at it, they get better just by sucking at first and continuing to do it anyway. But of course, I know the feeling of something being intimidating and feeling overwhelming and out of reach. But it really does just help to take the plunge and embrace the fact that you might suck at first and that's fine - because then you're actually _doing_ it, and you'll learn so much about how to get better. Mistakes just mean you learn how to do the correct thing faster. And absolutely no one skips that part of the learning process, even really skilled and experienced cosplayers

Easy place to start is with cardboard. It's cheap, recyclable, and everyone love some cardboard armor. There's tons of KZfaq vids and free patterns to follow out there. I made a whole stormtrooper helmet out of cardboard. Nobody starts at their level. Talent is like the last 1% of genius. Hard work, practice, and a bunch of mistakes and you can get to their level.

I am right there with you, I just bought some tools and EVA foam yesterday and am just jumping in to it. I expect a lot of failures, so I will just keep doing until I learn all the lessons I need to learn to have something con worthy. I think being ready to fail and not being worried by it is the first real step. Do, fail, learn, and improve for the next one. Practising and learning at the start is far more important than it being perfect. Good luck and happy cosplaying!

They make a great point that wigs don't have to be solely hair. I made Shiva from FFX and her massive hair falls give cosplayers NO END of trouble, between the amount of hair needed, potential weight issues, etc. I never liked any of the hair fiber versions I saw, so I made them out of tubes of streaky velvet with all the bands just sewn onto the fabric, then lightly stuffed with sparse batting. My biggest, gnarliest wig is ZERO maintenance and will never have a hair out of place. >:3

She really has to emphasize the heat not glue thing because starting out in the 2010s a lot of the wig styling advice for beginners was stuff like wigs are not human hair so you can use insane amounts of glue instead of hair spray for a stronger hold. I ended up getting a lot of pre-styled wigs after my first few attempts but this makes me want to give wig styling another try.

@elfteiroh
@elfteiroh Жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t that limit your head movement? “Has flexibility” and “provide support” is usually anathema to each other… :X Of course, some design would… well, “by design” restrict your head anyway so yeah. XD
@Sairin13
@Sairin13 Жыл бұрын
@@elfteiroh limit yeah, but not completely restrict, of course I'm only doing this in my head but I think it could work for making the whole thing comfortable and stylish, though the real trick would be getting it to move correctly. I just don't know how you could make it realistic and have it taking the weight at the same time. But for something elaborate like the ones these girls are wearing it might be useful. I don't know, but it's fun to think about. Imagine if voluminous hair looked like it draped over the shoulders, but secretly it hid some kind of shoulder mounted harness so that the cosplayer only had to deal with the weight of part of all of that hair

those ladies are seriously impressive. their work could easily be on display at a high fashion runway event in paris or milan the same as it is at a convention hall. incredibly talented craftswomen

I do hairstyles on my props. I had to learn a lot the hard way. But I really loved the heat trick to lock it in, thanks! I looked for years for bug hairstyle videos for wigs or hair and this just came along and filled in the gaps of my knowledge Thank you,!

When they talk about 3d printed foam heads @11:24 that match the shape of an individual, it reminded me of the sewing dress forms (mannequin) that Bernadette Banner talked about that take your measurements and asymmetries and gives you an accurate model of your body type. BB has a curvature in her spine and her dress form is made just like her.

He asked about a wig that was too heavy, and I immediately thought of how heavy my Rose Quartz wig is, and I literally screamed "SAME!!" when she started talking about her own Rose Quartz wig! 😂🥰
