Adam Savage’s Tested

Hang out with Adam in the shop as he disassembles and restores a beautiful wooden chair that he found just around the corner from the cave. With parts sanded, a new set of casters, and a fresh coat of tung oil, this chair will find new life in Adam's office. Keep an eye out for a guest appearance by his dog Maggie!

interesting direction to take a ODB/ ODR (one day restore). its a nice look at another way of telling a story. however, i miss the old ones where adam would talk to us through the builds. kinda reminded me of hanging out in my grandpas shop listening to his stories lol. thats being said the chair looks amazing good to see someone take the time to restore something that still had some life left in it.

@@tested the point is that this video doesn’t feel like a one day build. The confusing intro followed by one giant time lapse really was disappointing. I agree my favorite videos were the covid lockdown vids where Adam was by himself talking us thru a build. This just doesn’t feel the same at all.

@@dgornowicz8417 yeah when this video started I thought it was a live one day build and I had caught the end of it or something and I tried to rewind it. And then it just turned into a time lapse video with some acoustic guitar. Not what I expected at all. If you can’t have the audio that was recorded becuase Adam was listening to licensed music I understand but that would have been preferable. Also I would have liked this to be filmed at Normal speed. Those are just my initial reaction.

Some years back I worked at a courthouse and sat on one of these chairs. One of the casters broke out of a leg and rather than fixing it, the maintenance man hauled it out to the dumpster. Somehow it ended up in my house ... I glued the caster back in and it has sat in my office ever since. I love the look and feel of it but it isn't something I can sit in very long. Despite the sculpted seat, it hurts to sit on it for very long. (This is a "I'm too fat." issue.) Great to see that you have one of your own and rebuilt it without removing its charm.

Great build other than the finish. Tung oil applied that thick will never truly dry. The surface dries but the rest doesn't. If for any reason that chair gets very warm in the future anything that contacts if for a time will leave it's imprint on the finish. Tung oil must be applied very thin and dried well before adding the next coat. When the last coat is applied as an example a gunstock only needs one or two drops to completely cover the stock. The finish is amazing in terms of beauty and durability if applied correctly. Great Find Adam, nice job. For intricate work I use single strength broken glass to scrap off the old finish, requires only a light wisp of fine sanding.

This by far is one of the best videos speaking to the fact of the throw away society's waste, without saying really anything. Those of us who see these discarded gems in the rough and then take the time to save them for repurposing are saving a little piece of a craftsman's history. I have several pieces of wood furniture in my house that were dumpster finds or end of someone's driveway. I repurpose oak and maple heavy duty pallets for creating many things to sell and use. Stuff that is surplus for me and sometimes that I fix, I put back out for the free pile for the next guy to enjoy. Nice work on the chair Adam. You should sponsor a dumpster find restoration challenge and offer up one of your desirable hammers or tools as a prize.

Great Find & restore! My grandfather had a chair like that in storage at his house. The center post was a large steel screw to adjust the height. He loved it & said it was the most comfortable office chair he had used. I remember using it for a week & hating it. It was heavy to move, constantly squeaked & hurt my butt & you would get grease on your pants from the screw. But I was young back then & it was not the right size for me.

I am literally working on a chair very much like this one today. I am just replacing the wheels with modern rubber ones that don't scratch my hardwood floors. Problem I have is the shafts and sleeves for the old wheels are like 5mm and the new shafts are 6mm. I'm in the process of widening the hole in the bottom of the chair for the new steel sleeves, and cutting a smaller aluminum sleeve bushing to go inside of that to ensure a good fit for the new shafts. That are also shorter than the original shafts. Fun.

They're so small but if you use a lot you'll buy a lot but even if you don't that just means the ones you do get for gifts or whatever last a really, really long time. Every girl I've ever known has makeup scattered all over their room, even the tomboys that never seem to wear it. I ended up getting an A in my shop class and didn't have to do any of those stupid projects like building a birdhouse in shop. I restored a chair almost just like this, the one I did had arms on it. It was from an over 100 year old post office in Findlay OH that is still in use. It had some random screws and wood patches from years of use. Someone too heavy for it sat in it and snapped the chair off of the support post and they were going to throw it away. I took it and put it all back together, cleaned it and as far as I know, is still in the office being displayed. The neat part was that it was a swivel chair and had a big marble on top of the feet post (in a round indent) and the chair pretty much slipped over the top of the post to hold it all together. I’m gonna have to check in on that chair and see if it’s still around.

Adam, I've had a set of Klein lineman's pliers/cutters for several years. They have never failed to cut whatever needs cut'n. No bending or notching. With the long handles, the mechanical advantage is mine not the wire's. The plier part has an awesome grip. No slippage. Very sharply cut teeth with a ferrule crimper too. Can't be beat. For nearly $60 on the Amacazon, it's a tough swallow, but I'll only ever need the one. Same for my Fluke meter. Buy cheap and you'll buy forever. Buy quality and buy once. It's nice to grow up and have real tools where it counts.

Some narration about repairing the center post and swivel block would have been helpful. The high speed sanding was a nice idea. Love the old chair.

Perfect mood and style for the piece. Very evocative of an imagined history of a chair ✨ Thanks for the work and the whimsy 🙌🏼💚

This looks near identical to a chair we inherited from a relative who worked for the army during WWII- it was his office chair in DC, and he brought it home when he retired. No idea how widespread this design was outside the army, but it's possible this chair was also once an army desk chair. 80 years on and, aside from a squeak, ours still works great!

When was this style chair built? My guest would be some time 1880 to 1950. (But more likely the earlier side of that range.)

I really love the serendipity of the find. They don't make um like that anymore. Also the ASMR format really works for me and probably gives Adam a chance to enjoy the process without providing comments. Some great tacit knowledge being transmitted!

Very relaxing video. Wouldn't have minded a little commentary here and there as Adams' enthusiasm is always an energiser. I Was also wondering where I had seen that chair in my childhood 50+ years ago in New Zealand, I'm guessing in black and white, in the sheriffs office on "The Andy Griffith Show", or on "Ironsides" Law firm office or even in the Tower on "12 o'clock High" - probably all of the above and more.

I love chairs like that. I'd really like to find one like that or a military desk chair with the threaded rod height adjustment. I'm a large guy and those stupid cheap ass pneumatic adjusters fail. I modded my current chair by drilling a hole through that and shoving in a hardened hex key to keep it from ever dropping down. Some sort of modern pinned system like this would be so much more reliable and fewer parts as well.

That is a beautiful restoration. That chair is something that would most likely get scraped and possibly get tossed into a burn pile. But you gave it a new lease on life. Love it.

I’m thankful for all the topics Adam has introduced me to. Often I get to dive deeply into the topic or craft and see the modern day masters at work. _AT Restorations_ and _Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration_ come to mind for this work. There are so many details, tips and philosophies of work and construction one can pick up.

I have noticed that there is one (De) Merit badge you don't have available. Taking something apart and putting it back together with parts left over. That you have no idea what there for.
