Adam Savage's talk at Maker Faire Bay Area 2012. Adam tells a great story about his Indiana Jones hat, how he got started building his obsessions, and why makers should embrace the things that they have no choice but to make.

This man is truly amazing. He is quite the inspiration for makers everywhere, young and old. He has inspired me to convert my basement into a fully loaded wood shop and I have been crafting things ever since. It is truly a pleasure to be alive when the makers, artists, hobbyists and inventors are fighting back.

I love this speech. It brings me to tears to hear him be so passionate about what makes creators passionate. It makes me want to become better at my craft; makes me want to push myself harder to learn new things and then share those things others. Most of all it makes me happy to know that there are so many other people with the same passion.

Adam says everything its taken me years to realize, but he missed something, he forgot to say that even if you dont finish what your trying to make, you have solved problems in the process that will snowball your skills to the point where things basically make themselvs at your own hand. Don't let yourself feel a lack of accomplishment for not finishing what your trying to make. Thanks Adam for telling the world.

Adam Savage is a hero to me. Because I stumbled upon and watched this I have gained a second wind to finish the DeadSpace Ninja hybrid armor I designed and Scorpion Machine Pistol prop I had started and gave up on. Thank you Adam Savage for inspiring me once again. I think I might even create a channel of my creations just to show them off to the world and help other make stuff as well! :)

I like how you said push yourself past those moments when the project is kicking you I hate my teachers for one thing which is trying to inform me how hard how expensive and time consuming something is and your right the desire to have something not always for a purpose but to make and have propels you forward and shapes you. I want to be that sort of person that type of people isn't popular which makes me feel that future is going to not be fun and rewarding so when people MAKE they make the future a good future ( you are amazing )

Whenever someone takes on the task of making something they want they are more apt to learn something. It has always been the case with me, I will start on a project and some time into it I realize that I don't know how to do the next step, so I learn how. I probably wouldn't have learned half of what I know if I had not taken on the task in the first place so I'm with Adam on this. We Americans really need to get back to making things.

I go to a STEM school with a fabrication lab. Our first material is foam board and I love making things. I have made so many objects and things out of acrylic with a laser cutter and various sizes of CNC machines. I already know that the thing I’m going to miss the most when I go to college, is an endless supply of foam board. I couldn’t go through all of it if I tried.

I wish I had this kind of enthusiasm, for a time I did, but then I asked myself why? Why exactly do I want to learn more, and all I could think was:"Just because", while that was sufficient, it just isn't anymore. If we are really honest with ourselves, any endeavor which is not related to survival is just frivolous, in the end it won't matter, so why expand the energy? Nothing anything, anyone ever invented, discovered, made truly matters, the universe will keep on going without any of it.

In response to kids making things from "pop culture" vs "new" things, kids have to start somewhere. For example, a young guitarist will start playing well known rock songs before they start creating their own music. Part of the learning process is imitating the things you admire. Once you develop those basic skills, you then are able to apply them to creating brand new things. It's REALLY, REALLY HARD to do that right off the bat.

For a long time, I thought I was one of the last of a dying breed of men: those that can make things from virtually nothing, with only their hands, their tools, and their wits to use. Since the Maker movement has started taking off, I've felt like I'm right on the launchpad of a huge cultural shift, taking off and flying right in the face of conventional/corporate 'wisdom', right in the midst of an economic downturn. I'm so thankful for having guys like Adam Savage in our corner!

Yeah, I know all that man. But what happens is that you get married, have kids and you really have to leave your dreams behind, you are responsible for a life after all. After a while your enthusiasm is just gone for good, all you can think of is this job of raising a kid, Yeah, that one song for the contest I made about 6 months ago, when I thought I "had it back", but hell if I can come up with anything else, I'm just too tired all the time, and besides I was never THAT good to begin with

I'm from India ...our temples are one of the most creative things...we even have a temple full of sex positions. Religion for us is the source of knowledge and wisdom..It's meaning is kind of different your place to mine. It's society that stifles or nourishes creativity and free thinking, not religion It's just a tool..like the rest of ideologies...Davinci and Micheal Angelo were supported by church. We can't be sure they were not praying if they got stuck at someplace working on some piece :)

Yep, it is :) It sounds like you're going through a rough patch or stuck in a rut? Sometimes all you need is a change in your surrounds to get you going again. Learn a new skill, start a new hobby, go back to school. From your KZfaq channel you look to be a pretty respectable guitarist. Learn another instrument! You could look at this way - if nothing really matters in the end then the consequences of failure don't matter! Life isn't about outcomes, it's the journey that matters.
