For Adam, 18:28 that's the speed and direction adjust. Rotate it the desired position so the motor turns in the right direction. It's the same mechanism found in common garden variety impact drills with rotating speed collars and you've seen the very same mechanism at play in HTR's video titled "Why Did They Stop Making These? [Restoration]" just in a different format. I suspect that motor was for a post drill in its previous life, it's very much overkill and a waste (of a good motor) for a hacksaw which can only rotate one way only because they're designed to cut on pull, slip on push. I highly recommend swapping that motor for a same power and speed ratio (perhaps even slower for modern cheaper made saw blades) and using it for something more appropriate for its station.

I mean you changed the logo plate cause you didn't like how it looked. Well maybe if your weren't to busy looking at only it you would have seen the big arrow on the wheel indicating its intended direction of spin. Yet you totally ignore it and just go "Oh this cuts on the push." And still not realize it was spinning in the wrong direction. Cool little machine though.

Love the old Craftsman saw on the factory stand. That thing will outlive us all. So happy to see you go with a vintage tool! And yes, those stands went under multiple Craftsman power tools of that era. A lot more stable than they first appear. And one more edit - I love, love, love that you just did a cleanup on this. So many people tear a tool apart to "restore" it and it just ends up in a box as a pile of parts that gets scrapped one day. Great lesson hiding in plain sight. --> For the motor running the wrong way, the adjustment under the acrylic cover can be used to reverse the motor. Easy peasy.

Love those reupholster hammers.. i completely rehabbed an old rusted locker stack (so staff could protect their belongings while at work)… learning about metal and how it bends in “waves” was so informative.. it’s also counterintuitive because to straighten the frame requires focus on areas that aren’t the actual dents.. mad props to the metal workers, auto body repair, and the mechanics who really keep our country literally moving … keep up the amazing work.. building is challenging and a really positive outlet for learning and redirecting energy for inquisitive minds

If you've never been introduced to it (I assume you have but just in case) they make loctite in a glue stick style applicator, and it is a game changer. With the liquid lock tight I always end up getting it everywhere, and the glue stick allows you to put just the right amount

Every time I watch a build or a tool presentation or a shop tour, it is an affirmation of my own shop methods. Horizontal surfaces to cover? Check! Large collection of tools for a seemingly small project? Check! Every tape measure in the house brought out? Check! Putting away all the toys the project is done? CHECK! And despite Adam's prodigious knowledge and experience, he still comes across as an "Everyman Maker". Thank you very much for speaking plain, normal-person English to those of us who may struggle with insider terms and phrases. Please, keep doing what you're doing.

We call them pump pliers. With the preheat solder ad a touch of self cleaning flux for old stuff it’s usually due to the oxidation of the copper

that heat gun looks like a hot air rework gun for soldering if anyone was wondering. you can do a lot with it, my favorite is lowering the air flow it puts out so it doesnt blow parts away

I had one of those red rags in a box in my car which had a rubber mallet in it. The handle of the mallet was stained red and it has forever looked like I've been bludgeoning people with it, lol. That was at least 25 years ago and I still have that mallet in my car.

the pair of needle nose pliers that Adam has at 13:50 , where he wrote his name on top of the brand are the hakko CHP PN-2016(rounded outside edge) or the CHP PN-2008(flat outside edge the one he has) , great pliers and good price. ill leave this here bc I didn't saw them on the tool list

My dad owns a mechanic shop and was similarly thrilled to find the OR rags, except for the fact that occasionally he would find one with a circle cut out of the middle. He stopped buying them after asking a family friend who was a nurse about it, and being informed that the only time that happens is when they're used for circumcisions 😂

Adam, those OR towels can be washed. Having worked with those towels for 30 years, I (and my coworkers) always took the excess home, otherwise they ended up in a landfill. The ones we took home were opened but not used. But I use them all around the house and wash them. They will give up the ghost, eventually, but not until you've gotten hours of use.

Adam, Did you ever think of picking about 25 of your most used tools and hang them within easy reach of your bench? For example, you were saying that many of your pliers come out for almost every job. They might qualify as part of the 25 tools that you would permanently place near your bench. I have started doing this and it has been a time saver for me. Among my 25 are ball peen hammer, needle nose pliers, side cutters, utility knife, 4-in-one screwdriver, hand drill, drill index, impact driver, vice grips, channel locks, and flashlight.

Adam, you can make a beeping circuit. It is just lead plugs and power with a beeper. The fun part would be making a box to hold it. Maybe a very small rectangle the size of a stick of gum but half an inch thick.

15:06 i just use the ones i discard. I'm almost never out of them for cleaning stuff. Good way to keep them from ending in the landpile too. Depending on variety used, they're good for various things too. I use different tootbrushes for different meals. If it's just a light meal, i'll just use a soft brush, no point in gouging the skin, thus i end up with a large variety of these things. No need to be squeamish about it having been in your mouth. You're cleaning way worse with it. :))

Off topic, sort of. Do you ever 3D print utilitarian things? We haven't seen a ton of 3D printed stuff from the cave, but I can only imagine you're printing cosplay and prop items nearly daily with the setup you have. I live and travel full time in an RV and have a 3D printer that I seldom use for anything other than functional stuff like wire management, switch covers, specialized electrical cases that are unique to X situation, etc. I find that buying these things are either costly or (more so) bulky. Like I need 3 cable hangers, but I have to buy a package of 20 and now I need to find a place to store 17 of these things in an already storage-prohibitive place. Anyway, just curious to know if you do any functional 3D prints.

My favorite way to make wire connections is to use non isolated crimps with marine grade heat shrink. What you end up with is a water tight connection with protection from vibration stress. Once you try it, you will never go back. This connection is also very small.

The solder connectors under performing on older wiring is likely a case of newer pre tined copper wire vs older plain copper wire.

I love imagining the different processes of the build that all of the tools are being used to accomplish as he goes through them as he puts them away. An interesting one day build type video. (Is there even a one day build of what he actually made? Does it matter? I personally don't mind either way.)

That bit about the connectors at ~17:00 was interesting. Anyone know more about the reason? I presume the old wires are all copper, so I'm wondering if it's an oxide buildup or if the metallurgy has changed over the years.

for me, the channellock #424 4.5inch pliers gets into places most of my other wrenches won't fit and handles up to 1/2 inch nut and bolts

17:05 would it be an idea to add extra flux when soldering old wires? Or would it make more sense at that point to just solder in the normal way then?

have you tried to burn off the gunk on old wires when using the solderless solder connections? a recent project had some old wires that wouldnt wick solder until I blasted it with a blow torch

The "speed adjust" is the brush adjustment for reversing the motor. You "can" adjust the speed but it is not the Intention, the motor has a designated rpm you should set it to and leave it alone.

My dad used the red shop rags but he never washed them. They were used until they were full of holes or too crusty and then thrown away.

Ah, you've highlighted 'the hierarchy of materials'. Use a softer material hammer than the material you're hammering to avoid marring. Plastic/hide (lead)first level, then copper/brass, then mild steel.

Would it make sense to stick a magnet under that filings catcher to magnetize it and get it to catch more? Or would it just make everything magnetized and difficult?
