Adam helps out his friend, writer Amber Ruffin, who recently tweeted a photo of her couch leg replaced with a can of kidney beans. To help give her couch some support, Adam replicates that can out of a piece of poplar wood, making use of some of his favorite woodworking tools in the shop. The replica looks pretty convincing!

What an awesome way to help a friend as well as a conversation piece! I did something similar a few years back, a friend of mine brought me a cabinet door from his man cave and wanted me to paint something/anything on it representing my artwork, I had that thing for like 2 years and he finally came to me and said “look if you’re not going to paint it, that’s fine, I need it back because I have a party coming up and it looks odd having one cabinet door missing” and that’s exactly when I realized what to paint on it. I painted the door to look as if it was still gone, ie shelves and stuff on the shelves, some paint drips from paint cans on a higher shelf etc. it turned out very nice and when he came to pick it up, his only response was “you &$*%”!

Spoiler: he wanted to make a wooden can of beans but he's a perfectionist so he machined a steel can, filled it with actual cooked beans, designed and printed the label to be perfectly identical to a store-bought one. It took twelve iterations and 27 days of work to get it just right, but it cost less than 500 dollars, so it's a win.

When I used to work in a welding machine repair shop, it was a "shut down the shop" moment any time you dropped a case screw. Each company has very specific screws for their metal covers and you don't have time to wait a week on new screws to come in. So we would all be crawling around on the floor in this nasty shop to find this tiny screw.

@TWX1138
@TWX1138 4 жыл бұрын
@@maxximumb My guess is no riving knife because it's up against a wall and the riving knife could make it harder to remove a piece without it getting caught up and possibly leading to a kickback. Those safety glasses will sort of keep chips sort away from his eyes but it should be a full proper face shield. Not a safety thing he found in a TV series that I think is sold more as a splash guard. that thing breaks loose and that shield just makes for more stuff penetrating his face.

here in the UK i've spent years specialising in education and teaching carpentry to student courses. i've been involved for about 5 years now. and MY teacher has been doing it for 30+ years. and hes always used japanese tools mixed with british techniques and projections, etc. the one adam is using in the video is specifically a dovetail saw, and its probably one of the most versatile. there are a multitude of shapes and their uses. the best thing about the japanese saws in my opinion is the grip. and the accuracy achieved with it. and when making my own tool boxes they're essential becuase the cut is so thin because the blade is so thin its almost a seemless cut every time. so i can make a fully enclosed box and cut the doors out and you'd never know. thats just one of their uses. anywho. they are a hidden gem in the world of tools and to think it changed a man's life so much that he used them for 30 years then proceeded to teach students to use them is a testiment to how good they are.
