Adam Savage’s Tested

Күн бұрын

We're at the final stretch of Adam's extensive build of two xEMU-inspired spacesuits that's consumed the latter of half of 2021. But with the suits sewn up and wired with electronics, it's time for a full pass of weathering to give them some real character and history. And to cap off this months-long project, Adam and G4's Kevin Pereira suit up in the completed spacesuits and test their mobility and dexterity in a friendly game of chess! The perfect opportunity for a photo shoot and lighting tests before heading off to make our short film!

I don’t remember where I saw this , (think it was Kaumicosplay) that used oil paint instead of acrylic paint for weathering, which gives you more time to weather you’re prop then acrylics.

Adam dressed his employer (who is constantly checking in on his progress) in the ‘roadworker orange’ suit while he got the white one, had “get back to work” blasting in his ears at regular intervals and made him pose with a litterpicker claw. This was definitely a power move and I’m so impressed. Edit: he also literally put a beacon on it to “keep an eye on the status of his workers”

I don't have as much an aversion to clean costumes as Adam does, but the weathering on the white suit, and the way it brought out the mesh in the beta-substitute cloth, REALLY sold it as something worn on the moon. Fantastic build, and it kind of makes me want to build one - other than a "contagion" hazmat suit, it's about the only thing I'd wear going to a con right now. I'm thinking there's a way to achieve some of the look (say, just the right jumpsuit, with strategic padding) that could be modded to attach to a backpack to get a similar effect without god-tier making skills.

This is absolutely amazing! I'm so jealous. One tip I've learned through Historical Reenactment and used through cosplay, for weight distribution on the body, split the weight of the suit between the shoulders and hips. You'll be so much more comfortable over extended periods of time when you do this and your back will thank you. It also helps you keep balanced better instead of being top heavy which improves mobility.

Hey Adam, I must admit I'm quite impressed with what you've done here! I work for a spacesuit company in New York and we make a lot of parts for the xEMU as well as some EVAs of our own. It's been a treat watching you struggle with a lot of the same issues we encounter. I originally clicked on this video to see how you tackled the visor blowing as it is a difficult process to get consistently right (which explains why you outsourced it), but I was captivated by your whole build. Also, I understand your struggle with the brief and we share a similar sentiment, though I must say you missed a critical part. There is a pivot point on each side of the brief that allows for a forward and backward motion (with stoppers) and allows for greater mobility. That being said, I feel it was the right move to skip over that part of the project. Again nice work, you've definitely given me some design points to think about. Thank you for sharing your work!

The suits turned out GREAT!!! Weathering techniques are always an interest to me when I make Halloween props. I didn't know the concept of using 3 colors, but intuitively when I weathered a fence for my display I used 3 colors... and to hear YOU say 3 colors was the magic was so confirming! The pounce bags is a new thing, and I like the technique of using your phone (camera) to check how it looks... Thanks for the tips!

At this point it hits me-- this series needed to be a book. I know, not the same coverage. But that would be a neat reference. Also-- I'll betcha nickle that there'll either be a super-duper space cloth material that makes the lunar dirt slide off OR there will be some kind of "car wash" thing that beats and ionized the dirt off. Somehow.
@RFC-3514
@RFC-3514 2 жыл бұрын
4:38 - You maybe "believe it's the case", but it's actually *exactly the other way around.* Using blue reduces the saturation without making it as dark (i.e., pulls it towards _grey,_ instead of pulling it towards dark orange, a.k.a. brown). So you are indeed totally wrong about that. But you're forgiven. ;-)
@adammcinnes5615
@adammcinnes5615 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking too, at least for where the paint goes over the fabric. I was wondering though, since they are contrasting colours, would it create the impression of the orange being more bold next to the blue paint? Or would the shift towards grey due to the blue paint on the orange make the orange appear less vibrant?
@adammcinnes5615
@adammcinnes5615 2 жыл бұрын
I just did a quick look at some examples of mixing blue and orange paint, which produces a brown colour. I wonder what effect might this have on painting blue paint on orange fabric compared to mixing orange and brown paint.
@RFC-3514
@RFC-3514 2 жыл бұрын
@@adammcinnes5615 - To get the contrasting effect you'd need to use enough blue to make some parts actually _look_ blue (i.e., by completely covering the orange in those areas), which I don't think was what Adam was trying to do, he was just trying to make the orange look dirty / worn. Also, mixing blue and orange will produce "brown" (if you use dark blue) in the sense that it darkens the orange, but the key difference (compared to using black) is that it will produce a less saturated (i.e., greyer) brown. Which is a good thing if you're trying to make it look dusty.

This was a fantastic series! Every episode sent me back to the short so how the new additions looked on the final product. I hope to see these suits other places in the future.
