Adam's latest shop improvement project is all about his table saw! In his near-daily use of this tool, Adam has found inefficiencies and annoyances in the way he adjusts the height and angle of the saw, so he's swapping out the handwheels for new ones that better fit his workflow. It's maintenance he finally has time for, and even little things like giving his table saw handles better hand feel and control means he can better make things with it!

I think that shows what he values most when there isnt a scripted episode. We all know he loves his tools. But now we are seeing just HOW MUCH he loves them. Im sure if he had the option he would make an entire show just about his tools..... What am i talking about, he does have the option now! So hes taking advantage of that.

Taking the axle grease out of the gears that the manufacturer recommends and covering them in wax or another dry lube helps immensely too. Still blows my mind that they ship every table saw packed with sawdust-gobbling grease that they know no one is going to clean and replace.

I agree. Watching Adam try to raise and lower the blade looked a lot more difficult and jerky than mine at home is. I took mine completely apart and used WD-40 as a cleaner and toothpicks to scrape grease out of the teeth before finishing up with a nylon brush then applied a dry chainsaw blade lubricant and have had an incredibly wonderful experience.

Adam I am so glad I found this channel. I doubt you will see this, but I found your channel a few months ago. I literally watch every day. I loved mythbusters, but in my opinion this is so much better. You inspire me to build more by hand than just buying things. I am starting small, but watching the projects on one day builds has shown me I can do more than I thought possible. The satisfaction of building something from scratch is like nothing else. It is reminiscent of the first time I made my first homemade lasagna. A little time and a little effort goes a long way. People typically do not realize the potential they have. You get back what you put in. Nothing feels better than knowing you made something with your own two hands. Thank you sir, my daughter and I will continue to watch for months to come.

Yeah, well, it's not that good of a saw. Were i him, i'd keep an eye for an ancient one. You know, the kind that when you start, you can put dimes on the fence and they won't fall or dance. Cast iron body, cast iron wheels, gears the size of Jupiter's rings, and a motor big enough to use as a counterweight for raising the London bridge. You know, what they used to do before CEOs began cheapening the products so they can sell them for profit.

Hey, just a suggestion: You've gotten 20 years of service out of that Powermatic, and they hold their value pretty well. Your fingers would thank you for upgrading to a Sawstop ICS and speaking as someone who has used both extensively I promise, it's a decent upgrade. And if you have 3 phase power in your shop, just the noise reduction alone is worth the idea of swapping. I can't even hear the motor or belts on my 5hp saw, the sound of the blade cutting through the air is louder. Oh, and that wobble is killing me. Every time I see that saw in the background I'm going to be waiting for it to just randomly lean one way or the other now, physics be damned.

@erictheepic5019 4 жыл бұрын
@@RollingWithTerry But it's still reasonable to replace it in order to upgrade. My computer still works, but I find that it's lacking, and could be better, so I'm currently planning out another PC to replace this one. If no one ever replaced something just because it still works, lots of people would probably be using 20 year old computers, and would be unable to play most modern games, or even use a web browser like Chrome at a reasonable speed. With tools, they never lose their raw ability (ignoring any kind of wear), but better options may come on the market.
@PapiSmerf
@PapiSmerf 4 жыл бұрын
@@RollingWithTerry Unless you can replace it with something better. By that logic we'd still be using hand tools and rope-spun lathes. Something like a table saw wouldn't even be fathomable as a concept. And it's not just the fact that they're for the most part better saws, it's an immeasurably safer saw. Table saw is one of the most dangerous, and physically devastating, tools in the shop so anything you can do to keep it from dining on your flesh is a priority in my opinion.
@devKazuto
@devKazuto 4 жыл бұрын
@@erictheepic5019 Your logic has one flaw. If no one upgraded their computers, modern games would also look like back then. Graphics of games just advanced because the hardware got better and software would be more optimized because of performance constraints. Chromium is semi-poorly optimized and chugs a lot of memory alone, but only because most systems have 8gb or more nowadays. My PC is close to ten years old now, still works and plays most games fine. I don't need to play them on max settings. Story matters, not graphics.

just buy a magnetic digital angle gauge (cca 10-20$ on ebay), stick it on a table saw blade and voila, you can adjust the angle of the blade quickly and quite precisely ;o)
@AndrewRollette
@AndrewRollette 4 жыл бұрын
Those are great but not as accurate as a square. I use one for oddball angles but for 90 and 45 a good square is the way to go. The tolerance of the digital gauges is usually +/-0.1 degree, which works out to .042" per foot, compared to .001" or less for a quality square.

Looks to me like the base is on wheels, but nothing is supporting the long cantilevered side. I ended up welding a custom base for my saw that is basically the footprint of top. I added legs to the overhang so it's supported too. The cast iron wings and cast iron router table insert made it very top heavy, but on the new base it's very stable whether it is up on the wheels or lowered to the floor.
@jimmeier547
@jimmeier547 4 жыл бұрын
A properly leveled cabinet saw like that, so long as everything is properly aligned and running true really will not need bolting to the floor. In fact, if there is any vibration in the unit, bolting it down could lead to the vibration wracking the machine out of whack over time. A finely tuned and leveled cabinet saw will have very little vibration when running. My Delta 10" cabinet saw is almost thirty years old, is on a mobile base, but has no wobble or vibration.
@eWhizz

A stand with wheel, where the wheels can be lifted, lowering the unit to the floor (with adjustable feet perhaps) would be good here. Maintains portability as well as stability.

Hey Adam, have you ever considered doing a one-day shop clean and polish? A video where you go over every tool and machine and really clean and buff them up to an as good as new standard? I know that some tools and machines need its patina, but I cleaned up my own shop last weekend and I went over everything with some cleaning products and oiled and greased everything as it needed it, and boy was that a satisfactory two days I spent! I think It could be a nice thing for people to see and learn how to take care of their tools and machines, and how you like to do it! 😛 Nice video, I loved it and I'm glad you kept that handwheel as it is, I do like it when you can see the age of certain things, and just imagine who used it before and what it was used for... Stuff like that is pretty cool, at least that's what I think! 😄 Keep up the good work! 👍

Another solution to your tap wrench interference problems is to buy a set of tap sockets. They come in sets and fit the square end of most common taps and will fit to a ratchet. Then you can use an extension and get to almost any thread with any regular tap. We use them as millwrights often.
