Going to the movies used to be my favorite thing to do. There was nothing better than seeing an epic film on the big screen with a Coke and popcorn in hand. Now though, that love is gone. Going to the movies is miserable. The people are rude, the staff is lazy, the theaters are messy and the movies themselves are often lackluster. The movie theater industry is in a very tough spot and I don't see things getting any better down the road.

I miss the small theaters. There used to be quite a few around me. There were three in particular that were a big part of my life for the longest time. One by one they closed and disappeared. Even the multiplexes have been atrophied into the awful places we have now. Kudos for keeping the old magic alive, I hope you succeed for the sake of those who never got the experience

This is why I don't go to theater in the weekend or afternoon anymore. People are rude AF when talking during the film right next to me, like when I was watching The Boy and the Heron and these two girls keep commenting on everything happening in the movie. Now I just go in the morning so I can have the entire theater to myself.

Movie theaters are an excellent litmus test to see just how good or bad people can be. For the most part, I leave having a positive experience (I have AMC Stubs AList, and see 5-6 movies/month), but there have been plenty of times where I've had to address rude people, which usually works. I'm sure being a Marine with that '1,000 yard stare' helps immensely.

This is true and sad. I have run movie theaters since the 90s. I see this every shift, every day. People pay no attention to anyone around them and treat the theatre like a theme park. Recently we ran Alien 45th anniversary, Star Wars Episode 1:The Phantom Menace 25th anniversary, The Mummy 25th anniversary...all did very well. What does that say about the state of cinema today? We try very hard at our location to create great memories for our guests. Keep up the great work Adam! Love the channel!

The Regal nearest me just got a huge renovation. Now, there's literally no box office and the place feels like a cemetery with almost no staff. Yep!!! I’m old enough to remember the only concerns when seeing a movie were - getting a good seat, not having a tall person sit in front of you and not having TALKERS near you. Nowadays, the seating issue (and someone’s head in front of you blocking the screen) has been taken care of - and honestly, talkers are no longer a problem. It’s 101% cell phones. That bright ass glow and the fact that they hold it up like a foot from their face so we can all see what they’re looking at during the movie. You’d think that they could at least dial down the brightness and hold it down by their lap if they MUST look at it. Another issue- dim dying bulbs in the projector. So many times I’ve seen a movie and can barely see what’s happening - and it’s completely because the bulbs haven’t been replaced!! Lastly- the other theatre-going issue I despise is when the projector forgets to turn the theatre lights off when the movie starts!

Theaters needs to survive but there's conditions that are needed to be taken in such as annoying moviegoers, ticket prices being way too high, keep the little babies at home (unless you can make kids behave well or you can't afford a babysitter), take the iPads and such away from kids, keep the damn cellphones turned off on silence or brightness turned down and the worst case scenario....stop talking during the movie and wait until it's over. Theaters needs to start enforcing extreme rules for all of that so people can go and watch theaters. Also, cut down the trailers and commercials to at least 3 or 5. And the number one thing is for all of the annoying people i mentioned, if they can't behave properly, they can wait at least 3-6 months before it comes out in theaters.

I just had an Alamo open an hour from me in Naples, FL. I went on opening day. While I appreciate the staffing level, the Alamo is a whole NEW set of disrupting problems. From the waiters hunching over through the aisle to deliver food and drinks next to you every five minutes, to the damn menu lights you can't turn off underneath the tray arm. I literally sat through all of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with the menu propped-up on my crossed knee and balanced against the arm, so I didn't see that light in the corner of my eye. I'm going to say something a little controversial, considering it's a mainly US channel. I've only had one bad experience at a cinema about 18 months ago, and it was caused by Americans from RAF Mildenhall (I think). They were loud, messing about and had their phones on. They got up and left which was odd too.

Like you said, you'd have at least 2 people in the box office, 3 or 4 in concession stand (both sides of the lobby if it was busy), and 1 or 2 ushers to tear tickets and clean between showings. Plus the managers and projectionist upstairs. I started going less in 2019, bad enough that everyone owns smartphones which I really wish didn't exist but now every theater serving alcohol is the final nail in the coffin. It has been overpriced for a good number of years and many theaters stopped caring to keep it clean during the pandemic. I've talked with people in other states about this, it doesn't seem like they are being taken care of and just not as clean overall. They're getting really cheap with using the AC, the only movie that I did see in theaters this year was Dune 2 and it was so damn stuffy. The movie theater experience died years before Covid and that is sad but if all the theaters closed down next week. I wouldn't care at this point because it will never be as great as it was before cell phones, overpriced tickets, alcohol being served and so on.

Thankful it's not that bad where I'm at in New England. We can still usually enjoy a film at the theater up here in peace. Somebody might crack a joke during the movie but that's expected in this region as long as the joke is decent.

The last movie I tried to watch in a theater was at an IMAX. The place was almost empty and so I was confused when an old woman and her family sat right next to me. Immediately the stench of perfume hit me and then she started talking at me and coughing. I left before the trailers were even finished and I haven't been back to any theater since. I'm much happier waiting a little while and watching it at home where the only irritating person is me.

You are correct, people have allowed phones to ruin the experience of going to a movie theater. Even if they aren't talking on the phones, just having to see that little blue rectangle light up go off and light up again constantly. It's just incredibly annoying. The only time I don't see it very much is when I go to foreign films or films that are aimed at an adult audience and those are mostly what I go to. But still I'd rather stay home and watch movies on the TV in my own environment

I don’t go to the movies anymore because, due to the increasingly short time between a movie’s theatrical release and being able to watch it at home, the theaters have put themselves in direct competition with the home viewing experience. Why would I pay a premium to sit in a dark room of strangers when, a lot of times, I can watch the same flick, at home, on the day of its theatrical release? If it isn’t day and date, can just wait 2-3 months for it to drop on VOD/streaming/cable. As the increasingly powerful home consoles made arcades obsolete, so has this release schedule done for the theaters. Convenience always wins out.

If I were a theater owner I would train the audience to act accordingly by doing some or all of the following ; 1) No babies ! Movies are entertainment. A baby can be fascinated by a burning building , a dying butterfly or a dead bird .. they are getting zero , nada, nothing out of a bunch a people screaming at each, or making love , or fighting , or flying a plane into a bridge on a big screen ! 2: No phones on in the theater ! Ever! If a phone goes off they must be escorted out ! House rules ! If they refuse ban them ! 3) introduce the damn movie and thank them for coming and making this experience a joint effort in quiet , visual entertainment! Talking is not going to be entertained in this establishment so if you came here to resolve your marriage issues, take it outside in the bar area . 4) Start the damn movie immediately at the time you say your movie STARTS! Not 3 coke ads, 2 theater ads for concessions , not movie trivia for 12 minutes amd 4 seconds , not 8 trailers and a pop up for XD , the actual fkng time you have on the Marquee

One of the things that bothers me the most is teenagers theater hopping. They'll come at random points during the movie, leave after a few minutes, and sometimes come back. It's something I never understood. I've also experienced people asking me to leave my seat in an empty theater after they arrived more than 10 minutes late.

Certainly different here in AUS, prices are like 20-25 dollars for a ticket depending on what theatre and seats you want. Usually moviegoers are very quiet through the duration of the film but there is always that one person who’s phone rings 15 minutes into the movie. No one cheers/ claps during or after the film, only time that ever happened was of course avengers end game.

That is until I used my dad voice on them. I miss the days at the theater in the 80's. As you said movies used to be events but now people are overloaded with choices and that makes them become the trash that they are. I still blame VHS for bringing on the original decline of the movie going experience. KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON ADAM!

I only ever go to movies there or four times a year and only to movies with little to no online hype. This year, I went to see a musical documentary about the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and there were only 12 other people in the room and the loudest sound was an old woman snoring. And last Wednesday I went to see a documentary about four restaurants in Tokyo owned by the master of their art (sushi master, cake designer working with famous Japanese artist , etc.) and there were only two other people in the room, the only noise was before the movie because another movie was premiering at the same time and a crowd gathered for that premiere. Any other big movies or blockbusters or whatever, I'll catch on TV or online once it's available for free. I just can't justify paying more than 50-60€ yearly on going to the movies when the ticket is 9€ at the cheapest, 14-16€ at the most expensive. That is just how it is for me as a millennial who is old enough to have grown up on another currency than the Euro, 50-60€ is about 350-400 francs and you could buy a TV with VCR back then with that kind of money, not even kidding.

You really struck a cord with me on this one. I love going to the movies but lately I’ve been annoyed for most of the reasons you just listed. I went to a rerelease screening of Spider-Man 3 and one guy a few seats away from me in the same row was literally live streaming sports on his device. I couldn’t believe it, I was so PISSED. There needs to be movie theater chain made where if you’re late to the screening you can’t go in and there should also be a cell phone policy, maybe set something up in the theaters where people can’t go in the theater with their phone or set up a frequency that disables internet usage in the theater. Someone or some company can really capitalize on improving movie theater viewing experiences.

Hi Adam - I've been watching your channel since 2015 approx and always enjoy your reviews. I am in 100% in agreement with you. Fortunately I live in London and there is a cinema chain called Everyman, where the tickets are expensive (around $27 per ticket) however it is always worth spending extra as the people at these cinemas don;t usually use phones and are generally well behaved. If I go to a multiplex like Vue, it is different story, shouldnt have to be this way...

I go to the AMC at Rosedale Mall (perhaps you’re familiar, my Minnesota comrade), and have been seeing a movie every week to two weeks with my A-List for many years now. Honestly, the majority of my experiences have been pretty solid, save for a few scattered incidents. The worst was likely the woman who had a full on phone conversation in a packed Killers of the Flower Moon. Major bystander effect that night because no one did anything about it (but I often reflect on this moment and am sickened by my lack of action 🫨).

When a friend and I went to see kingdom of the apes last Thursday…there was a family of about 15 people that brought their 3/4/5 year olds. Great…but these kids acted like they were in their house and the supposed “parents/adults” didn’t give a shit. Next: the lack of knowledgeable technical staff and upkeep. Far too many theaters don’t project at the right light output to save money. A/C broken etc. There is no more 90 day window where the only chance of seeing a movie is on the big screen. Lowering that window fvcked the theaters. I’m in my 30s and almost every favorite movie I have and every societal norm was before I was born. I was born in the wrong decade.

Truly unfortunate how bad it's gotten. All the way around. From the lack of respect in movie theaters to the quality of the films being produced. I hate to say that I feel like we're passed the point of no return and that deeply saddens me as someone who thoroughly enjoyed the cinema experience growing up. I guess I can simply take solace in the fact that I was even able to experience those times as opposed to never experiencing it at all. And for that, I'm forever grateful and will look back on those times fondly. RIP old friend...
