Repeats Are KILLING TV

Once viewed as a crucial asset for broadcasters, are REPEATS contributing to the erosion of traditional television? Despite being used sparingly during the 20th Century, repeats had their place amongst the TV schedules of old. But in today's climate, do repeats command the same purpose and attention? Or would most viewers like to see the back of them for good...?

ITV has had repeats of The Chase & Tipping Point from 2022 & 2023 for the last 6 weeks now. It's beyond a joke!

How can repeats kill TV when shows become popular?

It reaches peak sillyness when Challenge show Brucie's Price is Right so not only do you have to accurately guess the price of a Suzuki jetski, a caravan and a holiday to Bermuda in the Showcase, you have to work out what they cost combined in 1993.

If you think that's bad. Look at how Midsomer Murders is being aired. 3 years to finish one series!

All I can say is that reruns of the original Dr who on Pluto tv are so much more entertaining than any of the newer shows that it’s no wonder the reruns are so popular and have no production costs to cover

ITV is sitting on a whole bunch of the Gerry Anderson output. I would love them to actually repeat New Captain Scarlet at a time on the schedule that was much better than what they got on their original run.

Repeats and plus one channels in the age of on demand really just emphasises how much we are in a post-peak TV era. Both ITV and BBC could run with this as they should be sitting on a killer pile of archive material but no it seems they only own a small selection or can't navigate the rights to so much of their archives. The only channel to turn archive into a success is probably Talking Pictures TV.

Tbh, it's not the reruns' fault. It's the lack of creativity for new original shows.

I am so sick of repeats. Depends what’s on of course, but most of the time, I am on my video games. No wonder people are turning more to streaming too.

Repeats aren’t killing Talking Pictures, in fact it’s quite the reverse.

The second show on BBC TV in 1936 was a repeat of the first.

Quiz shows like The Chase, Tipping Point and reality TV shows like Love Island, Big Brother are.

what's even more worrying, I think, is how they keep rehashing old shows as though we all really missed them. Nobody was asking for blankety blank back. The Weakest Link is a pointless commodity without Anne Robinson. There's a reason why these shows died in the first place.

Hi Adam. I have had a chat with someone who is well in touch with the media, and he said ITV are sitting on a lot of programming already produced, because their budgets for 2023 and 2024 are very low and they have over produced shows, but held them back to fill late 2024 and into 2025, meaning they didn't have to spend money for that season. So in effect, we are suffering repeats now, to ensure 2024-2025 year is filled out.

My friend was on Pointless Celebrities. He filmed it in October 2022 and was told it should be broadcast in a few months. His episode aired for the first time two weeks ago. It feels like the BBC have been stockpiling episodes of Pointless Celebrities. Richard Osman was still hosting when they filmed it, yet he quit the show well over a year ago. It makes me wonder why they didn’t broadcast this series of Pointless Celebrities sooner instead of showing all these repeats (though I don’t think the BBC are as guilty of this as ITV).

I think TV channels could benefit from having more dedicated Retro-themed blocks, similar to NickSplat, Adult Swim's Checkered Past or even that recent BBC Two 60th anniversary marathon last weekend. Again, I don't know the costs or benefits of doing that, but It's gotta be better than repeating the same fairly recent episode of a show multiple times in the same week.
