Techquickie I don't get why. Denying the content behind a timer makes me hate their company. The well done proper promotions at the end of the video actually intrigue me. For example, I don't really have a use for Freshbooks right now, but I bookmarked anyway, since it seems useful. You can bet I wouldn't have even thought about doing so with an annoying pre-roll.

Techquickie imbedded ads at the end are certainly not an issue. The reason I run adblock is mostly because the ads aren't relevant. So many times I got car insurance ads when I wasn't running adblock that I just got fed up. I'm blind, I don't need car insurance. Or a lot of things that are advertised. I watch the adverts you put in and have considered a few courses on Lynda because of you guys.

I will always use adblock. If all ads were like on reddit for example then fine but 99.99% of ads are annoying and/or scams/viruses/malware/spyware. For this reason I see no logical incentive to stop using it and no, I don't feel guilty at all. I think that if you put malicious/annoying ads on your site, you are the one that should feel guilty, not us.

It's annoying with: -Popups -Casino commercial (they're everywhere!) -"Horny women looking for men" commercial -Videoads on pages that goes full blast audio when you hover your mouse over it. -Trailers that spoil movies And more. If commercials were more modest and less "In your face!", I wouldn't block them. But now I do. I'd rather pay by Patreon to support the ones I subscribe. Not the point of ads. When you think of cars, what do you think of? When you think of candy bars, sodas, fast food restaurants, what do you think of? For every one of those, you thought of something. Because you thought of something, the ad succeeded. It is not to make you buy something immediately but to make you think of those products when you decide you want something. I am thirsty. What do you want? Maybe a coke. I want to grab a quick bite. I heard checkers is having a deal. I need a new car. Those Mercedes sadans look great! You know what you are not thinking of? Polaris cars, Jones soft drink, VU+. Products that may or may not be good but you will never know because they rarely advertise.

I think I have to agree with "PeskyCanadian", due to the way I remember things by linking memory: See a drink ad? Cola -> relaxed -> want action -> drinks soda in GTA -> play GTA car ad? Car -> Driving -> action -> Travel -> RPG or racing game cat food ad? Cat -> Khajiit -> Skyrim loan money ad? Economy -> spreadsheet -> EVE Online or the X space games (X Rebirth/X3 Reunion) game ad? Any game will do Because of entertainment level: Learning < Gaming. Only thing that outweight Gaming is Learning & Entertainment, only time I break over to gaming then are annoying ads that distract me from having a fun learning experience online. In short, any ad I see usually stops me from watching LinusTechTips and start gaming instead, and with that miss that next video I could have given a like. Whitch I guess is both good and bad depending on point of view, and me? I have fun nonetheless.

Same here. I understand that ads are the ones that pay for the operation and maintenance of the website/servers, but some ads really push the limits of annoyance. I click one, just one, button and maybe five pop ups show and there were times that pop ups contain more pop ups. There should be a committee that will regulate these ads. Many of the people arguing against blockers today forget how ad blockers came to be in the first place. If ads were harmless or even moderately annoying, no one would have been motivated enough to create such a rigorous infrastructure like with AdBlock Plus or uBlock Origin. By the early 2000s we were being assulted by pop-ups, pop-unders, Flash ads with sound, Java ads with sound, and more, often with multiples of the aforementioned on the same page. Beyond creating the tools, common users wouldn't have been motivated enough to install blockers were the utility value not so high.

As soon as you can garantee that these braindead adservers stop spewing malware, I'll consider removing adblocking. This is not about paying content creators. This is like publishing you bank data with content creators promising no one will abuse that. It's on you, the content creators, the websites operators and the adservers to weed out malware. Fun Fact: When this video was made the revenue of LTT was greatly depended on AdSense and other kind of Google adds(if there any other kind of, ofc). Now, since LTT has grew up significantly LTT can easily makes money from other sources such as sponsored contents, merch and etc. TLDR: It makes more sense for Linus in this video to call using adblocks piracy than today's Linus.

I like how sites will tell you outright turn ad-block off before we let you view the site. I've found those websites to be the ones with the worst ads, and generally find another of the thousands of sites that offer the same content, but will allow me to use adblock. I specifically keep my ad-block off for YT, and a couple other sites I use regularly because the ads aren't over the top. I'll gladly watch (or more like go pee, get food, etc) a 30 second ad to support channels I like.

So I downloaded this program called Digital Talking Parrot. I hit the default install button, and then my PC was infected with a virus that changed my search engine to Goonsearch and made an ad with a naked woman in it appear on the search page. It even had audio! That was some pretty bad Adware. I think there was text below it that said something like "HOT WOMEN IN YOUR AREA!!!!!!!!11!!!111!" It's been many years since then.

***** Okay, by your logic, I don't like paying bills so how about I just choose not to pay them, as that's my choice! For all intents and purposes the ad you watch on a video is your 'payment' to the site and uploader for it. Only difference is they can't stop you from not watching the ad, and there are no repercussions... for the viewer anyway. I mean you seem like a reasonable person and I admit, I tend to get pretty salty whenever adblock is mentioned, but to put my thoughts more concise: Why should the creator not get anything in return for your entertainment, especially when the only cost is a few seconds of your time?

I so much prefer the in-video advertising done by the creators. My problem with ads has nothing to do with the ads themselves...but rather the crappy computer I spend a lot of my time on. I have had numerous browser crashes on the PC I'm typing this from when I allowed ads. I also got malware from ads that ran on a sports website and a webcomic website...because the advertising platforms are not immune to being compromised. I love it when the channels I enjoy showcase the merch or talk about how I can save money on my mobile data plan...or my website expenses...or other things. That means that I am still supporting the people I like without having to put my computer either at risk, or into nasty performance mode. I don't have much money...and so don't tend to buy stuff...but hey, I don't buy stuff from the external ads either.

I come to watch videos like Linus's to learn about a product which I am considering buying, that's all the ad I need to see. I am not going to sign up for some crap like freshbooks because I have absolutely no need for that and is a waste of my time to watch such an ad.So therefore I block the ads.

+Robert Floyd I have to agree that a good number of Linus' videos are about a product or number of them that I would consider buying so the whole video is almost an ad in itself. Related to how I get annoyed when I watch a movie trailer just to get an ad for another movie before it.

+Robert Floyd Advertising does work, and it works really well. That's why successful companies spend billions on it -- they know what they're doing. It's not just as simple as buying a product when you see an ad, it's putting a brand or a product into your memory by showing it to you over and over. You may never buy the product, or you may buy it months or years from now. Have you ever bought a Coke? How do you know advertising hasn't contributed to some of those decisions?

tmnsoon Yes I know advertising works. It has worked on me. But it is very hard to do anything now-a-days where there isn't some sort of advertising and I for one am tired of seeing it. So I block a few ads on you tube, they'll get over it.

+Robert Floyd let me put it this way, when you go to website or watch a youtube video with adblock the creator doesnt get any money from you visiting, now imagine everybody using adblock so now nobody is making any money off their hard work. Then they will stop showing it for free so you have to pay to see it, and then the free internett we enjoy today dies out. Now remeber this the next time you deside to turn on adblock
@markbrown3587

AdBlock understands this and that is why they have a set of acceptable guidelines such as no auto play videos or ads that cover content (option enabled by default). For those that do not abuse ads and if the AdBlock user does not disable this option then acceptable ad content is not blocked. One can find the specifics at adblockplus.org/acceptable-ads

You really should mention whitelisting! It's the perfect balance. I don't get invasive or harmful ads from random pages I visit, and I simply tell Adblock not to block ads on my favourite sites so the still get revenue.

Sponsorships. If companies want to advertise, they use sponsorships. Because I am sick and tired of: >Loud unskipable prerolls, especially when irrelevant to the video I am trying to watch >Multiple ad popups >Struggling to run HD video but the ad loaded perfectly in HD quickly >Noisy or flashy ads, especially when you can't mute or stop the video >Ads which intrude on the space of the website >Ads which take so long to load the page times out >Pop ups (unfortunately they haven't got rid of the "Join our mail list" or "Like us on Facebook" shit yet) >Malicious ads that actually put software you don't wnat on your computer >Trying to download and seeing 10 different download links, and the real link being the least obvious >Ads, typically the type mentioned above, that fool less conscious people into clicking on them and installing the software >etc etc When ad makers improve their game, I may consider not using adblock. I don't give a shit aobut website maintenance and server costs, get your shitty, obnoxious, deceptive, malicious ads out of our face. We use the internet for the content, with ads on the side. Our experience shouldn't be hindered with *BUY THIS!!!!! CLICK THIS LINK!!!!!* That should not be what we use the internet for or the main experience. Advertisers need to make us want their product, not simply have the loudest, most annoying ad. And the fact that ads allow malicious people with malicious intent? No, I use adblock, no regrets.

+MrPicklepod Are have been guild-tripped.. and wrongfully so. You are not obliged to have a bad internet experience so that some people get money via dubious methods for their hobby. Because that is what it means if a job does is not viable as a source of income.. a hobby. These hobbyists are already getting a lot for free. video hosting-space and bandwidth to start with. You don't owe them a god damn second of your time and if they want money for their "hard work" then they better properly sell it!

Tronald Dump Did you use the skills your got from lynda.com to start up a business where you used freshbooks to manage it and squarespace to set up a website? If yes, did 5 months down the line you noticed that one of your employees computer's needed fixing so you bought an ifixit toolbox, and then realized you were too busy working on fixing the computer that you couldn't go out and buy any razors to shave, so you bought a subscription plan for dollar shave club? Did you then shave money, and shave time with the company you built beautiful?.
