I could just KISS you. As in " Keep It Simple Stupid" I have been working on a neat device to tell it my garage door is opened.. Battery powered , mercury switch , write software etc, etc...complicated but ALMOST working. Then you came thru with a simple non complicated solution. Oh did I say cheap. AND I can turn on some other device like maybe the charger for the battery in my mower. Thanks for your creative, clearly thought out ideas and projects which you fully explain in usually less than 10 minutes.

All the automation can be done with the Sonoff itself without even having to mess with HA. Just set up a rule in the Sonoff that triggers when the switch is activated then send a command to any other device you want to power on. I have a Sonoff that opens/closes my garage door. I have a reed switch connected to it to detect if door open or closed. Rule1 Detects garage door is open sends a Web command to my garage lights to turn them on. Rule2 detect garage closing, waits for 3 mins then sends a Web command to turn off my garage lights.

That idea has crossed my mind a bunch of times. The biggest issue is that I'm not sure my daughter fully understands what warrants pressing an "I need help" button. She does have an echo dot in her room now and she knows how to use the "drop in" feature for intercom. We've told her to only drop in if she REALLY needs help, but she occasionally drops in because she "heard a noise that was noisy", or something along those lines :)

Whilst it MAY prove easier for soldering novices to mount the pins the way you suggest, using fresh solder, some flux and solder wick braid will provide: a) the ability to fit all pins in one strip b) only require access to the top or bottom of the board to remove the solder from the holes so the board can be kept much more stable (Blu Tac is a great way to keep it still without buying helping hands or a portable vice) c) all the pins will align properly first time so that a single multi pin connector may be used easily. All in all, worth the price of some solder wick (desolder braid) and a better soldering experience - all the pins can be soldered in one go. Great video with lots of useful info.

I really love the sonoff pricepoints. But the basic R2 uses 1.5W idle and 2.5W load. Since I want everything in my house to be controllable (I know who doesnt) it makes little sense to have THAT many watts being drained away .. coincidentally the powr2 uses 0.6W idle and 0.9W load which is great! I wish people would post the power these used somewhere.. I'm specially eyeing the tx series of switches and the 4ch ones

No its not! Do you not agree that the most important topic is ELECTRICAL SAFETY especially when a child is involved??? I see you and him fast to show people to just "Tazmotize" these things, and they are not even UL rated! You should not be encouraging people with no electrical backgrounds to take on projects like this. In the video, "just buy a soldering iron, and tie on to a board that carries mains voltage with little wires through a little hole of the device on the floor of your daughters bedroom" without even a word about electrical safety? That doesnt sound like "Well Done!" to me. Did ANYONE even pay attention to see if these little wires you solder on running out of the device are referenced to the mains? I remind you a Sonoff is not a finished enclosure. I suggest you read this thread: community.home-assistant.io/t/sonoff-safety/28636/2 and this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btOqaNZ0ptyocY0.html Your video on the Sonoff RF bridge with the RF sensor would be a much safer and sensible idea for such a project.

Haven't actually got mine yet, but I'd have thought you could wick the solder out of the holes, drop in your five pin header as a single piece, then solder each pin individually? I don't know why but I find it much easier to solder when I'm concentrating on one hand doing something fiddly rather than both, and with a full set of headers you can just rest it upside down and let gravity do the hard work.

Any advice or opinions about connecting multiple reed switches in series with the sonoff? As always I want to thank you for all of your videos. I have learned so much on the last 8 months from you. I would be extremely thankful if you can answer this question. I am using a sonoff sv to control an irrigation system. I want to add a capacitive soil moisture sensor to the sonoff, so besides having temperature and humidity provided by an DTH11, I will also have a reading of soil moisture. The sonoff does not have a pin for analog reading. In this video you are using the magnetic sensor which requires an analog pin, is that correct? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 5 жыл бұрын
The reed switch is magnetic, but it reports a binary value (on/off). I think you are thinking of a hall effect sensor. The ESP8266 has a single analog pin but it isn't broken out on sonoff devices. Maybe you'd be better off with a nodeMCU or D1 mini and a relay board?
@Fifury161

Novice projects should not directly control or connect to mains voltage projects. Those pin headers are at mains potential with respect to earth. I appreciate you just want to share your project, however I would encourage you to highlight the dangers involved and hopefully anyone following this project has enough common sense to realise the dangers... FWIW I bought a lot of Sonoff devices, I haven't used them yet as I realised they need to put in a mains rated enclosure. I have seen too many projects where they just splice it into the mains wire to control that device. Whilst that does work it puts any user at risk (the cables can easily be pulled out for a start!).

Tasmota is amazing, but it's close to being too big to do OTA or upload upgrades. I started using ESP12F modules and relays rated higher than the circuit breaker. A 12F configured for 3MB/1MB can OTA upgrade, even with every Tasmota option enabled.

A Chinesium 5V switching power supply, and an LM3117 linear regulator. ESP12Fs tends to draw current in spikes, so add a 100uf. That's barely adequate, so check yours with a scope while the ESP is transmitting and receiving.

I’ve only known about these things for a week and now I want to make everything in my house smart. And I only learned about them because I wanted to hook up myq to a BFT control board and found out myq was subscription based and only works with certain models of liftmaster products. This seemed silly to me so I set out to prove my coworker wrong only to find out he was right. Then I found a video about the sonoff sv. I instantly knew I could use these devices and possibly a great many of them so I bought 4 to play with and another 4 basics. I already have my overhead garage door on a sonoff sv, my coffee maker is on a standard sonoff for the schedule function on ewelink, today I’m wiring an old electric strike from a job that still works well to the pedestrian door on my garage with a sonoff sv. If that works well, I’m going to get a new assa abloy electric strike for my back door. And I’m just getting started. From work I got my hands on some really high quality wired outdoor reed switches for gates or overhead doors that I really want to wire into one of these WiFi switches, that will then notify me of the door being opened or left open. The only thing holding me back is I don’t have a computer, so I’m a little leery about trying to flash or using the more complex home automation programs....really I don’t want to buy more components that will end up on a shelf if I’m not sure about it. I know, should just try and see how deep I can get, either way I will learn something. Thank you for sharing your knowledge it is helping me a lot

If you read your comments, please please re-edit this video with warnings. As long as the reed switch is rated for mains Voltage, not the common security type, it can be safe. Sonoff has no isolation from the mains. any wire connected to inside MUST BE TREATED AS LIVE. The wires also need strain relief. Hot glue is not good enough. A cable tie inside is better. If someone follows your instruction and kills themself then what..
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 4 жыл бұрын
I read all the comments. Your statement that "sonoff has no isolation from the mains" is not correct. Sonoffs, especially the R2 have very decent mains isolation. An arc-short event caused by a significant power surge could cause mains to jump into the low voltage area, but it is pretty unlikely.

He uses homeassistant which is the biggest smart home open source project I gives you one place to control everything in your home. The home assistant community (im on there) is super helpful. He talks about Tasmota this is a replacement firmware for sonoffs firmware and generally most guys flash Tasmota onto any sonoff gear this gives you better control over the device and makes it easy to integrate with home assistant.

No that is Google Home which has many limitations but is used in conjunction with www.home-assistant.io so you program all your iot through home assistant as the master control panel and can link your Google Home and minis so you have voice control as well. home-assistant doesn't have an android app. It is an operating system that needs to be installed in its own area like windows. Most people start out by buying a raspberry pi+ coz its simplest way to install on low power always on device. home assistant community is full of help you won't find a great deal on KZfaq.

@@LlamaOates Oh thank you for the explanation. I still want my Sonoffs to be controlled via Android or iphone App. If homeassistant runs on windows or in RPi, I therefore have to make my own Android App. Or maybe An App embedding a web browser with address bar hidden. It is accessed via browser. On Android Chrome you got to the home assistant and then on the browser click on the three dots for Chrome options and add to home screen which adds shortcut to your screen and invokes it to work like and app. I have on all my phone's and tablets and just about to mount a tablet to my kitchen wall I am currently working building house alarm in it so I have a tab menu for house alarm and inside that I have on screen keypad I can see every PIR and door sensor and whether they are open or closed history when they last detected. It makes broadcasts announcements to my Google home speaker if door or window is open when I set the alarm and sends messages to mine and wives mobile phone via Push bullet app which I can include which sensor and if camera is near sensor I can send a pic in the message lots of cool stuff.

There's another trick you can use where you write an automation for when home assistant restarts, send an MQTT message like "hi" to the group topic (sonoffs/cmnd/power1) and it will cause the sonoffs to register an unknown command and then report their actual state in the state topic.
