I found an original airport express from my old mac I sold. I never even knew what it was until I bought a nice vintage kenwood receiver and did what you said. Sounds good and now I can use my ipad as a music streaming device for free.

Is that a1392 model the only one can use airplay 2? Or any other express/extreme? And also do you know to create a home theatre setting with homepods with a subwoofer connected to the airport? Thanks!!

I’ve been doing this for years, with my Yamaha CA1000 and Marantz 2325. I have questions as far as Hook up goes and contacted Apple by phone I was surprised how much support I got from them as far as resetting the Xpress and hooking it up to my present Wi-Fi. A couple years ago I bought a.Schiit modi and like you heard a big difference. No I would not spend the six or $700 for a BiFrost, but you are right and airport express a modi, Does the trick!

The Belkin SoundForm Connect can do this now and is airplay 2. Not sure if it can do 44.1 at 16bit but I'm thinking it should be at least as capable as the Apple airport.

I've been using Apple Express for many many years to stream to multiple amps (using software called Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba) . Can you please clarify; do you hear a marked improvement in the audio by using a DAC and Toslink cable as opposed to using the 3.5mm output? Cheers

you and I have much in common.. frugality and vintage HiFi interests and are Apple users. What I find tho as I age I am slipping back into analog and need to actually see the physical connections.. any chance of adding that? Ive had this 2nd gen Airport for several years now and would like tot know the various ways to use it with my hi fi as I understand there are several..

Have you checked an apple tv 3rd generation? you can pick them up for around the same $30-40 and it has digital out integrated. You can Airplay out of it as well.

Great video! I’ve done a similar thing, but with a used Apple TV from eBay. They got rid of the optical output on the newer models! But the old ones have it and they’re cheap. I also have a “skit” modi 3. Ha ha.

This is a great solution! I was considering purchasing one of these and wanted to know how well they worked with a vintage receiver. Your presentation answered that for me! What was the unit you connected it to via TOSLink cable? Can you post a link to this product? I would like to consider that in addition to the Airport Express. Thanks again!

Even better is an Apple TV 1080p 3rg Generation for $20. It gave me the TOSLINK audio out that the newer Apple TV dropped. Now I have my main 4K AppleTV in the living room and the older Apple TV in my den that connects to an older Yamaha 100w AVR which drives my Vandersteen speakers. Now all my iPhones and especially my iTunes (Windows laptop (115 GB iTunes library) can stream into the living room and den simultaneously with independent volume control for each device. My version requires a more modern AVR with TOSLINK input, or your can buy a Schitt DAC ($80 used) and get even better digital audio into an older system. I plan on getting a Schitt DAC when I upgrade my Audio 2.0 system with a Rotel preamp and amp.

Great video! Am just curious, what’s the difference between Airplay 1 and Airplay 2 if you just want to just stream music? I have an older Pioneer AV amp with built in AirPlay 1. My understanding is Airplay 2 you can stream video as well as stream music playing in different rooms at the same time! Music quality between Airplay 1 & 2 is the same right ?

Hi. Thanks for the video. I just bought an AirPort Express for 10$. Just to make sure I understand well: instead of using a RCA to 3.5mm , you use an optical cable that you plug to Schiit Audio Modi DAC (any specific model?) that is connected to your Pioneer amplifier. Is that correct? Thanks.

I have a exact same set up, the output via airplay 2 is not fixed. The volume controls on your iPhone or iPad controls the output. What I do is just turn it up all the way and let my pre-amp control the volume. Keep in mind, only the last generation AirPort Express supports airplay 2 the previous generation, that looks like a power transformer, does not but those do support airplay 1. I have one of those in the garage to stream to my old garage hi-fi system.

Tips: Reset the Airport to factory settings before beginning; Join your wifi network from iPhone Settings > Wifi, not from the Airport Utility.

Is it possible to have Airplay functionality without an internet connection? I can set up everything with an internet connection, but the building I want to utilize this Airport/Airplay setup in does not have a connection.

I don’t think so, if I understand correctly what you want to do. This can only be streamed to from Apple devices, like iOS or MacOS. An AppleTV could probably do the trick as long as you play the content through it.

Take a look at the Wiim pro. Connect CD player to that, and use WiiM minis as endpoints

That's one of the cheapest way to get Airplay! I went with Sonos Ports just so it can work in standalone mode.

Here's the most common solutions you can use: WIFI Audio: Apple Airport -> 3.5mm and toslink. US$30 - Used WIFI Audio: Google Chromecast Audio -> 3.5mm and toslink. US$50 - New (ebay) WIFI Audio+Video: Apple TV -> HDMI. US$30 - Used WIFI Audio+VIdeo: Google Chromecast -> HDMI. US$40 - New BLUETOOTH: Only with speakers built in. Acually is an Airport and Chromecast audio Killer. Team Apple used?, team Google New? or team new bluetooth speaker? Make your choice!
