I don't know the exact proper wording but doesn't raspbian support multiple desktops. Couldn't you setup your python script on one desktop and the map on another and camera on another so that you can swipe from 1 to the next? I think by default Linux desktops require you to open a menu to switch between but desktops but Linux allows for extreme customization so there should be a way to change that to a swipe command. (After all Android is just Linux with a custom Google designed interface) Android allows swiping from desktop to desktop or Page to Page basically the same thing?

I think the next step would be putting it all together i.e. making an interface that allows you to use the backup camera, gps, and speedometer.

What do you use to power your Raspberry Pi from the 12V car power? I have a Raspberry Pi3 I want to use in my RV as a media server but I want to run it off the 12V supply. Nobody can tell me what power adapter to use. All 12V USB supplies seem to max out at ~2.1A. My 120V wall plug supplies 2.5A. TIA.

You should be able to call a function that launches an other program, if node js can do it using child processes and C/C++ can do it with exec/system, I'm willing to bet there is something for Python to do it. Also, very nice video! but I wonder if Navit can show the way you are going while you drive

No need to add GPS for me, my 2007 Saturn Ion comes with GPS on the OBD! :) Probably related to it's built-in On-Star.

Maybe if every part of the RPI wasnt masochistically painful then more people would try it. I can plug in my laptop and have a fully functioning GPS with downloaded maps in about 30 seconds. Why does everything in Pi World have to be like having 3rd molars pulled without Novocain?

Would it possible to use a regular gps and connect it through your display? Essentially switch displays on click? May be a bit bulkier hardware wise but seems like a fairly easy solution.

Sadly, I am not an expert at coordinates, so I'd prefer the Google Maps API but something privacy oriented.

When are u going to finish this project bro? I installed Navit on a raspbian lite image among other apps like Kodi. I'm currently testing with buttons to close apps within openbox and switch to Kodi or Navit for example. I could not find any other solution except for installing android on the pi and just run Kodi and navigation from there etc.

Once again, I would suggest using a web browser as UI. You can display offline maps with the leaflet API in a web browser.

Will the raspberry pi 3b+ using it over usb connetion with my high end Tesla style(Don't own yet coming soon) car head unit sharing the internet with my t mobile syncup drive 2? I don't have the new Tesla style car head unit as of yet but I would like this head uinit to connect to my t mobile syncup drive 2 using the 5 included WIFI connections but have the raspberry pi 3b+ share the internet connection over USB? I have already installed 3 WIFI Wyze cams inside of my Lincoln Navigator, one as a backseat dash cam using the Wyze cam 2.0 and the other 2 are Wyze cam pan that rotate around my SUV when motion happens! Next my Plxel 2XL uses the WIFI and last will be the head unit. T mobile syncup drive 2 only allows 5 simultaneous connections and I will reach that once I install the new high end Tesla style car head unit. I would like to know if I use the USB port from the raspberry pi 3b+ will it get internet from the high end Tesla style car head unit. I know I should include the model information of the high end Tesla style car head unit but I may change this one out with a better option! I am looking to add a Android smart 12' display to my Lincoln Navigator and hope this is a start to a helpful place to help me to achieve this goal! Thanks for your help or anyone reading this!!! I would've done this a different way: use an x86 based single board PC instead of the raspberry pi so that I can use Windows 10 goto the settings app in Windows 10 and download the map for my area which comes from Nokia Here Maps/ Nokia Here WeGo plug in a USB GPS so the map can track me without a GPS.

You can easily increase the zoom a lot and add two shortcuts on the desktop, one to the map and another the your program

Seems like a ton of unnecessary work. You can just put a three year old android tablet in your center console and you could save yourself a ton of hassle (plus your maps & your custom gauges wont look like trash)

GPS Receivers don't really "communicate with" the GPS satellites; poor word choice. GPS receivers are are receive-only. Reminds me of the infamous GM ad which showed the GPS satellites following a vehicle around and receiving signals from the car - false advertising.

Any GPS system in 2018 without live traffic update is as good as a rock. Good for rural driving but for city no thanks.
