I thought the genius shot was the lob but I love the way you pointed out what the strategies are.

The lob was a great shot for sure. Thanks for the comment.

I know a lot of players that hit great lobs but the recovery of the receiving team was what separates the good from the great. First the communication where the guy on the serve side pivoted away and then back toward the net but more impressive was the great drop shot return. Awkward position but a great touch. I would have probably tried lobbing it back high and deep. That lob beats most rec players, if not outright then with a weak return.

working on the shot, having to break myself from hitting the drive when its not the best. Trusting the drop. I think I will trust it more when I practice it more and know its going in shallow.

Thank yo for sharing this video clip of 4 of the best senior pros in the world. My analysis is on their shot selection and which technique of either topspin or under spin was used. There was not one topspin shot used. The serve was a deep slice with an open paddle face, the return was an open paddle face, the third shot was an open paddle face hitting a drop shot so the ball would land in front of the opponent's feet , the 4th shot was an open paddle face hitting a dink to land in front of Staub's feet, his shot was a backhand dink with open paddle face to hit a dink back into the kitchen, Olin's next shot was a well placed forehand dink going crosscourt, Staub then hits an open paddle face under spin lob over the backhand side of Waddell who runs back and returns with an open paddle face a very accurate under spin drop shot which resets the point, they move back in and Scott moves around his backhand and hits an attacking shot with an open paddle face to Waddell's forehand. The ball was not hit defensively to land in front of his feet but instead was meant to be an attack but Waddell has some of the best hands in the world and hits a very accurate attacking shot with an open paddle face to Staub's forehand side and he wasn't even able to get his paddle on the ball. High level players often attack the forehand side because most players cover the mid section with their backhands. One of the bottom lines would be Scott Moore saying to Brian Staub, "sorry. I sped up my shot the Waddel and I should have reset my shot to bounce in front of his feet."

Hello Gregg. No spins indeed :). An often misunderstood part of the game by many many players. Appreciate the thoughtful exchange.

After the successful rundown & return of the lob , there was no reason to start a speed up so soon . A reset and accepting a back to neutral circumstance was in order . PATIENCE- PATIENCE-PATIENCE !

The only reason those soft shots that are claim to be genius work, is because most players backhand is lame and weak. You would think pros would have better control and access to their backhand.
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach Жыл бұрын
The pros seem to be doing fine. They understand and use this shot (as in this breakdown) because they understand its effectiveness. Give it a try in your games and let us know how it works (or doesn't).

So bad. The return of serve is short, the server is not in position because it is such a bad return. The 2nd shot should have been a drive! The genius shot was the great lob. You are way off...

No worries Clay. With some work you too will be able to fully see the rally and understand why the shot highlighted in this video was genius (the lob was a fine shot). Keep working at it and thanks for being a part of our journey.

I feel like I can do something better for you here Clay. From your texts I am going to assume you are a young man. And it is easy during that stage of life to fall into the trap of thinking we have it all solved. That we see all the angles. Every man I know (myself included) has gone through that stage. My guess is that your loved ones are trying to tell you the same thing as I will here, but perhaps they are not getting through. So I will give it a try. It is good to believe in yourself and have confidence. But you want to balance those out with a bit of humility. When a player who has been teaching pickleball for a few years (maybe longer than you have been playing) suggests an idea, perhaps think on it for a bit rather than dismissing it out of hand. There may be something to learn there. In the end, you can disagree with the premise but do so from a position of thought and knowledge after contemplating things a bit more. In this case, you apparently missed the point of the video and the lesson it had to teach. The shot highlighted in the video is a shot that most pro players (not just Senior Pro, in case that makes a difference in how you view it) use to great effect. The lob was a very nice shot but it was an obviously good shot. The shot highlighted is a shot that is not quite as obvious, yet it is a tremendously effective shot. I hope this message is of use to you as you continue on your path. You are obviously a pretty good pickleball player and learning these sorts of techniques can help you continue to improve - as we all can. @@claycc79

I see 4 old guys standing straight up in none athletic positions hitting below average shots. The dink in the middle should have been taken out of the air. Instead he retreats and let's it bounce and hits a low skill shot back. This video may be good for seniors that can't move but there is nothing genius about this point. The only part of this point that was good, was the lob and the return of the lob. I would rethink your experience claim...you would lose to me every time in a game. I see the look in the eyes of guys like you all the time.

As a former tennis player of 30 years, I can say this is NOT 4 person tennis. Very different kind of play, skills, and strategies. It's taken me a couple of years to unlearn/relearn many of my ingrained tennis shots. :)

The way some pickleball bozos describe some basic racket skills as genius in pickleball is so hilarious. The genius player here seems to be playing with half a knee and a replacement hip the way he moves. Any 50+ active tennis amateur will kick these guys asses after half a day of practice of pickleball
