Just went on a trip up the Lochsa River in Idaho for a few days to do just this thing. I was able to outsmart a few fish with a 6'6" Ugly Stik and a handful of Panther Martin spinners. I love fishing small creeks like this because I feel a close connection to the fish I'm chasing. Love the trout tutorials by the way guys, keep up the good work!

One of the most effective things I’ve learned is drifting and twitching a small unweighted plastic swimbait. The 3” rage swimmer seems to work the best for me. It’s a very versatile way to catch fish.

I like using a Mepps Anglia spinner, for me it is the most productive spinner on the market. Brass works best for me. I also like using a fly with a single split-shot, the smaller the better about two feet above the fly. Doesn't matter if the fly is a wet or dry. Nothing better than mountain creeks, away from crowds , the fish are aggressive and fight like crazy. Good video.
@rawr6306
@rawr6306 4 жыл бұрын
David Worthen Awesome. Another Mepps Agila fan! I use both brass and silver and tend to use #1s. Always carry 0-3 however in both colors and a few skirted. I’ve nailed decent size rainbow in fast tumbles using size 0s simply because it’s so much lighter I can cast upstream and let it stay above the rocks whereas a 2 would ride too deep and snag. I also like to use single hook models of these which are hard to find sometimes so I’ll just buy extras and switch hooks. Sure you’ll miss/lose a few fish but in the catch and release areas it’s so much easier and quicker to get them off the hook. Even trickier are the barbless hook regulation areas.

I really like your topic. Water clarity, temp, light all effect bait presentation almost identically. Trout fight differently, usually in more open water where bass run for the bottom or cover. Bass are different as they are a bit more organized coralling bait fish at certain times.

I have learned a lot from this channel so thankyou. I caught my first trout on a spoon in my whole life two weeks ago thanks to this channel. My preferred method for small rivers and creeks is Tenkara. I either use a dark Kebari or a elk hair caddis. I have had people laugh at my setup then watch me catch a fish 5 min later. What I like about it is the minimalism. I got tired of hauling all the tackle to the backcountry spots i like to go to. I can fit all of my kit in my pocket and the rod telescoped down to about 12 inches. Obviously I don't use this setup on larger rivers but I have been researching getting a larger tenkara rod that is designed for large rivers, it is done in japan.

I have done well with a fly and a wine cork. Just tie the wine cork about 3 feet up from the fly. The cork is not used as a strike indicator, but just gives enough weight to cast a fly and it floats too. I have found this to be a good way to fish flies without having a fly rod setup.

In Oregon for rivers like this.. I use a 7' medium/fast action spin casting rod with 6lb leader. I almost exclusively use no 2 - no 6 panther martin lure depending on the size of the trout available. If the river allows live bait I'll bring an extra float rod and nightcrawlers or red wigglers. Any water where it looks like bugs and things would be caught up and dizzy, that's where I fish. Fish, like plants, grow to their container size. Small rivers, I'll catch mostly 8" - 11" , medium - large rivers 8" - 15". and the big chunky boys are at the bottom of lakes. I typically walk a 1/4 mile mile area up and down for a half day. We can only keep 2 trout per day on a lot of rivers in Oregon(some have a limit of 5) so it's balancing what realistic sizes of trout are in the river with what to keep.

Used to live within a half mile from a good trout stream and really got into the creek fishing on that. Personal opinion but nothing beats a hook n crawler, that being said I started building my own spinners about 3 years ago and rarely do I use crawlers anymore. 1/8oz down to 1/16oz frenchies or inlines on 4-6lb line. I've never bought braid but I'm thinking the the next time I get line for my stream rods I'll switch it up and give it a shot. You guys obviously seem to like it and I've been getting tired of re-lining every 2 months due to line memory. Great video!

I'm learning a lot from you about trout fishing after basically abandoning it for many years in favor of deep sea fishing. I got spoiled by easy catches offshore. The last trout I caught, I accidentally snagged and he was already dying before I got him landed. Even my cats wouldn't eat him, so there was something wrong with it. I never was a very good trout fisherman, in fact most of the trout I ever caught were pretty much on accident. Catfish were more my style, but I won't eat bottom feeders anymore. So, I'm binge-watching how to catch trout.

My most effective spinning rod n reel I ever had was all the way from the USA 🇺🇸 wallmart in arizona, my parents were on holiday and they bought me a little telescopic kit for about $40 and brought it back to the isle of man in the UK, it's action was perfect and it was only 6ft so I could get into tight corners, I caught alot of great big trout on that set up until it got stolen when camping it vanished from my tent when I was back in town getting supplies.

That stream is much like the ones I fish in the Sierras. That is by far my favorite type of fishing. I'll fish lakes sometimes but usually, it'll be just about like that one. I'm also a spinner guy and will usually start with a #4 PM in black/gold which it looks like what you were using. I have others of course but that's my usual go to at least for starters. This year, I am experimenting with dressed PM lures, but it's too soon to make judgements. Too much late snow and the streams are still very high and cold. Going to go downhill about 1000' in elevation this afternoon to see what happens.

My preference for streams like that is a 6'6" - 7' 3w fly rod w/a royal coachman (me being in the northeast). Or something that's hatching.

My absolute favourite type of fishing! I also have great success with a #3 or #5 brown trout pattern Rapala countdown. I almost always start with one! Great videos guys!

Lately I've been hooked on just drifting a night crawler on a size 4, for whatever reason my recent favorite spot thats the only thing that works to land anything bigger than 12-13 inches and it's a 14 inch min. on wild rainbows here, been catching 18-23 inchers pretty consistently on the good ole free drifting worm ... but as far as fun goes though I get why you prefer spinners :)

Years ago I was fishing Jim Creek near Arlington, Wa with a Colorado spinner. Couldn't get a bite. I then found a periwinkle and put in on the hook and caught a rainbow with the 1st cast. I was salmon fishing off of Meadowdale just south of Everett, during the summer when there were no runs. I was using pop gear with a McMannon spoon, to draw in a lone fish. No luck until I put a little piece of herring on the hook. Caught a nice 7lb black mouth. My conclusion is that fish can smell. Thanks for the info. Lots of great tips.

Salmon and trout use sense of smell to find their natal streams as returning adults. A salmon can smell scent at a rate of a few parts per billion.

I'm a firm believer of fishing early morning or early evening.. simple logic, the fish can't see all night and are extra hungry as soon as it breaks dawn. Evening time brings out certain insect hatches and the waning daylight puts them in strike mode before the long night ahead of them

Good video. A lot of good info. I've caught more trout with my panther martins than any other lure, definitely my go to. I prefer creeks, rivers with beaver ponds 👌

Kudos for a great video and concept. So many trout fishing videos are simply a couple of yokels casting somewhere with no explanation of where or how, what they use and why, etc. Your video is interesting and informative. I fish the small streams of the beautiful driftless area of far northeast Iowa using my own style of homemade, in-line spinner. I catch a lot of fish and have a ball. Your knowledge of small stream fishing is spot-on. Keep up the good work!

I find that a light 7 foot spin-cast rod, 4 lb test, and a hook tied right to the line with a piece of redworm or night crawler with no split-shot and I limit out on holes. Food and oxygen causes them to sit below the falls and sitting in those deep holes is to keep cool in the heat of summer and avoid predators. I have caught trout in darn near trickles of water in the hottest summer months in the mountains. We have also seen the giant pacific northwest salamander to above huge waterfalls that you would not think they could get above, like Snoqualmie Falls in King County WA. Grew up fihsing in the Au Sable in Michigan for trout, and the Great Lakes for walleye and perch.

Great vid Jordan! Slinging iron is always fun. I also like drifting a single egg or bead and a tiny split shot a few feet behind a corky, thingamabobber or other strike indicator.
