Nice install the only thing is i would have not used a malet on the shims could have bent them and thrown the spacing off did you check the lash yet .... What made you go with Nismo instead of other brands

Great video! Did you have to mark the pinion gear and the ring gear when u removed the ring gear out of the diff? Thanks
@skidpancake
@skidpancake 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No, I didn't mark it. From what I remember, the parts are fairly uniform all the way around, so it should work no matter the rotation. I've gone ahead and added a link to the official installation instructions in the description for reference.

Hey 3 months later, would you say it’s daily drivable? Like noise wise. I’m looking to upgrade but I really don’t want to have to deal with the noise that comes with most of them.
@skidpancake
@skidpancake 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, still my primary vehicle. Mostly just humming on the freeway, but you get used to it. Not much sound on city streets.

Nice. I just got a 350z and the kid put a Tomei 2way in but when I back up or go slow I hear popping or like stutter from the tires. You think that's normal for a 2way or do you think he might have messed something up or not used the friction additive maybe?
@skidpancake
@skidpancake 3 жыл бұрын
It's normal to hear some stuttering and squealing from the tires and maybe even a whine on the freeway, but you shouldn't hear any popping or grinding from within the diff.
@lex4lyfe870
@lex4lyfe870 3 жыл бұрын
It’s normal the tomei 2 way is a loud diff it acts like a welded diff that’s why your tires losing traction at low speeds when trying to park or reverse….it’s probably the cheapest set up tho 1500 for the diff and the 3.9 ring gear if you want one that drives like oem quaife is the way to go…

How's the ride for street driving? Is there a lot of chatter, wheel jump, tiring rubbing? I'm debating on getting this but my car is mainly street driven
@skidpancake
@skidpancake 2 жыл бұрын
A little squealing on corners sometimes, but rides smooth. The only real noise is a hum when on the freeway. I only drive it on the street.

Ok thanks. What do you mean official instructions? Where did you get these?
@skidpancake
@skidpancake 3 жыл бұрын
@@patdriver9747 I've added links to the official instructions in the video description. They don't provide too much information, the main instruction after install being: "After installation, test-drive the vehicle for about 180 miles (300 km) at speeds less than 40 mph (60 kph)." I'd recommend taking lots of slow sharp turns or doing figure 8s in a parking lot to break it in, and overall just go easy for the first 100 or so miles.

So what about checking backlash and setting the preload on the bearings by adjusting the carrier shims? Those are critical steps to setting up a differential. There's practically zero chance the original shims will be correct when you replace the carrier.
@skidpancake
@skidpancake 2 жыл бұрын
Because the differential was developed in house, OEM shims should work on supported applications. However you are correct, the instructions do state you should check backlash. In my case, I didn't have the proper equipment, so I took a chance and skipped those steps. So far, no issues since the install.

How's the drivability? Tight turns in parking lots?
@skidpancake

A little squealing on tight turns but that's about it, great experience otherwise.

Hey, I have a question. It looks like you're pressing the carrier bearings with the cover on? Is this recommended. How do you know that you've pressed it in enough? Thanks
@FrickenHamster
@FrickenHamster 2 жыл бұрын
Also what kind of attachment did you use to press it?
@skidpancake
@skidpancake Жыл бұрын
There's a lip that will stop you from pressing it any further. And I just used a flat metal plate that came with the press.

How do I figure out what shim thickness I would need? Is there a chart or do I need to remove the old one and measure?
@skidpancake
@skidpancake Жыл бұрын
The official instructions are linked in the video description and they contain some sizing charts, but basically you would measure the backlash and then adjust the shims on each side accordingly. In my case, I just re-used the original shims.
