I just binge watched this entire build. And read some comments. There were a LOT of negative comments. ‘That won’t work’, ‘you’ll never get a good cut with that’, ‘a lathe can’t be built’, etc,,,etc.... And to be honest, I cringed more than once watching. However, I would be curious to know how many of your ‘nay-sayers’ have built anything remotely close to the size and complexity of this build. I love it that you proved them all wrong. Good for you. Keep up the awesome work. And I also just subbed.

I am a retired R/D aircraft engineer this lathe you have made is really top class you should do well in the engineering trade. The carriage which is moving along the lathe base plate. Try this obtain some thick white felt (1/2 inch thick) cut 2 strips about 1/8 to 3/16 wide. length of strips being the lathe base plate width secure felt to carriage base plate only (Chuck side and tail stock side) with thin brass strip & screws ,make sure brass strip is just touching lathe slide base surface but felt is firm on said. Oil felt well. AS you move carriage along this will keep out chips from getting between the moving surface, plus will improve the sliding action of slide. You might be able to do the same on compound etc. Remember to oil felt once a week if you use lathe a lot. Clean lathe face reg to prevent crude build up. Keep the improvements going .

Maybe a little too late say but I really like your videos. I’m a mechanical engineer and I always find reason I can’t do something. I really like the way you tackle everything and keep a positive attitude! Keep on building, welding, grinding, and cutting! I’ll keep on watching! BTW, I want to build one just like yours!

I want to say i am very impressed with your work on this lathe and how you have adapted to changes that impacted your design. I have a suggestion about the mounting of the chuck. There is a recessed area on the back of the chuck, you can turn the back plate so that it fits in that recess area with a lip .This will allow you to attach the chuck centered without the run out that you have now. You could use the same method of mounting you used at the first chuck mounting stage. Your ideas have changed my thinking when it comes to ( bed travel and way design). Thank you

The truth is that your lathe is much better than what I have, which is no lathe and the need to do many small projects that your lathe could accomplish. very good build. I will be looking closer at doing the same.

I remember about 25 years ago when I was in the same position you were in with this project and all the mental gymnastics I did trying to figure out how to get the materials and tooling I had on hand to make the lathe I wanted to make. It would have been different than yours, but I am not sure how much if any better it would have been. I ended up buying a Chinesium 13x40 and it has been a pretty good machine, but I still admire the hell out of yours. Keep up the good work! :-)

Good on you. Just "Good on you" for doing it and making it so successful. You have judgement and the right attitude. Love it all. You started with what looks like a pretty reasonable chuck. The de-chucking and re-chucking of the aluminium pulley in the other video worked so well, with such little runout, considering the number of times you had that thing mounted -just indicates it's pretty good. Yep, I appreciate it very much.

So many things you do brings back memories, great job, the thingy with the threads is called a half nut.

Great project. I'm busy building my own lathe at the moment and you are definitely showing me the ropes. Strangely enough , I'm also using an "I" beam similar to yours but it is oriented the other way. Thanks for a great video.

Wow man, I'm beyond impressed. Sorry, late tot he party here... I've been watching your builds for a bit, only subscribed for a short period.. I've seen you use this lathe to make the 2 speed gearbox, but I didn't even notice it wasn't a store bought unit! Holy shit is this impressive!!! For your speed issues... I have an idea, though it's not exactly *cheap* persay. You need to find a 3 phase *AC* motor, and a Variable Frequency Drive. The VFD will allow you to use standard 1 phase AC home current on a 3 phase motor, however you can vary the frequency! Variable frequency on a 3 phase AC motor == Variable speed!!! Don't buy into the bullshit speed converters for 1 phase AC motors. They won't work. You lose torque and will eventually kill the motor. I picked up a pair of 3hp 3 phase AC motors for free, so, just an FYI. They're out there!

Maybe get a variable frequency drive (e.g. from Banggood or ebay). They will however set you back around 100 Bucks, but maybe you can find a used one. -You can vary the speed with a knob -They can be set to a certain power output limit (safer, i case something jams)

I thought you said it would drive the cross feed but that's the longitudinal feed...perhaps I misunderstood...the device for engaging the feed is very like the half nut on an engine lathe which is usually for thread cutting but you have put it to a different use...you have a good mechanical grasp...nice work

This lathe is way better than the lathe I don't have! I've been looking at used lathes on eBay and wishing I had one....

Two more ways to manipulate the speed are: changing the thread pitch on your threaded rod to a courser (larger) thread and/or changing the Drive pully to a larger size and the follower (attached to thread rod) to a small pulley. I know you said you have the biggest but look into evaporative swamp coolers and you'll find more. Just ideas... you did an outstanding job.

Nice video quality. The finish looks good i'm amazed for a home made machine. I seen someone use a mig wire motor and controller for an automatic feed unit on a lathe you can then adjust the feed with a simple twist of a knob.

I have watched you build this lathe from the beginning. It was Just an I beam. I feel I have received a free education on lathes. As far as the quality of your Video it looks great!! I didn't have nerve enough to try what you did. I found a used South Bend lathe. It needs a little TLC, but I have learned so much from watching you, I think I can handle it. You may want to watch Jeremy Fielding and learn what he has to say about DC motors from treadmills. If you find an old treadmill, they have DC motors and speed controllers, I think if you try one of them for the feed it would make a great setup for variable speed. My South Bend Lathe doesn't have power feed. I am going to use a DC motor. I don't know where you learned all that you have. I am a believer in education. However all education does not happen in a classroom. And there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE IN ABILITY AND EDUCATION. You have proven that you have both.

Honestly I like all your steps in building your own lathe amazing giant project thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge etc. We have a proverb back home in Algeria "when the fox cannot reach the grapes in the high vine tree he says the grapes are sour" meaning dont listen to the negative comments and go forward you doing very well. The VFD that someone suggested is a great idea and you won't need a gear change box

You could add a slope to the body of the lathe so that the lever on the carriage hits it and disengages to prevent the tool holder from crashing into the chuck

Video quality is great. One thing u need to figure out is the white balance. My sony does samething. White becomes kindof yellowish on video. Just toy with it a bit more and ull find the perfect settings to lights u have where ever ur filming. Keep up the great work. Always look forward to ur videos because u mix up ur content alot. Never know what videos ull release.

What you need is a "Zero-Max drive". I've ran many machines that had them and they are great for low rpm applications like your lead screw. They have very smooth output and come in reversing models as well so you could power feed at any speed and in both directions. Look them up or build your own. They are basically 4 ratchet mechanisms 90 degrees out of phase with an adjustment arm that limits the stroke.

just an idea but maybe try to stick a clutch on the power feeder than you could start power feeding by squeezing a lever, just thinking that the piece that you designed to engage the threaded rod might strip over time from being pressed into the turning threads the only change you would have to make to your design is to somehow make the engager lock in the engaged position and disengaged position love this project great work!

Add a small dc motor to the tailstock end of the feed screw. Windshield wiper motors work well. Then control the speed with a cheap dc speed controller. I've seen similar setups done for less than $30. I'm getting ready to this to my 9" south bend.

along with the power feed, you can make almost anything now........ e`specially when you add a milling attachement !......... good machine !

not sure if anyone had suggested this as read the comments i surely agree you are very impressive, you mentioned that you wanted to slow it down. try using fine thread on the one you added to ad auto movement. Then to apply reverse just simply flip the rod around then on your switch, just and dual springs with a neutral in the center. If you can gather any of this Im sure you will have both slower speed and reverse. be sure to let me know how it goes.

wow that power feed did the trick, nice job indeed,thats a fine working lathe.I just watched this whole series over again this afternoon and it just reaffirmed what i have been saying all along you got boat loads of talent and I enjoy everyone of your videos.keep up the awesome work.as for your speeds there were a lot of lathes I have seen where guys geared up small standard transmissions on them and that worked very well, some old model A's and model t"s had very small tranny's that you could gear up no problem.
