I host home assistant on one of those. Ran out of the space quickly as 8Gi version gives you around 2Gi. Moved all my home assistant stuff to the USB storage without any performance hit (so far).

I'm planning to use one for home assistant, so I'll probably end up doing the same. I think it helps that the internal storage itself is pretty slow - if you have a decent USB drive, you can probably match it.

Thanks for giving the SD adapter a try. I was curious about it but I think I'll pass now. I have the 16 gig version of the 3040 with Tiny 10 installed. With Chrome installed, I still have about 13.5 gigs free after cleaning. I've even installed a few games like Fallout New Vegas that run at 480p. Chrome runs quite snappy as well. It's impressive to me for being so damn small. 🤠

Hi, thanks for the comment. It's a shame as I really wanted it to work reliably, especially as I have several micro USB cards lying around. I've also got a 16GB (along with a few 8GB versions), I use it as a development server. Always been curious about how it would handle games, might have to give it a try :) I agree, performance is great for the size, and I especially love that they're fanless.

If there’s an m.2 slot why don’t you put an SSD in it?
@qubitstech
@qubitstech 7 ай бұрын
Sadly it's not possible. The M.2 is only configured for SDIO, neither SATA nor NVMe are present.

also may i recommend using Debian 12 instead of Bionic Beaver? 18.04 is dead by now

@riffdex Yeah it does, but compatibility is hit and miss. I have one running with a 16GB microSD as we speak, The OS is on the internal storage and the SD is used for everything else. It has the occasional drop out though, so it's hard for me to recommend it. A USB drive would be the best option, and a decent USB 3 drive will definitely be faster.

Just ordered one of these off eBay, which linux distro do you recommend for the Dell Wyse 3040? I'm assuming my go to of Pop!_OS is too large for the 8GB, although I will probably have a Samsung t7 connected at all times.

Sorry for the late reply, only just say your comment. I use Gentoo with a USB drive for extra storage (with /usr and /var/tmp moved to the USB) and it works well. If you want something lightweight, antiX seems to do the job, but really anything should be fine if you're willing to use the USB drive for the OS. The internal storage is slow anyway, so you won't really be losing anything.

Has anyone tried to use external USB drive with 3040 5V version? Will 5V 2A power supply be enough to power it? Or powering from full (19V powered) terminal?
@qubitstech
@qubitstech 2 ай бұрын
Hi, I've just tested with a 4TB seagate barracuda. The system drew 8W max during boot, so you might get away with a 2A power supply though it could struggle under load.

Sorry, I've only just seen your comments but I you got an answer anyway. USB is your best bet to add extra storage. It's a shame there aren't better storage options, but as a thin client I guess it was never designed to have additional storage. I don't use home assistant, but that seems like a good use for them :)
