In this short tutorial I teach you how to achieve my interpretation of a loose winter watercolor landscape. I demonstrate how I achieve two different styles of trees, from loose distance trees to textured detailed trees for contrast. We'll finish the painting with a touch of Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White for some snowy details.

Love your tutorials ! I moved to the PNW 50 yrs ago....still in love with fir trees in all seasons. In winter they're green, if it snows they're magical ( we don't get alot in W Wa), in the fall they provide a background for autumn colors.

This is wonderful! I love paint trees but sometimes what I see in my head doesn’t translate thru to my brush. I love your trees!! I have a tendency to make them too full. I keep telling myself less is more but we all have a tendency to think it needs a little more…and then there is too much!! I just found you and will be following you, looking forward to your tutorials. BTW I live on the east coast of the USA… But we have pine trees that look like that…and several that don’t, but you type is my favorite! Thank you so much!! You really did a great job of teaching this tree and I thank you for letting us know what type of brushes you were using. It really makes a difference! ❤

Thank you so much! Will be attending more of your sessions! I learned a lot!

Lately, I haven’t had much time to paint, but I have a little time this weekend. So, I’m going to give this a try. I love it! Thank you for the detailed instructions, it’s much appreciated. I’m a PNW girl, born and raised. 🌲🌲🌲🥰 Side note… When I watch one of your videos it says I’m not subscribed but if I go to your channel page it says I am. So weird.

Encore merci 🙏😍

Beautiful painting and technique. Thanks for sharing. One question, are you letting your painting dry naturally before proceeding, such as the mountains and then the trees? I love your opinion on the brushes, I am new to watercolor only about 3 years and I am just now getting familiar with the types of brushes that work for me, but it is very helpful to hear about the types of brushes that work best for background or more misty, etc. And I am born and raised in the PNW and love to paint trees and love your technique!

Thank you and you are so welcome! It's been a while since I filmed this painting, but I do not believe I let it dry before moving on to the next step. Since this was the etchr lab sketchbook, the paper doesn't stay wet for very long, so I think it dried enough. But when I use Arches, it stays wet for much longer, so if I painted this scene on that paper, I may need to have let it dry a little.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and I started watching your channel because your trees looked like the ones out my window. I love the look of your landscapes and have tried to do similar ones, but mine just don't look the same. I think it's cause I'm an old lady and my hands aren't as steady as they used to be, lol. I guess I'll have to continue looking at yours, right?

There are so many of you wonderful viewers from the PNW. I love it. It means you must love moody forests, too?! Haha Thank you for watching and loving my landscapes. I appreciate that. With my trees, I use a light hand and a gentle sweeping motion, but it also helps having toothy paper. I think, however, that I'll do a landscape with easier trees. Really think about how I painted them as a beginner.
