Hey! In this video, I'm showing you how to add shade to your DIY Pergola. Please watch part #1 if you want to see how I built my pergola for under $240.
• UNDER $240 DIY PERGOLA...
What I'm adding is called a sun shade sail canopy. It's by the brand Ankuka and perfect for yards and patio's. I bought mine from Amazon & it looks like they're sold out of my exact one but I'll link some other brands that have good reviews. I paid $62 for mine.
Ankuka Waterproof Sun Shade Sail Canopy Rectangle UV Block for Outdoor Patio and Garden, Yard Activities(13'X16.5', Black) a.co/d/10LBzgo
👌Similar Shades on Amazon with great reviews.

amzn.to/3btSbRu
amzn.to/3buefM0
1st Step....Measure the perimeter of your pergola & when buying your shade, buy it slightly larger so that you have a little wiggle room so that it's enough fabric to clip on to the post.
❤️ What you'll need to add shade.
✅ A sunshade canopy (Amazon)
✅ The brand "Husky" anchor points..One pack has 4 (Home Depot)
✅ 4 packs of double bolt snaps A.K.A. double clips (Home Depot)
✅ 8 wood screws (Home Depot)
✅ Hammer (Home Depot)
✅ Screw Driver (Home Depot)

Cut the top of the 2 post that are furthest away from your house about 1-2 inches. This will give it enuf slope for the rain to run off. Re-attach your cloth. (Keep in mind that your cloth measurements will slightly change.) Also the oversized cover is probably partially contributing to water build up. (Invest in a smaller one). You should be good as long as your cover is at a slight angle. Good luck!😊

Great diy for my apt kiddos.Dirt may make the treated wood post rot faster. Rocks might be a better idea.

Excellent comment! Pea gravel would be a great idea. Also wrapping the bottom of the posts or painting them with a plastic/rubber coating like plasti-dip

Water will get in side each pole sitting for a long time rotting the pole, use a water proof membrane on the poles all the way from top to bottom to prevent the water seeping in the wood.

I'm not sure if it's been said (I haven't read all the comments) but take the same type of wire you hung your curtains on and make a "X" underneath the tarp connecting the wires at the opposite ends. This should keep it from sagging and give some support underneath. I hope this makes sense and helps. I am so doing this 😂

For permanent pole stability, I'd add concrete around post opening instead of dirt; I'd be worried a strong wind causing posts to wiggle about. Otherwise, you did a great job!

Or Home Depot has lava gravel. It keeps it movable yet keeps the posts sturdy even in wind storms. Lava comes in red rust or black.

Hey 👋 I haven’t perfected this shade but I welcome any suggestions! Love you guys! Thanks Edit: Update…A beautiful subscriber Shannel suggested that two of your post should be taller. That way your canopy is on a slight slope! Such a great idea!!! If you guys have more suggestions, please put it in the comments because we’re a family and we help each other!

Hello Cozy Habitat... I've attempted to build the pergola like you've instructed. I'm a little off. I'm trying to find the exact ankuka canopy you have. Can you share the link?

I wish I could upload an image. I am going to attempt is to add 8 bolts instead of 4 so I can slant it before the rain. 🤔I'm near Blue Island, Illinois. 😊

Another great tip is using a waterproof coating like those used for boating. It'll allow the rain to just run off the sun shade material like little pearls of water droplets.

You have to put the front post or the back post owner sent about a foot and a half to 2 foot shorter than one side for the rain to drain off

Even with the rain issue. My mother has a 1000 + metal pergola that she has a replace every year. I am so proud of this project and how much $$ that it will save me.

Hi there! What a great and affordable idea! Your patio looks amazing. I would frame all around the top with 2x6 boards. Then depending on how wide your pergola is, screw in some joists(also 2x6) every two feet or so. Raise the center joists up slightly more than the others and this should help with rain runoff. I know that this will add a substantial cost to the project. Maybe folks can do one phase one season and then the second stage next season. I really think it would help to stabilize the structure. As you saw, the tarp was causing the posts to pull inward. I’d also investigate a shade with a bit more open weaving. That might allow more water to flow through and not puddle on top. Framing the top portion would keep it “square”. The framing would also act as a nice valance to cover your curtain cables 😊. Keep those great ideas coming. You’re very inspirational 😊

Nice! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 The tarp needs to be pulled taunt so that the rain rolls off. It looks like you purchased one of the shade sails, so they should be mounted so that the rail rolls off them. Not sure if you can move your poles out a little further to take out the slack, but this is what you'll need to do. Hope this helps!

An extendable paint pole would work well. You could stand it inside of a n outdoor umbrella base To keep it upright

The way the tarp layers over the curtains is gorgeous, reminds me of luxury Arabian tent! Great job and kudos to your Mom! Those brick planters/post holders are a great idea!

Hi love this look and with the concrete block build it makes it very rental friendly. There are a few ways you can fix your sunshade. You could make the front post slightly lower to create a shade. You could also add wood beams to all four sides then four beams to create a point at the middle (like they have on tents) which will allow the rain to roll off and possibly take up some of the extra material.

Beautiful! I would add/cut down to 6 feet post or add two 10 feet which ever you prefer to make a slope.

Love this diy... I have two large trees in my yard but they dont provide shade where i need it. I think this diy pergola will be simply perfect. i often must work solo & look forward to using your suggestion to use that type of concrete stone/brick as a simple sturdy base and planter; but i think i will partially filled the base with concrete for greater sta bility since i ve already experienced high winds ripping my heavy duty trampoline two blocks away from its placement.. i've since learned to think "better safe than sorry". You might consider to pre-drill a starter hole with a smaller straight nail or bit to help the final securing of the tarp anchors to the post . The screws will likely go in easier and on straighter angle. Thanks for your video.

Yes, that would a good idea but the fire pit it there. Someone else suggested that I made two of the post higher than the other two. That way, it’s on a slant.

I know I’m 2 months behind the other comment, but remove the tarp & turn it into a wooden pergola top. Then you can replace the tarp. The wood will give it move stability with a better shape for the tarp. Or use a strong retractable tarp whether you make it or buy it. That’s my vision.

You will be able to get the screws tighter if u have a power drill strong enough to drill it in. The drill will ensure that the screws are flat against the wood. I also agree with the other comment about getting the poles away from the house shorter in order to have a sloped too to keep the rain from sitting on top.

How about you add 4 wood panels around the Top & run serval thinner wood blankets on Top than weave a roll of bamboo (like you did with your Fence)…I think that would look good with your decor & your backyard Fence ! Just saying…I’m going to try it out with my backyard Idea of a Pergola …🤔! 🤞🏼

Don't know if you have done it. But I would look into some Long thin poles that can bend. (X) them and twist tie them in the center. Think like a Tent.
