The creation of Norman the Dragon, at Lincoln Castle, new to 2023.
Carved from polystyrene / styrofoam, and finished in glass fibre, Norman now accompanies Lucy the Dragon inside the castle grounds.

I was at Lincoln Castle a few weeks ago, probably around the same time as the weather was quite hot then. Sadly I missed Aden and his amazing work. I don't know how you all do it, but it's super to watch you go from polystyrene, to the finished result. I have to say I think red was a better choice. As for the castle, yes you can go in for free (car parks all around for a daily charge of £9.50 - cheaper for 4 hours, but not by much). You only pay for the prison tour, to see the Magna Carta and the medieval walk around the top of the castle walls. When we were there, there were a lot of people sunbathing and having picnics - all just wandered in through the main entrance, no ticket required - you just walk through. At 25:42, you can see the prison (pre-Victorian and post Victorian) where around 38 prisoners were exe.cuted back in the 1700s and 1800s. There is a small area within a sort of turret part of the castle with many very small gravestones, which are those that were exe.cuted. They simply have the condemned persons' initials - that's it. At 25:45, in the distance there is a building that looks like a castle, with turrets and creeping ivy around it - that is actually a fully working county/crown court building, which operates Monday to Friday. What a fantastic place to work! All within the castle walls. Lastly, just a hundred yards from the castle entrance, is Lincoln cathedral, which is incredible. It is also free to go in, but donations are welcome if you so wish. The castle was built by William the Conqueror in the late 11th century (not long after the battle of Hastings in 1066), and the cathedral was built at around the same time. Lincoln is a great place to visit, really fascinating.

Hi, yes I agree about the dirt. I thought they were going to be piling up mud in great big heeps so it looked like the dragon was coming out of the ground. Instead they placed a flat layer of in dust. A real shame.

A beautiful piece of art, you guys are so talented. I never get tired of drawing & painting dragons, any movie or tv show featuring dragons.....I'M THERE!! I've always had this dream that if one day i'f i'm wealthy enough to buy a big enough house with loads of land, i would have a big pond put in, and then i would get some local stone masons to carve me a dragon (based on one of my drawings) with it's mouth open, and out of it's mouth would be where the fountain would spring from.....could even become a tourist attraction!! That would be my tribute to the Masters of modern day fantasy epics.....that's the dream anyway! Anyway back on Earth, you guys did a fantastic job, really enjoyed this commission and i could tell so did you guys, Amazing Work!!

Hey huggy. Thank you very much for the comment. If there ever comes a time where you'd like to look into a dragon sculpture, and stone masonry is simply too expensive, maybe give us a look in, as we may be able to carve and fibreglass a dragon for you, with a stone effect finish. Food for thought! Thanks again.

Do you actually allow people to your work place as there will be a lot of things to discuss, it would be much easier to tell you the details in person and vice versa, whatever you want to ask me, I'd be more than happy to tell you. I'm sure you & your remarkable gang of artisans will do a remarkable job, Thankyou once again, have yourselves a great weekend....DEFINITELY a dragon commission heading your way for sure, speak soon, God Bless .

I've not seen a Dragon's head this large since 1981s DRAGON SLAYER film which was...20ft long inc. the neck. A very different design, perhaps more stereotypical, but very good, meaning of course that the actor was able to literally jump on the Dragon's neck with NO fakery to try to stab it.

Just discovered your channel. Your team does amazing work! ART. I came upon your channel by necessity…. Im diving into my first foam board/ fiberglass project. Difficulty level fairly low. Do you ever have videos that show the step after sculpting, the fiberglass step? I’ve watched videos from many people over the passed weeks… some people put foul over the foam to protect the foam from the resin and fiberglass part, some people don’t…. I want to look to you guys, you seem to be the utmost level of this skill
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios 10 ай бұрын
Hey Ryan, thanks for finding us! So..... We use a sticky backed aluminum foil, burnished over the top of the Styrofoam, and this protects the foam from the polyester resin going on the top with the glass fibre. We used to use a PVA glue in multiple layers before we discovered the foil, but this was very time consuming, as you usually have to go over with numerous layers of glue to fully protect it properly (if you're interested in our secretly sourced sticky back foil by the way, drop us an email via aden.hynes@hotmail.com) We don't tend do actual tutorials. Just project videos of us going through our process generally for each piece we work on. There are no doubt tutorials out there online, but I hope the above is useful anyway

@@AdenHynesSculptureStudios wow!! What a fast response. And so helpful. Thank you!! I will drop you an email, because I scoured Amazon, and a couple other spots to no avail. As I said this is my first go at this. I recently purchased a 6ft plastic casket prop from a big box store, and it’s beautiful, not bad price for what it is, the only thing…. I’m not 100% in love with the top… it’s very flat, so my dad and I came to the idea of fiberglass/ resin over foam. Im going to make the top have a nice dome affect. Again, I can’t express enough how quickly you responded. Thank you!

What a fantastic prop!! The details are sublime!! You seem to do a great job at norman! I love that you managed to recreate the style of the original head, even though you didn't do the original head. Talking about them, what are your thoughts of Chessington removing the dragon head you did for them back then for a cave?
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks Louis. Admittedly, we were heartily disappointed with the Chessington dragon. Not simply because it's not there anymore, but because it could very easily have still been utilised, revamped, repainted, repaired if needed, to fit the new style of the Tiger Rock ride. It simply looks like a big grey concrete blanket has been thrown over it, which is a real shame :/

There seems to be a big trend at the moment in Merlins parks removing a lot of old stuff, even when they're still in good condition, still really impressive, and we're fan favourites. I really appreciate your honesty on this thanks! Hopefully one day they'll notice how big of a mistake it was removing it, and maybe, who knows, you'll get a phone call from them again. You are insanely talented, why wouldn't they call you?

I’ve been ploughing through your content in awe since discovering it little under a week ago….fantastic stuff , the builds and the presenter with all your quirks…. Quick question : I can’t help but notice the Pink Floyd “Division Bell” statue(s) knocking about in the background of many videos , did you do the original ? …if not who commissioned this copy ?
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios Жыл бұрын
Hey David, first of all, thank you very much for finding us, and for the kind words about our work and videos. It's much appreciated! Secondly, Aden created the original Stone heads for the Division Bell Cassette cover for the band. Since then, the metal heads that you see knocking around was purely a passion project, where he wanted to replicate the metal versions. Since then, we've been in touch with Pink Floyd, or rather, the powers that be, but unfortunately, the concept of a limited edition run of these sculptures won't be going ahead, which is a shame. As we can't sell these, a family friend simply has them sitting in their garden 😂

@@AdenHynesSculptureStudios …thanks for the comprehensive reply , to be honest I had never realised the cassette version was different to the LP/ CD version as I was never a cassette buyer but the Wiki for Division Bell gives the details …wow! I live not far from Ely Cathedral which is visible in the mouth of the statues, it’s a very iconic and striking image…. Such a shame that you’ve been refused a licence to reproduce them for (rich) people’s gardens but I guess that’s business for you , they are known as a litigious band ! One last question , did you do a video of the build of them? ….or was that far too early for the start up of you lot filming the commissions to show on KZfaq?

Absolutely fantastic. I wish I'd had a company like yours years ago. I used to produce large-scale events at castles and abbeys around the UK. I once hired a company and paid them around £5000 to sculpt a statue and it was crap. The very first review of the show said how cheap and crappy it looked and that it ruined an otherwise great show. £5000 for a lifesize statue was a lot 20 years ago and I was promised perfection. I could have bought a marble one for that amount. In those days it was so hard o find people and often the big set makers would screw over smaller companies.

Sounds like a nightmare! I'm sure many people have been in similar situations before, whether something creative, or even home or garden construction. Being promised something properly made, and instead, getting a botched job. We'd like to think we may have done a better job for you, all those many years ago!

Just curious as I have never carved polystyrene before. Do you not need any dust masks or is it not fine enough to require one when you heat cut?

I've watched quite a few of these, and it just occurred to me to ask--what do you do with all the polystyrene bits that are rasped off onto the floor? Seems like it would be very hard to collect it all what with it being both light enough to be moved by the slightest breeze, and with a static charge?

Believe it or not, a broom! Not quite as static as one might expect. Not here in the studio anyways, it must be magic!

For larger sculptures, we just use a standard bead (HD bead for smaller detailed work, which we don't use much)

hi, what product do you use for the resin mix top coat and can that be applied over the concrete? im a hobby sculptor that would like to make larger thing for my yard
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios
@AdenHynesSculptureStudios 9 ай бұрын
Hey Aaron, with this project, we were originally going to go over with a water based concrete render. But in the end, we went with a resin mix instead. We used a general purpose polyester resin, with talc to bulk up the material so that it can be painted or spread onto the job. Hardener/catalyst added to the resin of course

@@TheRmoroni thank you very much. Numerous reasons. The eyes being installed from the inside being one of them. Another is because we wanted to install metalwork at the bottom. And also to reduce the overall weight, as we needed to be able to manoeuvre it for tranpostation, and also lift it by hand up the hill on site
