The matt finish really pops the individual facets of the piece. Nice.

Matte should be used not to hide flaws of your work but because it is in fact the best choice. Seeing it installed on site, the clients first choice of a shiny silver would be best IMO

It's more a question of simply how much extra work is required, in order to work the sculpture up to a good enough finish for a shiney end result. Which, inevitably, means more money for the client. The mat option, we thought, was the more visually pleasing to look at, and the more effective for the client, as it required significantly less work.

Generally the enjoyment for me is carving by hand. I see the potential in 3d modelling and 3d printing and cnc cutting, but I still love the carving, feels like Im actually doing it

Hi Aden, superb work. Here's a 'Roman Frieze' project we finished recently. All hand work, no CNC :-)

Gorgeous! Gorilla!! And as entertaining as ever. I'm always impressed with the amount of work and energy you guys our into the videos as well as the art-works. In this case both are superb! How many hours do you spend on such a Gorilla project? As a scenic painter/ sculptor I always find it difficult to calculate these things.

Aden Hynes Sculpture Studios Thanks for your reply. As a scenic painter/ sculptor for theatre we have lost a lot of work to digital printing. 3D CNC routering hasn't raised its head here yet. I suppose cost is an issue. In time it will come. Mind you, the level of accuracy with the facetting might be difficult to accrue with ' pure' sculpture. Is this your first CNC collaboration?

Agreed, in many instances its a lot quicker, more accurate, and sometimes more cost effective. But a lot of the time, for objects that are really simple, it's not worth the cost to go down the whole process of having an object either 3d modelled or an existing model 3d scanned, then rendered, then programmed to be cut, and cut, when it can just be blocked out and carved. For an object like this, it was a no brainer to have it machine cut, as it needed to be so accurate. We've had other pieces 3d cut before (one of which is a giant piece that will be our next video coming out so stay tuned!). Sometimes it makes sense to have objects 3d cnc cut, but we only do that when it's crucial, otherwise we're simply designating cost to another company, when we could both be paid, and enjoy do the carving ourselves.
