great video... i recently purchased an adenium and I have a question, when do you know your adenium plant is ready to transpose or repot for the bonsai look?
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Kelvin Guzman, I'm glad you liked the video. Most of Adeniums get sooner or later swollen base - some wholly or partially under surface, especially if they're little bit root bound and grown in full sun. So if you choose (non-bonsai) pot the size similar like the bonsai pot you would like the plant to be later in, and grow your plant in this (non bonsai) pot in well lit area till it's little root bound and then expose / raise the bottom - you'll get the nature made trunk of the ancient tree look needed for bonsai, called in Japanese bonsai lingo "nebare". But maybe your plant already has it - uncover some of the growing medium close to the trunk and have a look.

Thank you for posting such helpful videos! I love all of your Adeniums. =) What are some tips to encourage frequent blooming? I live in South Texas - weather right now is between 80-90 degrees F - my adeniums have lots of foliage but only flower about once a year. No signs of pests or rot. Should I be removing leaves to encourage flowering? I fear they are getting too "top heavy"; would transplanting help? Thanks in advance for any advice!
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Nikki R, I'm glad You like my videos and plats :-) As for encouraging Adeniums to bloom - well I don't know which advise would be best for your plants, but here are few thinks to consider: fertilizer - You might try low nitrogen fertilizer to discourage excessive leaf growth. Age: if your plants are young and/or small - than that might be the cause of low and infrequent blooming - so yes - transplanting into bigger pots might help. Specie: If your Adeniums are Adenium Bohemianum or (true) Adenium Socotranum -then those are the specie that bloom less often then other no mater what - it's in their genes As for defoliation - well - I have a moth here name Oleander Hawk Moth (Latin name Daphnis nerii) that lay eggs on Adenium leaves and caterpillars that hatch from those eggs sometimes strip all leaves from infested plants and new leaves grow and the plants this affected don't bloom more then the once right next to them - so for me this does not work, but its not much of a hindrance either - just slight delay. As for temperature - I assume they love it - since Adenium is African plant. I have smallest blooming in winter with temperature 60 to 70 F. and highest in late spring - early summer. One more thing about temperature - because it is so high where you live - aren't the roots 'baking'? If so - you might want to put the pot/s in Styrofoam containers and if that helps then next time you're transplanting purchase pots made of Styrofoam. The commercial gardening pots don't look like they're from this material, because (at least in stores here) are sold painted. They're often sold without drainage holes so you have to just punch those. Nikki R I hope something from these would work for your plants. Happy gardening!

@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 6 жыл бұрын
Hello denho45 as for the feeding - in theory fertilizer rich on potassium and low on nitrogen suppose to encourage bloom. But in my experience more importantly for Adenium is age and size and plenty of sun. I'm in tropics and here Adeniums bloom most heavily in middle to end of spring and least in winter when we have rainy season, but larger plants in larger pots bloom on and off throughout the year.

What type of adenium is the one with the round cordex shown .20 seconds in light whitish pot? . How often do you water & how much water do you give it? till t starts draining from bottom?
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Kalinna Aub, That cultivar is called Spindrift. I purchased it’s seeds from Mr. Ko ‘skilful hands’. His website is: www.adenium.com.tw/desert1.htm With pricelist on: www.adenium.com.tw/2017price%20list.htm As for watering - when it’s warm and plants are growing actively, Adenium likes to be well watered, provided that the growing medium is draining very well. When is cold I water less to avoid root-rot. As for watering till water drains from the bottom - well yes and they don’t like to have plate under to catch the water because in staying water they can get root rot, but if the plant wasn’t transplanted for some years, the water can create a pathway from top to the drainage hole and so parts of the medium in the pot can be totally dry even after the water is coming from drainage hole. That’s one of the reasons why it’s important to repot once in a while. Best of growing Kalinna!
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 7 жыл бұрын
Hello again - I would just like to add that each of my 'Spindrift' Adenium grew very pronounced codex, but each very different shape. And they grew slower and shorter than other single petal white flower cultivars I tried to grow and they all bloomed profusely, but pollinated with each other very reluctantly. They crossed with non-white cultivars/hybrids readily but lost the white color of petals.

Hello Syed Al Farhad. I don't know but it could be spider mites. Take a look with strong magnifier on the under-side of leaves. There is a type call: Red spider mite. It likes to infect Adenium and then all the leaves might gradually get yellow and fall off.

Hello! You and your videos are truly very inspiring. So inspired that i want to take on as my hobby. I live in Malaysia (south of Thailand) where the weather conditions are very similar to of Thailand. Since the weather is always hot and sunny, I reckon the best location to place the adenium plants are straight under the sun. My concern is what happens when it starts to rain? Especially if I am not around? Cheers!
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Harry Fong.If it's hot, the mature Adenium plants that are not just after transplanting like the rain - even heavy rain - provided that the container has adequate drainage holes and the growing medium has good drainage ability. In other words - provided that the roots are not staying in water but are staying in wet growing medium. In the deserts and rocky slopes of Africa - where they originate - there are rainy seasons, but in the sand or on rocky slope water does not stay.

Hi. I have a question: for the bonsai plant, is or are there any drain hole/holes? And if not how often do you water them?
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 4 жыл бұрын
Yes Marybell Tamayo, all those pots have drainage holes - otherwise the'll be great danger of root-root and whole plant dying afterwards. As a matter of fact - if the hole is on the side (not bottom) of the pot and it is few millimeters higher than bottom of the pot then i will re'cut it so the bottom of the pot would not have a puddle. Also - if the drainage holes are on the bottom, then I make sure that the pot is not sitting on very flat surface (for same reason. Cheers and lets be careful please on that terrible virus that's going around.

@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 6 жыл бұрын
Hello DG Yes I do fertilize them. The label says so much every 3 month so I do 1/3 once a month (because my medium is so fast draining. As for type of fertilize - in theory low nitrogen high phosphorus and high potassium should be best for heavy bloom and healthy roots and seeds but I am not observing much difference so sometimes I use triple 16. In winter I fertilize way less because even thou i'm in tropics the plants are sleepy - it gets colder that time.

what kind of mix you useing
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Brandon, Good question. In my experience Adenium plants grown in containers like mix with very good drainage. Mixture of what depends on what’s available in your area and also how often you like to water. For me - I plant seedlings in perlite (because it’s sterile) from which I sift off the dust. Once they grew up to transplanting size I use the I mix about 50 percent lava cinder (after sifting off dust and large pieces) with about 25 percent soil-less compost and about 25 percent red wood chips (because they decompose slower then other chips and also because the ground termites don’t like them). But sometimes I use just would chips. Some people use shredded coconut husk, but again - it’s good to sift the dust away first. The used perlite from growing sprouts I incorporate to the mix also. If the container has large drainage holes, I position larger pieces of lava cinder on front of them. I read in some bonsai books that in Japan they use river sand as an ingredient, but wherever I lived around the world the river sand was quite non porous, so I think the crushed lava (releasing minerals more readily and holding moisture more and allowing roots to hold on its shapes is better than ‘glass pebbles’ like river sand.

Such beautiful plants. I was wondering many of the plants I see have just a few long scragly branches, how do you get them full and bushy with lots of short flowering branches? Also for a fuller plant is it better to start with a plant that isn't grafted? Because the pictures I see the grafted ones look very out of place with their fat trunk and then a small top. I assume it takes years and years for the grafted ones to fill out and look normal?
@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 7 жыл бұрын
Hello WatersproutOfTheDeep, to your 1st question - about my bushy plants: The cultivar Broccoli and cultivar Mini are naturally bushy. Each in the different way: Broccoli by having active branch-bud on each inter-node and Mini by growing more and more twigs from its base. Each of these cultivars tend to transfer some of these characteristics to their offspring when hand cross pollinated with other Adeniums with other desirable characteristics. Also these cultivars and the crosses where they're one of the parents can be often made bushier to some degree with periodic proper pruning. As for your other characteristics - well - yes the crown will get bigger each year, but from beginning it has a charm to some who - for example - admire beauty of small crown on a tall trunk - of a coconut palm, or Lauhala tree (scientific name: Pandanus tectorius. For those who don't have such types of growth in their environment it's going to be either appreciation by way of acquired taste, or it'll appear plain ugly. As for spreading crown without of number of years of growth - that I'm accomplishing by grafting on each branch of root-stock.

@GardenSvideos
@GardenSvideos 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Roy Philip,The benefits are several:if the soil is 'caked' - stopping water from penetratingif the plant is too big for the potif the roots are tangled and strangling each other (root-ball)If the growing medium is depleted of nutrientsIf the watering drilled a crack/pipe to drainage hole and leaving that way fast is failing to water rest of the pot so some of the roots are dryingif You want to restyle the tree - specifically in case of Adenium the plant has often continuation of swollen trunk under the surface of soilif You want to prune roots to help miniaturize the plant and on and on :-)

Hello TechT!Love videos on Your channel!. TechT in this particular video I was showing how some aspects of bonsai can be depicted by Adenium. Namely shallow roots with swollen trunk which in more traditional bonsai specie would take way more years ... . I made other videos showing other typical aspects of bonsai reenacted with Adenium: micro-leaves, raised roots, cut roots, topiary like crown by pruning etc.Cheers!

Hello Shabham Blswas,We have so many wild roosters and chickens here, because one young man in the neighborhood is a cook in the restaurant and when he comes from works he brings them rice so they come from far and wide to live here. :-) :-( As for eating the wild roosters here - I am told that they have parasites, so people who want to eat them first catch them and give grow them in the cage for a while while giving them medicine against worms. As for me - well I'm last half a century vegetarian. : -)
