Easier to do inventory if parts and gaskets are separate. It isn’t hard to click the parts on the computer to add. If it was really about money they would make you buy a kit with parts and all the gaskets just for the one gasket you need.

In troubleshooting, always fix active faults first. Do the opposite of the active fault. So if the fault is shorted make it an open. If it is open make it a short. Watch your status screen and see how it response to what you do. Start in the middle if you can. Now you know if you go left or right. Hook it back up and see if fault returns. As if it was a loose connection, or a rubbed wire. You have disturbed the problem.

My 89’ Paystar 5000 with the butterfly hood has a Big Cam Cummins it’s mounted straight up in that truck, guess the CAT’s were just a little too tall (or maybe the tilt hood models were different?) in any case I know for sure Brockways and Ford N series and Louisville’s with Cummins or CAT engines also mounted them at a slight angle. The Detroit’s always seem to be mounted level though, I guess the 6-71 inline engines aren’t very tall and the rest are V engines so it makes sense but you’d think they’d just standardize it across the board.

I'll give you a like secret that I've found for removing pipe plug. Get yourself a MAP gas propane torch. Use it to heat the area around the plug, not the plug itself. Then take your breaker bar and proper socket or adapter and try to tighten the plug, if it doesn't move apply more heat to the area around the plug. Once it move by tightening it it can be removed. I've been a diesel mechanic for 42 years and this has always worked for me. When I first started I was told to heat the plug, but after doing it that way for years and having mixed results I started doing the process I just mentioned and it always works. When you go to tighten the plug you don't need a lot of force, you don't want to strip or damage the plug. Give it a try and I think you will notice that plugs come out with almost no effort.

As soon as you start wiggling (per Eric O) you just might fix the problem... move the worn spot away from the ground and never see the problem again. You did your due diligence before the wiggle, which is all you can do. One thing I'd try... key up that CB radio and see if the problem is related!

When I use to work on trucks back in late 80's. We had a heavy haul Ford truck come in. Pulled the hood and stepped around and was looking at a huge 3408 cat. It was tipped to the right like your 3406E. And looked like it was jam under the cab. Idk if someone did this or it came from Ford like that. Only engine I ever seen in a truck, tip to the side to fit under the hood and cab.

Hello Love the Videos been learning from you along time. Thanks for what you do. I get to where I only like your videos lol. We are rebuilding our baby she's a cat3406e. Last year we spent 21,000 on the motor just to be let down again. We have started to learn how to check over head and many other things from you. Seems the number 6 was problamtic area. Started to smoke very little at first start then cleared up. Soon after head gasket area started to leak coolant out of back of motor and manifolds. The coolant didnt mix somehow but dropped pan an found number six had very small amount of drops of coolant. We found that only number 6 intake was out by .010. only other thing was 1 bridge was backwards. I have not seen many videos on how or if the leftover springs aroung the injector can or need to be pulled to lift head out or if i need to mark cam, trying to leave cam in an pull it do we need to mark it? if so how? She's had high blowby since it came out of shop they said they did rings but something wasnt right. New air pump head etc. Could use some help thanks.

a trick i have used to get drain plugs out the are over tight or just rusted in. grab a big sized short bolt. grind it so it just fight the plug or you have to tape it in to the plug and weld it in. just as soon as it cools a bit but is still smoking hot it will bring the plug lose. i have never had that one fail to get a plug out. now it is obvious to not weld the plug in.

I used to have a ford 9000 and it had a 855 cu/inch 270 Cummins in it and it was on the same slant. Ford made a good truck and they are tough. I retired it because the cab was so full of holes that you had to wear a rain coat if it was raining. It had 2.45 million kilometres on it and it was never rebuilt. It dropped a valve in the front head and it took out the turbo and the valve went right through the piston. I found a used head and replaced the piston and the turbo and had it back on the road in 3 days for less than $4500. I ran it for 2 years after that. The valve was warn so bad that it fit inside the seat completely. Now I have a Cat with a CT13 that needs an $11000 fuel pump.

I like to replace all the valve cover base bolts. They are cheap, seen many broken. The internal harness, I use silicone on the section between the connector and covered area. Put it between the wires especially at the connector. Trying to repel as much oil as I can. Have seen a ECM fail from the oil running down the harness. When I first tried this, I put the harness in and filled the cavity in the base. Had to replace the harness later and it was a chore getting it back out. Another option that I have not tried yet, is to disassemble the connector and put heat shrink over the bare section and the connector. Exhaust studs, if the nut comes off, I put it back on and take a air hammer and mushroom the stud. Then try again and see if the stud will pull out. And of course MBN, More Bad News. Smart wastegate is the killer. Merry Christmas Josh and family.

This may be a stupid question but besides the obvious mess, what is the issue with oil in the harness? Will it degrade the insulation or…cause a short? Great video Josh. Very interesting. 😊

I have seen the oil drain down the harness and short out the ECM.

Being that BOTH engine oil and wire insulation are Petroleum derived products: The insulation will start to "dissolve" itself and the electrical shorts coming right after. So yeah, it exactly what you thought.👌

Some types of rubber will dissolve in oil, others won't care, and others still will become brittle. Mainly oil will travel all the way down to the ECM and will start messing that up.
