The barely restrained fury with which Bruce attacks his guitar and his vocal. Tom too. Straight fire.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck was one of the greatest American novels, made into one of the greatest American movies, starring Henry Fonda.

Bruce Springsteen was most heavily influenced by Bob Dylan as a young man. His first album Greetings from Asbury Park (1973) had Dylan inspiration all over it. There is a great live version of It’s hard to be a Saint in the City out there, Bruce still plays it regularly.

Bruce actually put out another studio version of this with Tom Morello on his 'High Hopes' album. Both versions are powerful in their own ways.

Just heard this last week, by chance. It gave me goosebumps when the guitar solos were on. Both guys were great. I especially loved the genius of Tom Morello. Stunning!

To get a better idea of what the character of Tom Joad is all about, one needs to check a clip of Henry Fonda playing him in the movie The Grapes of Wrath (1940). It’s titled the “I’ll Be There” speech. His character was being pursued by the goon squad after he inadvertently killed one of them in self defense while protesting against bad wages and working conditions on the large farm. With his death seeming imminent he gave that great speech as his last words to his mother.

I was privileged to see Springsteen and Morello play this at Hanging Rock on the tour where Tom filled in for Steve van Zandt while he was busy filming. Great tour but even better the next year when they came out again and we got both Tom and Steve!

Tom Morello’s solo was weird but amazing! I’ve never heard sounds like that come out of a guitar. I’m not a huge rockhead, my dad loves Bruce, grew up with his music and in turn i love his music, but this song holds a special moment in my heart. High Hopes was the first studio album of Bruce’s that I found by myself, and I loved it, and found the version of this song on there first. The acoustic is beautiful as well!

I was able to see this performance years ago featuring Tom Morello and I had my grandson with me (his first time seeing Bruce) and he still remembers it and being in awe! It was magical ! …of course at time I did not know who he or Rage Against the Machine was but my grandson new immediately and I definitely like this version better than the original. FYI I have been a lifelong fan of Bruce having seen him for the first time in 1978 (he played almost 4 hours). I have seen him many times since and still love him today. Love his new cover album Only the string survive ❤

Harri, your appreciation of both Tom Joad versions is absolutely spot on. I would humbly suggest that, as a counterpoint to the dark and serious themes of Joad, Racing in the Street, Darkness on the Edge of Town, etc., you might enjoy the exuberance of Land of Hope and Dreams (live version) and American Land. You will likely be amazed.

Thanks Harri for another joyful reaction. The enthusiasm and sheer joy you put into them is palpable. You’ve talked before about going to a rock concert for the first time. I highly recommend that first time to be Bruce. He still puts on amazing shows. I’ve seen him around 20 times but I’ve talked to people that have seen him dozens more and have never had anything to say about it except that it was a fantastic show. He will be touring soon from what I understand.

As far as I'm concerned this is the definitive performance of the song. There is a second studio version a few years later done in this style, but a wee bit toned down. It's from the High Hopes album, during the period Tom was touring and recording with the E Street Band as a member.

Great reaction I think you should react to more studio then live versions to see the comparisons and changes he added as he aged. My pick is atlantic city with the live in new york performance. It has an amazing harmonica intro and outro.

Bruce wrote this song but man it could have been Woody Guthrie. I think Bruce channels Guthrie when he his at his best. Only Bruce could take something from an iconic novel The Grapes Of Wrath and add to its legacy.

It's a great video which highlights the song writing genius of Bruce Springsteen, but personally (and I know this is not a widely held opinion) I could have done without the eccentricities of Tom Morrello showing off. The song wasn't written with Morrello in mind and I don't think he can sing either, but that's just my opinion and I know I'm in a small minority who thinks that. Brilliant video despite Morrello's contributions.

Some of Bruce's songs are great live and revised (Kitty's Back!), others are best in their original album versions (Jungleland) and some never should have been recorded in their original form at all (BitUSA). That acoustic version is miles better than the misunderstood anthem version.

I'm likely repeating others, for the most part. The original writer, Woody Guthrie, was a huge influence on Bob Dylan. Springsteen went a little harder but was likewise influenced by Dylan's protest songs. Morello is carrying the torch, just with a far less folk vibe and far more undefinable rock.

Tom Morello annoys me, but I have grown to be a big Springsteen fan. In the 80s and me as a tiny teen at 13 when he took over the world with born in the USA it was too much and not for hard rockin’ def leppard, Metallica, slayer, wasp, iron maiden, kiss, rush, black sabbath me. 15 years later Springsteen hit me. His tunnel of love album is perhaps my favourite. Nebraska and the river great as well. This is a great version, not because of Morello. I like that this version rocks.
